Chapter 416 By Your Side for a Lifetime
Emrys and Marlowe exchanged a silent glance. Since Cassian was taken away, they had grown quieter.
Caius, like a beast ready to pounce, watched everything related to Darwin. With the will nearly settled, they dared not challenge Darwin's decision.
But there was always someone who couldn't see the situation clearly and sneered. "What right does an outsider have to sit here?"
As soon as Bruce spoke, the room fell silent, and all eyes turned to him.
Caius narrowed his eyes slightly, put down his utensils, and asked in a deep voice, "What did you say? Try saying that again."
Seeing that Caius was on the verge of losing his temper, Mireille quickly reached out and tugged on Bruce's sleeve, whispering, "Bruce, don't say anything reckless. Behave."
Bruce shook off her hand impatiently and said, "Dad has already been kicked out. Do you think they'll still treat us well?"
Mireille's face turned ashen. Despite her heartbreak over her father's expulsion, she knew he deserved it. Why couldn't Bruce understand?
Darwin still held some goodwill towards them. As long as they stayed in the Worthington family, there were possibilities. When Darwin passed, the inheritance would be divided among the elders, ensuring their share. With that wealth, they could bring their father back. Even if Caius couldn't tolerate them, they could start anew elsewhere.
However, Bruce was filled with anger and glared at Abigail. "What? Am I not telling the truth? Even though everyone acknowledges you, what right do you have to inherit Grandpa's estate? How long have you been part of the Worthington family?"
Without Abigail, no one would care for Caius in the future. His vast assets would be divided among the younger generation. But with Abigail as his daughter, everything changed. Caius could leave his entire inheritance to her, leaving Bruce with nothing.
His parents had once considered making him Caius's son, but now that was impossible. How could Bruce not feel resentful?
Just as Caius was about to lose his temper, Michelle gently grabbed his hand.
He turned his head, puzzled, and saw her shaking her head at him. Then she said to Bruce, "Bruce, I know your father's situation makes you unhappy, but he made a mistake. If it were a minor mistake, we wouldn't have kicked him out of the Worthington family, but he made an irreparable one. I hope you understand."
Bruce sneered. "What if I refuse to understand?"
Michelle paused, her voice still gentle. "Caius didn't completely destroy your father. If you start a conflict with us now, you will get nothing."
Under Michelle's gentle and clear gaze, Bruce's anger dissipated significantly. Rationality returned as he took a deep breath, lowered his head, and continued eating in silence.
Michelle, sensing his compliance, breathed a sigh of relief and winked at Caius. Sometimes, reason and understanding hold more power than force. People naturally sought benefits and avoided harm; once the pros and cons were clear, choices became easier.
The dining table returned to silence. Darwin remained stern, and everyone else fell quiet. The meal concluded in this heavy silence.
After dinner, Darwin went upstairs to rest with the help of a servant. Abigail's long-suppressed anger surged up, and she walked towards Bruce.
Bruce was deep in thought when a shadow suddenly appeared in front of him.
He slowly looked up and met Abigail's cold eyes. "What is it?"
"Apologize," Abigail said concisely.
Bruce thought he had misheard, "What?"
Abigail repeated, "Apologize. Apologize to me and my dad. Didn't I tell you before not to provoke me easily, or I wouldn't let you off?"
Bruce laughed angrily. "I can apologize to Caius, but what right do you have to make me apologize?"
Abigail said, "Even as an adopted daughter, I understand respect better than you, who were born and raised in the Worthington family. What about you?"
Bruce was at a loss for words.
Gregory stood behind Abigail, his narrow eyes slightly narrowed, his cold gaze falling on Bruce, making him feel a bit scared.
At the sight of Gregory, Bruce's mind flashed back to the time he was beaten by him, and his wounds began to ache again.
"Sorry!" Bruce closed his eyes tightly and muttered softly.
Abigail raised an eyebrow. "I didn't hear you. Louder."
"Sorry! Is that good enough?" This time, Bruce raised his voice so that the entire living room could hear.
Abigail smiled with satisfaction. "Yea, that'll do. If there's a next time, it won't be as simple as an apology."
Having gotten what she wanted, Abigail turned and pulled Gregory back to their room without looking back.
Bruce stared at their backs, gritting his teeth, his eyes filled with hatred.
Sensing the gaze behind him, Gregory turned and gave a cold glance.
Bruce hurriedly looked away.
Gregory sneered inwardly, pulled Abigail into his arms, and whispered, "Don't be angry. It's not worth it to get angry over someone like him. No matter how dissatisfied he is, it won't change the fact that you're the eldest daughter of the Worthington family."
"It's not that. I just don't want people to misunderstand that Caius and Michelle recognized me as their daughter just to inherit Grandpa's estate." Abigail had always been sensitive, especially when it came to Caius and Michelle.
Gregory sighed softly, lowered his head, and gave her a gentle kiss on the lips. "I understand. I understand everything."
It was precisely because he understood that he felt even more heartache.
Abigail slowly raised her head, looking at him seriously, and asked, "Darling, will you stay by my side forever?"
"Yes," Gregory answered without hesitation.
Abigail asked, "Will you be there for me whenever I need you, no matter how busy you are?"
"Yes," Gregory answered.
Abigail's lips curved slightly, a warm feeling spreading through her cold heart. "I believe you."
Gregory held Abigail's slender, soft waist tightly, his gaze falling on her lips. His Adam's apple moved slightly as he lowered his head to kiss her.
At that moment, a light cough suddenly came from behind. "Looks like I came back at the wrong time."
