Chapter 346 Looks a Lot Like Someone I Used to Know
Gregory tenderly held Abigail in his arms, gently stroking her back, and softly reassured her, "Just wait a little longer, it's not the right time yet."
Abigail wiped her tears, her rationality gradually returning. "Yes, I know."
Although she was eager to know why Michelle wasn't dead and why she hadn't tried to find her all these years, she also understood that now wasn't the right time to discuss these matters.
For the rest of the banquet, Abigail, Gregory, and Henry quietly observed Caius and Michelle from a corner.
As soon as Caius and Michelle appeared, they commanded the room's attention. Prominent business figures flocked to greet them, eager to establish connections with the Worthington family. Darwin's birthday party presented the perfect opportunity.
Despite resigning as the Worthington heir, Caius's status and power remained formidable. In Aerilon, few dared to challenge him. His business acumen and abilities surpassed those of Emrys and Cassian, which was why no new heir had been chosen after his resignation.
Abigail's eyes never left Michelle. After five years, Michelle was still as gentle and graceful as she remembered, her delicate features exuding an indescribable gentleness.
Memories of their childhood together flashed through Abigail's mind like a movie, frame by frame. The surge of emotions nearly overwhelmed her.
She struggled to hold back tears, gazing at Michelle through blurred vision, trying to make up for lost time.
As Michelle chatted with someone, she seemed to sense Abigail's stare and turned in her direction. At that moment, Abigail's heart nearly stopped, and she held her breath.
"Mom," she whispered, her lips barely moving.
Michelle didn't expect the person staring at her to be such a delicate, pretty young girl. When their eyes met, Michelle smiled gently, her expression tender and serene. Abigail's heart melted, and tears streamed down her face. She only snapped out of it when Michelle looked away.
Gregory, worried about Abigail's state, quickly cupped her face and softly coaxed, "It's okay, don't cry. Mom will worry if she sees you like this."
Abigail reached out her slender hand, tightly clutching Gregory's coat, and choked up as she looked at him. "Gregory, Mom doesn't recognize me. Why is this happening?"
Her trembling voice was filled with indescribable grievance.
Gregory felt deeply distressed and gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with his thumb, his voice growing even softer and more tender.
"Alright, maybe she has her reasons. After the birthday party, we'll find a chance to talk to her, okay?"
He believed that no mother in this world would be so heartless as to abandon her child.
Abigail nodded, sniffled, wiped away the tear stains from the corners of her eyes, and stopped crying.
"You're right, I can't let Mom worry."
She quickly pulled herself together, focusing intently on Michelle, afraid that she might disappear if she looked away.
However, Caius and Michelle didn't stay long at the birthday party. After chatting with a few people downstairs, they went upstairs to see Darwin.
After a while, they came back downstairs and left the Worthington Mansion.
Seeing this, Abigail couldn't care about anything else. She quickly lifted her dress and ran out in her high heels.
Outside, Caius took off his suit jacket and draped it over Michelle's shoulders. "It's getting chilly, be careful not to catch a cold."
Michelle looked up at him with a light smile. "I'm not cold, you should wear it."
"Take it. You're not in good health, and if you get sick again, I'll be heartbroken."
Caius adjusted Michelle's clothes, his deep eyes filled with tenderness and affection.
Knowing how assertive he could be, Michelle didn't refuse any further.
When the driver brought the car around, Caius opened the back door first and half-embraced Michelle as she got in.
Just then, a clear and urgent voice called out from behind, "Wait a minute."
Michelle turned to see a young girl in a dress running over, lifting her skirt as she ran.
But before she could see the girl's face clearly, Caius had already pushed her into the car.
Caius's tone, though still gentle, had a hint of coldness. "You go in first, I'll be back soon."
With that, he closed the car door and strode towards Abigail.
"Miss, do you need something?"
Caius's sharp gaze fell on Abigail, his eyes filled with scrutiny and curiosity.
Backlit, Abigail's face was obscured in darkness, making her features unclear. Caius felt a vague sense of familiarity but couldn't see her clearly.
Panting, Abigail stopped and tried to look past him, but with almost no light and the glass blocking her view, she saw nothing. Disappointment flashed in her eyes.
Seeing her looking behind him, Caius became more convinced that she had ulterior motives for approaching him and Michelle. His voice grew even colder.
"Miss, if you have no business here, please leave."
"I..."
Abigail opened her mouth, wanting to tell Caius that she was his biological daughter.
But before she could speak, she met his sharp, blade-like eyes.
All her words got stuck in her throat. Abigail nervously swallowed and said, "I thought Mrs. Worthington looked like someone I used to know, so I wanted to meet her. I mean no harm."
Caius sneered, his eyes growing colder. "That excuse has been used many times before."
Considering her young age, not being directly driven away was already quite courteous.
Abigail wanted to say more, but Gregory hurried over.
He pulled Abigail into his arms, shielding her from Caius's icy gaze.
"Mr. Worthington, it's an honor to meet you. My wife and Mrs. Worthington hit it off and wanted to make friends. I hope you don't mind."
"Are you Gregory?"
Caius squinted, studying him under the dim streetlight.
Gregory smiled and nodded. "I didn't expect Mr. Worthington to know me. It's my honor."
The wariness in Caius's eyes finally eased a bit, and a gentle smile appeared on his face. "I've heard about you in business circles. People speak highly of you, calling you a rare business genius. Nice to meet you."
"I'm honored. When it comes to business genius, I'm still far behind you."
Gregory's tone was humble, but Caius could clearly sense the powerful aura emanating from him.
His manners and demeanor fully showcased his deep-rooted etiquette and upbringing.
Caius couldn't help but show a look of appreciation. "I heard you're a friend of Quinn?"
