Chapter 63 The Awareness of a Married Man

The phone rang, cutting through the tension between them.

He frowned, wondering who'd call this late.

Seeing the caller ID, his face darkened.

Abigail noticed and asked, "Mr. White, who's calling? Aren't you going to answer?"

Gregory hesitated but then picked up. "What is it?"

His voice was cold, now even icier. Anyone could tell he was mad.

But Elaine didn't notice. Panicked, she cried, "Gregory, Olivia tried to kill herself!"

"So?" Gregory's tone was indifferent.

Elaine, desperate, repeated, "Olivia! She couldn't stand you being with another woman and slit her wrists. If the maid hadn't found her in time..."

She sobbed, clearly heartbroken.

"What does that have to do with me? We're not close." Gregory was puzzled. 'Shouldn't they call 911? Why call me? And what did she mean by Olivia not standing me being with another woman?'

He had told Olivia he didn't like her. They had no reason to blame him for her actions.

"Olivia's life or death has nothing to do with me." His voice was icy cold.

Elaine was stunned, unable to believe his words. "Gregory, Olivia tried to kill herself because of you. You have to take responsibility!"

Gregory laughed, but it wasn't warm. "Who is she to me? Why should I be responsible?"

Elaine never expected him to be this cold. "Even if you're not together, Olivia has waited for you for years. Can't you just see her and comfort her?"

In her mind, Olivia loved Gregory deeply. If he had any conscience, he wouldn't be this indifferent.

Abigail, close to Gregory, overheard Elaine's words.

At first, she was shocked Olivia would attempt suicide.

But now, she found it ridiculous.

Olivia liked Gregory, but he had no obligation to see her.

Elaine's words were clearly a threat.

She looked at Gregory, wondering if he'd agree.

Gregory seemed to understand and held her hand, gently squeezing it, silently comforting her.

Abigail felt a bit ticklish and wanted to pull away, but Gregory held on tighter.

Then she heard him say, "I'm a married man. Why should I see another woman? Find someone else. My wife might misunderstand."

Elaine angrily said, "Gregory, how can you be so heartless? It's just a visit, not like we're asking you to marry her!"

Gregory sneered, "Are you sure you never had that intention?"

"I..." Elaine fell silent, feeling guilty.

She had thought about it.

Though she married into the White family, she came from a humble background.

Her family's poverty had always been her greatest pain.

Elaine had been taught to help, care for, and protect her brother since she was young.

When her brother and sister-in-law had an accident, she quickly brought Olivia into the White family despite objections.

But staying there forever wasn't a solution.

So, Elaine started scheming.

Olivia was good-looking and likable.

If Elaine could marry into the White family, why couldn't Olivia?

She shared her thoughts with Olivia, and Olivia agreed immediately, saying she had fallen for Gregory at first sight.

This was a pleasant surprise.

So, over the years, Elaine had been secretly creating opportunities for Olivia.

Whenever Gregory visited, she would contact Olivia.

Olivia would then use the excuse of visiting her to get close to Gregory.

But despite all these years, Gregory remained indifferent.

All her schemes had failed.

Elaine thought she was discreet, but Gregory exposed her on the spot.

Elaine felt extremely embarrassed.

She nervously swallowed and stammered, "Gregory, I don't know what you're talking about. We're discussing Olivia's suicide attempt. Can you just come and take a look? Just one look, okay? Otherwise, I'm afraid Olivia might try to kill herself again."

Elaine wasn't very smart, but she knew when to show weakness.

She hoped Gregory would consider her position and come to see Olivia.

This way, Olivia's emotions could be stabilized, and it would also upset Abigail.

It was a win-win.

Unfortunately, Gregory had no intention of falling into her trap.

He said coldly, "If it happens once, it will happen again. Today, she uses suicide to force me to visit her in the hospital. Tomorrow, will she use it to force me to divorce Abigail and marry her? Going there would give her hope. It's better to let her give up completely."

Elaine hurriedly argued, "She wouldn't do that. Olivia isn't that kind of person."

"Whether she is or not, I have my own judgment. Is there anything else? If not, I'm hanging up." Gregory was already impatient and wanted to end the call.

Elaine tried to stop him, "Gregory, I rarely ask you for anything. Can you just go see her, please?"

Gregory bluntly refused, "Elaine, I thought I made myself clear."

He wasn't a doctor. Even if he went, Olivia wouldn't get better.

Besides, another woman's life or death had nothing to do with him.

A married man should be conscious of his status and keep a distance from other women.

Abigail already suspected that he and Olivia were once a couple. If he really went, Abigail might divorce him.

He wasn't that foolish.

Moreover, Olivia wasn't that important.

Elaine bit her lip, still unwilling to give up. "Abigail, you're listening, right? Can you not be so selfish and help me persuade Gregory?"

Abigail didn't expect Elaine to call her name.

She was stunned for a moment and found it absurd. "Elaine, I don't think any woman would want her husband to stay by another woman's bedside, and I'm no exception. Besides, I have no obligation to help a woman who covets my husband. I'm very petty."

Gregory's lips curved slightly when he heard her earnestly say she didn't want him to accompany another woman.

His mood, which had been ruined by Elaine, lifted again.

It seemed Abigail still cared about him. Otherwise, how could she say such things?

Elaine was furious, gritting her teeth, wanting to accuse Abigail of being jealous and petty.

But before she could speak, she heard Gregory say, "Elaine, is there anything else? If not, Abigail and I need to rest."

Elaine opened her mouth, about to say something, but then she heard the phone hang up.
