Chapter 221 Not a Girlfriend, But a Wife

Roman gulped, a bitter smile creeping onto his face.

Yeah, he regretted it.

When Abigail was chasing him, he didn't appreciate her. Instead, he got fooled by Jessica's sweet and kind facade. By the time he snapped out of it, he realized he had pushed Abigail away himself.

There was no going back.

Thinking about what he saw on his phone a few days ago—Abigail cuddled up with Gregory, smiling happily—made his heart ache.

Seeing Roman's downcast look, Gregory couldn't help but sneer. It was Roman's choice to give up back then, and now he showed up acting all sentimental.

Gregory, clearly annoyed, asked, "Do you need something else? If not, please leave. I have work to do."

Roman stayed silent for a moment before finally speaking, "I'm not here to compete for your wife. I just want to know if the offer to work at the White Group is still open?"

Gregory thought for a moment, his eyes scrutinizing Roman. "You want to work at the White Group?"

"Yeah, I've been out of school for a while and haven't had a job. Staying home all the time isn't good; I need some experience," Roman replied.

Gregory nodded slightly and called Leo in through the intercom. Soon, there was a knock on the office door, and Leo walked in, standing straight in front of Gregory. "Mr. White."

Gregory instructed, "Check if there are any vacant positions in the company. If there are, take Roman to report directly."

Leo gave Roman a surprised look, then nodded. "Mr. Roman White, please follow me."

Roman's face was tense as he silently followed Leo. He knew that asking Gregory for help meant he had lost, completely and utterly. But he had no other choice. Even though his father Stephen had shares in the White Group, it was a small amount. His mother and Jessica, both with their lavish habits, burnt through money daily. At this rate, the family's money would soon be gone. Thinking about it gave Roman a headache.

'Why is there such a big gap between people? Why wasn't I the one to inherit the company instead of Gregory?' Roman couldn't help but think.

If he had inherited the company, maybe he wouldn't be in such a tough spot now. Jessica wouldn't be nagging him every day, calling him useless.

Lost in thought, they soon arrived at the HR department. Leo said something to the HR manager, who looked at Roman in surprise. But he quickly returned to normal and checked the computer for any vacant positions.

Coincidentally, there was one that had just opened up recently.

The HR manager hesitated, "There is one, but it's a lower position. I'm not sure if Mr. Roman White can accept it."

Roman agreed without hesitation. "I can."

In the past, he would have been unwilling. After all, he had always been pampered and treated with respect; how could he accept a lower position? But now, he had no other choice.

The HR director was sweating bullets, expecting Roman to flip out, dismiss the position as beneath him, or even cause a scene. But to his surprise, Roman was unexpectedly chill about it. At that moment, his opinion of Roman improved a lot.

"Alright, I'll get your official onboarding started. I'll take you to your seat, and someone will be assigned to show you the ropes," the HR director said.

Roman took note of the HR director's instructions and thanked him with a smile.

After handling Roman's onboarding, Leo headed straight back to the president's office. "Mr. White, it's done."

Gregory didn't even look up, responding with a cool indifference.

Leo stood there, hesitating before asking, "Mr. White, are you sure about letting Mr. Roman White join the company? I have a feeling his intentions aren't that simple."

Gregory sneered, "Don't worry."

If Roman were truly capable, he wouldn't have ended up as a notorious playboy. So, Gregory didn't take Roman seriously at all.

What puzzled him the most was Tom. Since Tom left DM, he hadn't made any significant moves, as if waiting for the right moment.

The more someone like that stayed hidden, the more dangerous they were. Knowing this, Gregory's people had been keeping a keen eye on Tom, but the latter had been too well hidden, and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't unearth anything about him.

Thinking of this, Gregory's heart sank, and he instructed, "Get more people on Tom and report any developments to me immediately."

"Okay, I'll get on it right away," Leo replied.

After Leo left, Gregory picked up his phone and messaged Abigail: [As a reward for resting well at home today, I'll bring you your favorite cake tonight. What flavor do you want?]

As soon as the message was sent, Abigail replied instantly: [Chocolate!]

Gregory's mouth curved into a smile, the joy in his eyes almost overflowing.

After work, Gregory drove to a cake shop to buy Abigail's favorite cake. After buying the cake, Gregory's gaze fell on a nearby store. He hesitated for a moment, then walked toward the store.

The shop assistant, seeing him, couldn't hide her amazement and asked excitedly, "Sir, are you here to buy flowers?"

"Yes, I want a bouquet of red roses," Gregory said.

He vaguely remembered that last time Henry had said that girls loved roses. Later he followed the advice, bought a bouquet for Abigail, and she loved it.

Hearing this, the shop assistant couldn't help but show a hint of disappointment, thinking, 'Of course, handsome men always have girlfriends! Who could be so lucky to have such a perfect, tall, and handsome boyfriend?'

The shop assistant wrapped the flowers and handed them to Gregory, happily saying, "Sir, you're so thoughtful. Your girlfriend will definitely love them."

"Not a girlfriend," Gregory said.

The shop assistant was stunned, then her expression changed as she looked at Gregory, thinking, 'Not a girlfriend? Could it be a side chick? Don't tell me this one is a heartbreaker.'

Gregory didn't care about the shop assistant's expression and continued, "She's my wife."

After saying that, he didn't give the shop assistant any time to process what she had heard, paid, and immediately turned to leave. The shop assistant stared at his back in a daze for a long time, then excitedly screamed.

'Oh my, that was a heartthrob right out of a romance movie!' the shop assistant thought.
