Chapter 379 No One Can Bully His Wife
When David opened his eyes, ready to confront Kayla, the room was empty. He asked the nurse if Kayla and Jessica had visited, but she said, "After you fell into a coma, Kayla left the hospital and hasn't returned since. We've tried to contact her to help with your bills, but we can't reach her."
David was so angry he almost spat blood.
He thought, 'What on earth is Kayla doing? Why hasn't she even paid the bills? Does she want me to die?'
When Kayla didn't answer, David called Jessica, but she was evasive.
"Dad, I haven't seen Mom recently either. I have something to do, so I'll hang up now."
Hearing the busy tone, David nearly smashed his phone. The nurse, with sympathetic eyes, quickly calmed him. By now, everyone knew his story well.
Rumor had it he mistreated his ex-wife's daughter for his lover and their illegitimate child, even scheming for his ex-wife's inheritance. Despite cutting ties with the daughter, happiness eluded him.
Still furious, David met the nurse's sympathetic gaze, which only fueled his anger.
He gritted his teeth and yelled at the nurse, "Get out, get out! What right do you have to pity me?"
He didn't need anyone's pity!
The nurse was startled by his sudden outburst and quickly left the room.
She thought, 'What a madman! No wonder he ended up like this; he deserved it!'
When Abigail got home from work, Gregory's message awaited her: photos of David at the hospital, looking angry, disheveled, and pitifully alone.
Abigail sighed, more reflective than sympathetic. David's situation was his own doing, given how he had treated her mother. Feeling better, she sent Gregory a cute emoji.
A soft, adorable cartoon kitten poked its head out of a box, shaking its head with the word "happy" above it.
Gregory stared at the cartoon emoji for a long time, his lips curling up unconsciously. After a moment, his long fingers quickly typed on the keyboard and sent a message: [Quinn just sent a message saying Mireille's credit card has been suspended, and she's been keeping a low profile lately.]
Abigail snorted: [Is that all? That's too light a punishment!]
If it weren't for Darwin's sake, she would have made Mireille pay dearly for offending her.
Seeing her message, Gregory couldn't help but imagine her pouting proudly, and he laughed.
He texted: [Of course, that's not all. Dad told Linnea about what Mireille did, and Linnea, not daring to offend Dad, put Mireille under house arrest. When her punishment is over, she'll probably come to Aramore to apologize to you in person.]
This requirement for a personal apology was something Gregory specifically asked Caius for.
No one could bully his wife. Anyone who hurt Abigail would pay. This was just the beginning.
Abigail was kind-hearted and avoided conflict, but Gregory was different. With his vengeful nature, no one escaped his notice.
Reading Gregory's message, Abigail felt a surge of emotion: [Gregory, thank you.]
She exited the WhatsApp interface and quickly opened Caius's chat window, her slender fingers flying across the screen: [I heard about Mireille. Thank you, Dad.]
In Aerilon, Caius, who was having tea with his wife, received the message and couldn't help but smile.
Michelle looked up at him, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "What made you so happy? It's rare to see you like this."
After years with Caius, she knew him well. Despite his gentle demeanor, his inherent coldness was unmistakable. He had never suddenly laughed at his phone before.
Caius's usually indifferent eyes softened slightly, showing a bit of laziness and joy.
He handed the phone to Michelle and said with a smile, "See for yourself. Abigail still has some conscience and hasn't let me down."
After seeing the content on the phone screen, Michelle raised an eyebrow slightly. "Abigail is a grateful child, but Mireille is getting more and more disobedient."
Caius put away his phone, his fingers idly tapping the table, and said slowly, "Mireille is just spoiled. Abigail is a year older than her and took her place as the eldest daughter of the Worthington family when she appeared. It's understandable that she's upset."
Michelle propped her chin with one hand, her elbow on the table, and sighed. "If only Abigail were our biological daughter. She's so likable, and for some reason, I always feel a strange closeness to her."
Caius's eyebrows twitched, but he remained silent. Michelle was right; Abigail was their real daughter. But admitting it would undo all his efforts.
Michelle was stubborn by nature, and even though she had been tormented by illness in recent years, her inherent stubbornness and obstinacy wouldn't change easily.
She might seem gentle on the surface, but once she got stubborn, no one could change her mind.
He didn't dare to take that risk.
Seeing him silent, Michelle's eyes flashed with doubt. "What are you thinking about?"
Caius snapped back to reality and suddenly smiled. "Nothing, I just think fate is really wonderful. Many people tried to get close to me through you, but you ignored them all. Yet Abigail won your favor the first time she came to Aerilon."
"That's because Abigail is excellent and aligns with my heart. Unlike those people before, I could tell at a glance that they approached me with ulterior motives."
Caius smiled and poured her some tea. "You're very good at this."
Michelle suddenly sighed. "Speaking of which, I never felt it before, but since Abigail left, I always feel a sense of emptiness around me."
She felt drawn to visit Aramore. The name stirred a vague, unsettling familiarity, hinting at distant memories.
