Chapter 279 What Are You Afraid Of
Hearing Michelle's name, Gregory's expression turned stern, and his voice grew colder. "Speak."
"Gregory, before we talk about this, you need to be mentally prepared," Henry repeatedly reminded, fearing Gregory might explode in anger.
Gregory remained expressionless. "If you don't talk, I'll hang up."
His attitude was so indifferent it seemed more like a threat than a request.
Henry pursed his lips. He realized he had worried for nothing; Gregory had a strong mental fortitude and didn't need his concern.
Clearing his throat, Henry began to relay his findings.
"I found out that over twenty years ago, Michelle indeed had close relations with many men. Those men privately cursed Michelle, calling her a homewrecker. One of those men is someone you know."
Gregory's brow furrowed slightly, his expression as cold as ice.
He parted his thin lips and asked, "Stephen?"
Henry replied, "Yes, how did you know, Gregory? I found out that there were always rumors back then about Stephen and Michelle being very close, often attending various events together. No wonder David thought Michelle was cheating."
Henry couldn't help but sigh. If his wife were always with a group of men, he would also have doubts.
Thinking about David's wife cheating on him, Henry felt a bit of sympathy.
But only for a moment.
Mostly, he felt schadenfreude.
He had never understood why a woman as excellent and beautiful as Michelle would be interested in a man like David, who seemed useless. Now he finally understood.
Gregory's thin lips pressed tightly together. After a long while, he coldly laughed and said, "If you can't speak properly, then shut up."
He had met Michelle and knew better than anyone that she was not a fickle woman.
There must be some misunderstanding.
"Send more people to investigate thoroughly, the more detailed, the better," said Gregory.
Henry pursed his lips. "If you want to know these things, why not just go directly to Stephen?"
Stephen was one of the people involved and naturally knew the truth better than anyone.
Gregory didn't respond and directly hung up the phone.
He tossed his phone aside and stayed alone in his office for a long time before getting up, putting on his coat, and heading out.
Half an hour later, Gregory drove to a private room in a high-end club.
Stephen was sitting in the room, drinking alone. Although he was over fifty, he still looked young and maintained a good physique, exuding the charm of a mature man.
As he quietly sipped his wine, he radiated an aura that seemed unattainable.
Gregory sat down in front of him and poured himself a glass of wine.
Stephen lifted his eyelids to glance at him and asked, "Gregory, it's rare for you to ask me out. Is something wrong?"
"You haven't been to the company recently. Are you having some trouble?" Gregory didn't answer his question but instead started talking about the past.
Stephen sighed heavily, his brows full of worry. "To be honest, things at home are a mess. I can't stand it anymore. I went abroad for a vacation recently, trying to find a quiet place to relax."
Gregory looked at him and asked, "Stephen, do you blame me?"
"What?"
"If I hadn't insisted on splitting the family assets back then, maybe you would be better off now. Do you blame me?"
Stephen laughed, patting Gregory's shoulder helplessly. "Gregory, what are you thinking? After you got married, splitting the family assets was inevitable. How could I blame you?"
He sighed, rubbing his temples. "Actually, I should be the one apologizing to you. If it weren't for Elaine and Olivia, you wouldn't be in such a difficult position."
Gregory took a sip of his wine without saying anything.
Stephen continued, "I've heard about Olivia colluding with the design competition judges. I've already sent her back to the countryside. She won't have a chance to target Abigail anymore."
A hint of surprise flashed in Gregory's eyes. He hadn't expected the usually weak Stephen to actually send Olivia away.
For years, Stephen had listened to Elaine in everything and was known as a henpecked husband.
He thought this matter would also be left unresolved.
Seeing the shock in Gregory's eyes, Stephen smiled bitterly. "Do you think I'm a failure? Being suppressed by a woman all these years."
Gregory's eyes flickered, and he tentatively asked, "Stephen, why have you always tolerated Elaine's bullying? You weren't like this before."
Stephen used to be handsome, confident, and full of vigor.
But at some point, everything changed.
The Stephen he once idolized had become despondent, uninterested in anything, and indifferent.
Stephen smiled bitterly and shook his head without answering.
Gregory had to rephrase his question. "I remember during an argument, Elaine mentioned something about you and Michelle..."
"Gregory." Stephen suddenly looked up, stopping Gregory from continuing.
Gregory quietly observed him, his eyes filled with scrutiny and curiosity, not understanding what Stephen was so concerned about.
"Stephen, are you afraid? What are you afraid of? Elaine? Or someone else?" Gregory asked.
"Don't ask anymore." Stephen took a deep breath, his hands raking through his hair. His eyes, which bore some resemblance to Gregory's, were filled with pain and sorrow that couldn't be ignored.
Gregory's curiosity grew. What could be so significant that Stephen was so wary of it?
He calmly said, "Stephen, I've recently heard some things. Back then, you and Michelle were very close. Some people even rumored that you two were together."
This was a vague statement. In reality, what he had found out was much worse.
He thought Stephen wouldn't answer, but to his surprise, Stephen suddenly looked up, his eyes red, staring at him.
"Shut up. Michelle and I had no improper relationship. You can say whatever you want about me, but don't slander her," Stephen said.
A hint of surprise flashed in Gregory's eyes. He hadn't expected such a strong reaction.
"Stephen, calm down. That's not what I meant. I just want to know what really happened back then," Gregory said.
Stephen calmed down, realizing he had overreacted.
He looked at Gregory suspiciously. "Why are you suddenly bringing up these old matters? Did something happen to Abigail?"
Gregory shook his head. "No, I just heard some bad rumors outside and wanted to ask."
Seeing that he couldn't get any more information, Gregory chatted with him for a bit before leaving in a hurry.
It seemed Michelle indeed had many secrets.
This only piqued his interest even more.
