Chapter 229 Who Dares to Mess With My Person

Abigail groaned as she rubbed her aching back, struggling to head to the bathroom.

Last night had been a killer; every step she took served as a vivid reminder of the savage roughness of their intimacy. The soreness lingered in her muscles, making every movement a small ordeal.

It took her forever just to make it to the bathroom. If she went through her morning routine as usual, she would definitely be late for work. So she sped it up, exchanged a quick greeting with Ralph, and dashed toward the door.

"Morning, Ralph. Gotta run. See you tonight."

"Hold up, at least grab some breakfast before you go. Work can wait," Ralph called after her, worried.

Abigail waved him off, looking stressed. "No time for breakfast. I've got an early meeting, and I'm already late."

Ralph frowned and pulled her back. "You can't skip breakfast. Mrs. Grace White and Mr. White told me to make sure you eat. What if you get low blood sugar?"

With no other choice, Abigail sat back down and quickly ate her breakfast.

Seeing her empty bowl, Ralph smiled. "That's better. You young folks don't know how to take care of yourselves. You'll regret it when you're older."

Abigail sighed in relief and jumped up. "Ralph, I'm off to work now!"

"Alright, be safe out there," Ralph advised.

"Got it!" Abigail waved as she hurried out of the villa.

She headed straight for the meeting room after she got to the office. When she arrived, Susan and Chris were waiting anxiously outside. When they saw her, they finally relaxed. "Ms. Martin, you're here. Everyone's already inside."

Abigail halted, taking a moment to regain her breath. The strain from her sprint was evident, but she steadied herself with a deep inhalation. Composing herself, she inquired with a determined edge, "Are the materials ready? Let's go in."

The atmosphere in the boardroom was tense, the space filled with scrutinizing eyes from board members who were notoriously difficult to appease. Abigail knew their perception of her was already less than favorable, and being tardy would only further affirm their skepticism.

Luckily, she made it on time.

Abigail had Chris hand out the materials and said, "I think everyone has seen our recent performance. We may not be at our peak, but we've made a recovery, showing that our efforts are paying off."

Just then, a board member with black-framed glasses cut her off, "Could you elaborate on what exactly spurred this improvement, Ms. Martin?"

Abigail was taken aback. "What are you getting at?"

"The whole company is buzzing about it. How long do you think you can keep it under wraps?" the man sneered.

Abigail's brow furrowed, her tone turning icy. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Care to explain?"

The man smirked and pulled out his phone, showing a video that had been making the rounds in the company yesterday.

"Ms. Martin, you're only in that chair because of Mr. White. Need I remind you? If Mr. White gets pissed at DM over this, we're all screwed!"

Abigail glanced at the phone screen and then looked away, her voice icy. "Instead of worrying about that, maybe you should think about what you've actually done for the company."

The guy was stunned, then furious, slamming his hand on the table. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"Exactly what I said," Abigail replied calmly, her expression unchanged. "The company's in this mess partly because of people like you who just leech off it."

The man opened his mouth to argue but was silenced by Abigail's cold, piercing stare. "If you don't want me to spill all your dirty secrets, then shut up."

Her voice was cold, her deep blue eyes sharp, exuding a powerful aura that brought an invisible pressure. The man's face turned red, but he couldn't say a word in rebuttal and was forced to remain silent.

The room went dead quiet, and everyone had a new perspective on Abigail.

They'd always thought of her as just a weak young girl. Sure, she'd managed DM well after taking over, but she was still too young. But now, they realized Abigail was not someone to mess with. Her cold and powerful presence sent chills down their spines.

At this point, Isaac, who had been silent, finally spoke up, "Ms. Martin, we're not trying to make things hard for you, but DM's current situation is really concerning."

With Isaac speaking up, other board members chimed in, "We need more than just recovery; we need to get back to our peak!"

Someone added, "DM won't keep dead weight, nor will it keep someone with poor character who damages our reputation!"

All the chatter gave Abigail a headache. She frowned and slammed the table, instantly silencing the room. Everyone looked at her, their eyes still filled with obvious schadenfreude and mockery.

Abigail calmly explained, "First, the video is under investigation. Secondly, today's meeting is to discuss upcoming work arrangements, not to gossip."

Isaac sneered, "But the video's already online, and DM's stock price has taken a hit. How do you plan to fix that?"

Abigail quietly looked at everyone present. She had never felt so isolated and helpless.

She thought these people would show her some respect for Michelle's sake. She thought that if she worked hard enough to prove herself, she could change their impression of her.

It was only at this moment that she clearly realized some people simply had no heart, and only saw cold, hard profit. If their interests were even slightly harmed, they would utterly devalue you, even denying all your past efforts and achievements.

Maybe that's just human nature.

Abigail closed her eyes tightly, feeling an immense coldness in her heart, a bone-chilling sensation all over her body.

At this moment, the meeting room door suddenly opened from the outside. A tall, slender figure appeared, striding toward Abigail. His steps were steady and composed, filled with unwavering determination.

"I'd like to see who dares to mess with my person."
