Chapter 193 The Interview
Tom could tell something was up with Tricia, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Ever since they started dating, Tricia would either blush or chatter non-stop whenever she saw him.
It was like she always had a million things to say to him.
But today, she seemed off.
Tom had other stuff to deal with, so he didn't press her. He grabbed his phone and car keys and headed out.
In the bedroom, Tricia heard the door open and close.
She hugged her knees tight, buried her face in her legs, and started crying.
Her hands gripped her sleeves like she was trying to hold back her emotions.
Even though it was summer, the floor was cold, but she didn't seem to notice, letting her painful feelings take over.
The next morning, when Tricia opened her eyes, they stung.
Her eyes were swollen from crying. She had to eat breakfast while icing her eyes, but it didn't help much.
Her eyes were puffy like walnuts, but she still went to an interview at a financial company.
The company was called VirtualBank, part of the Clark Group.
It wasn't a big company, but with the Clark Group backing it, it was reliable, and the pay and benefits were top-notch.
Tricia wasn't very confident because she knew she wasn't the best candidate.
The other interviewees had scholarships, great grades, and higher degrees. But she still wanted to give it a shot.
What if? What if she got lucky and landed a good job? Even if she didn't, she had nothing to lose, right?
So she gathered her courage and showed up.
There were a bunch of people there for the interview, more than a dozen. Tricia found a random corner to sit in.
After waiting for almost two hours, they finally called her name.
Her heart skipped a beat when she heard it.
She nervously swallowed, grabbed her resume, and walked into the small conference room.
Inside, there were four or five interviewers, and the guy in the center was someone she knew.
"Why is it you?"
"Why is it you?"
They both said at the same time, eyes wide with surprise.
The other interviewers were shocked too. 'What? Henry knows this girl?'
They looked at the plainly dressed Tricia and then at the well-dressed Henry, falling silent.
They seemed like they were from different worlds!
Tricia snapped out of it and quickly composed herself, greeting the interviewers, "Hello, everyone. I'm here for the interview. My name is Tricia, and I graduated from Aramore University with a degree in finance."
Henry leaned back in his chair, twirling a pen, looking like he was daydreaming. But no one knew how unsettled he felt.
Before Tricia could finish her introduction, she heard something fall.
She looked over and saw Henry's pen on the ground.
Henry's handsome face looked a bit embarrassed. "What are you looking at? Pick it up already!"
The pen had landed near Tricia's feet, and with people on either side of Henry, it was a hassle for him to get up.
Tricia hesitated for a second, then quickly picked up the pen and handed it to him. "Mr. Clark, your pen."
Henry took it and snorted, "At least you have good timing, but you should know that fresh graduates don't stand a chance in a big company like ours."
Tricia bit her lip, feeling a bit down. Was she about to get rejected again?
But she gathered her courage and said firmly, "Experience is built over time. I believe I can handle this job. Please give me a chance to prove myself."
Henry tapped the pen on the table and mocked, "A chance? Do you think our company is a charity? VirtualBank aims to grow and needs top talents."
He was blunt, almost like he wanted to write "You're not worthy" on his face.
A strong sense of inferiority and humiliation surged in Tricia's heart. She took a deep breath and looked up at him. "Mr. Clark, I admit I'm not the best, but you don't have to make me feel worthless. Since your company is so arrogant, I don't need to beg you to hire me."
With that, she turned and left without looking back.
The interviewers exchanged glances, not knowing what to say.
They couldn't figure out what Henry was thinking. No matter how bad the candidates were before, he always seemed indifferent. Why was he so aggressive toward Tricia?
Tricia's educational background wasn't top-notch, but Aramore University's finance department was one of the best in the country.
Henry stared at Tricia's departing figure for a long time, then turned to meet several complicated gazes.
He immediately got angry. "What are you looking at? Call the next one!"
The interviewers were startled by his sudden outburst and quickly called the next candidate.
They thought the matter was over.
But unexpectedly, Henry belittled every subsequent candidate.
Compared to that, what Tricia heard was nothing.
The criticized candidates were indeed ordinary and arrogant, so Henry's criticisms were not without merit.
The interviewers covered their faces, not daring to comment.
Ultimately, out of the 17 interviewees, only two were hired: one was an outstanding graduate from a prestigious foreign university, and the other was Tricia.
When they heard Tricia's name from Henry's mouth, they were all shocked.
They instantly understood Henry's unusual behavior today.
Everyone showed an "I get it" expression and gave Henry complicated looks.
On the other side, Tricia left VirtualBank in anger.
She clutched her resume tightly, silently cursing Henry "that bastard" hundreds of times.
'So despicable! Does he belittle me just because of my lower degree? Is it necessary to humiliate me like that? That despicable man, almost thirty and still single, serves him right! I hope he never finds a girlfriend in his life!'
Feeling down, she decided to drown her sorrows in alcohol and took a cab to a bar.
But just as she ordered her drink, she suddenly remembered that she might be pregnant and couldn't drink.
Tricia helplessly held her forehead and called Abigail to vent.
