Chapter 217 Applying Medicine
Maybe Gregory's vibe was just too intense. The doctor, feeling those icy, piercing eyes on him, was totally uncomfortable.
He got distracted, and his hand started shaking.
Abigail felt a sharp pain on her forehead and couldn't help but gasp.
Gregory's face got even darker, his voice dripping with menace. "If you can't do this right, get another doctor."
The doctor forced a smile. He wanted to do a good job, but who wouldn't be freaked out with Gregory glaring at them??
Abigail gently tugged on Gregory's sleeve and softly said, "Mr. White, you're scaring the doctor."
Hearing this, Gregory's tense expression relaxed a bit, and the murderous look in his eyes started to fade.
His face was still stern, but the pressure in the room eased up.
The doctor secretly sighed in relief, gave Abigail a grateful look, and went back to applying the medicine.
With that earlier scare, the doctor was way more careful now.
Ten minutes later, he was done. The doctor wiped his forehead and realized he was drenched in sweat. In over ten years of practice, he'd never felt this exhausted. His heart felt like it had been on a roller coaster, up and down, with no place to land.
The doctor thought inward, 'Thank goodness it's over!'
Abigail quickly thanked the doctor. He waved it off, gave a few instructions, and hurried out of there. He didn't want to stay a second longer.
Watching the doctor practically run away, Abigail couldn't help but chuckle.
Gregory turned to her, looking confused. "What's so funny?"
Abigail said, "Mr. White, you scared the doctor away. I heard doctors have strong nerves and steady hands. You really freaked him out!"
Gregory scoffed lightly. When it came to mental toughness, who could compare to Abigail? She looked delicate and soft, but her inner strength was unmatched. She'd just survived a car accident and could still laugh. While others were terrified of him, she dared to joke with him.
Thinking of something, Gregory's lips barely curved into a smile, and he gently tightened his grip on Abigail's hand.
"By the way, Mr. White," Abigail suddenly said, "The driver, Eldric, is seriously injured and hasn't woken up yet. We should go check on him."
That car accident probably wasn't just an accident. Even though she hadn't seen what happened outside the window, Eldric had been with her for a long time and wasn't reckless. So something fishy must've been going on.
Gregory nodded and followed Abigail to the hospital room.
The doctor had just finished examining the driver and said, "The head injury is pretty bad, a moderate concussion. Other injuries are minor, but he needs good rest."
Gregory thanked the doctor and called Leo to contact Eldric's family.
Looking at the unconscious driver lying on the bed, Abigail felt a wave of guilt.
"What's wrong? Feeling down?" Gregory noticed Abigail's low spirits and asked gently.
Abigail looked up at Gregory, feeling a bit down. "I was just thinking, if I hadn't closed my eyes to rest and had paid attention to the outside, maybe I could have warned Eldric in time, and he wouldn't be lying here."
Gregory pulled Abigail into his arms, his fingers gently stroking her back. "Don't beat yourself up. This isn't something you could have predicted."
Abigail bit her lip and stayed quiet. Gregory sighed, holding her tighter, silently comforting her.
About an hour later, the driver's wife, Kalina, rushed in. Seeing her husband on the bed, she burst into tears, leaning over and sobbing. "Eldric, how did you get so badly hurt? You were fine when you left. Who did this to you? This is so awful."
Gregory frowned and instinctively covered Abigail's ears to keep her from overthinking.
Watching Kalina cry like that, Abigail felt really uncomfortable. She stepped forward and said, "Kalina, I'm sorry. Eldric got into an accident while driving me home. We will definitely give you an explanation."
Kalina turned her head sharply, her eyes filled with anger and hatred, staring at Abigail.
Her face was already thin, and now it looked even more sinister and harsh. "An explanation? That's easy for you to say. You're not the one lying here! Eldric is the only one bringing in money for our family. If he gets sick, what are we going to do?"
Abigail opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but Gregory gripped her hand tightly.
He said coldly, "If you care so much about Eldric, why haven't you asked about his condition since you came in?"
Kalina's face stiffened, but she quickly replied, "I was just too shocked to ask. Besides, he's already lying here unconscious. What's there to ask?"
Gregory sneered, pulling out a check from his suit pocket. "Alright, just name your price."
Kalina's eyes lit up at the sight of the check. But she didn't dare show it too obviously, her shrewd eyes darting around before she pretended to be embarrassed and smiled, "Mr. White, Eldric was just doing his job. You're being too kind."
Gregory interrupted her, "If that's the case, then forget it. When the hospital bill comes, just give it to my assistant for reimbursement."
"That won't do!" Kalina panicked, regretting her earlier pretense.
This was Gregory! The president of the White Group, arguably the richest man in Aramore.
Although Eldric made a decent amount as a driver, who would refuse more money?
Gregory noticed her expression, a faint mocking smile on his lips, and put the check away, saying, "It's settled then. The White Group will compensate you for emotional distress and medical expenses. We'll discuss the rest when Eldric wakes up."
It wasn't that he didn't want to give money; Kalina looked very money-hungry.
According to the information Leo had just sent, Kalina liked to gamble and often lost all her money. Eldric handed over most of his salary every month, but it was never enough for Kalina. If Gregory gave the money now, it probably wouldn't be used on Eldric's treatment.
Kalina wanted to say more, but Gregory had no intention of listening. He took Abigail's hand and left the room.
She stomped her foot in frustration and thought, 'I shouldn't have said so much. Now, I have to watch the money slip away!'
