Chapter 66 We'll Use Covert Methods.
Elaine wasn't having it.
Just thinking about how much Roman had suffered because of Abigail made her blood boil.
She even wanted to kill Abigail to let off steam.
But she still had some sense left and shook her head. "I can't help you with this. Abigail isn't the helpless, unloved girl she used to be. If Gregory finds out, we're toast."
No one knew Gregory's methods better than she did.
He seemed indifferent and didn't get angry easily.
But when he did, those who crossed him never had a good ending.
She'd heard rumors about business partners who offended Gregory with rude remarks.
Later, their companies faced one problem after another.
Either they got caught cutting corners or were reported for tax evasion.
One company's exec was even arrested for allegedly molesting and drugging female employees, tanking the company's stock.
Everyone guessed it was Gregory's doing, but there was no proof.
Gregory did it so cleanly, without leaving any traces.
That was what made him so scary.
Crossing someone like him was asking for trouble.
Elaine was greedy and money-hungry, but she knew some lines shouldn't be crossed.
Olivia sneered, a hint of malice in her eyes. "If direct methods don't work, we'll go covert. As long as we don't leave any traces, no one will suspect us."
Elaine met Olivia's gaze and was startled by her look.
For the first time, she realized that this seemingly gentle Olivia wasn't as simple as she appeared.
Seeing the fear and hesitation in her eyes, Olivia persuaded, "Aunt Elaine, even if you don't think about yourself, think about Roman. If I marry Gregory, whether Roman inherits the family fortune or my son does, won't we all benefit?"
Elaine hesitated.
Olivia was right. Even if she didn't think about herself, she had to think about Roman.
Ever since Jessica cried to Roman last time, she had been waiting for his call.
Given Roman's personality and how much he cared for her, he should have broken off the engagement with Abigail without a second thought.
But today, Jessica waited all day and still hadn't heard from Roman.
This made her anxious and uneasy.
'Could something have happened? Could it be that Abigail didn't want to break off the engagement?'
The more Jessica thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. She immediately took out her phone and called Roman.
The phone rang for a long time, but no one answered.
Jessica frowned and called several more times before someone finally picked up.
As soon as the call connected, Jessica heard loud music through the phone's earpiece.
There were also many excited cheers from both men and women.
"Roman, where are you?" Jessica asked with a frown.
Roman put down his glass, gestured to his friends, and walked out of the dance floor.
Once he reached a quiet place, he finally spoke, "Jessica."
"Roman, what are you doing? Why is it so noisy there?"
"Bar," Roman replied shortly.
Jessica noticed that Roman's voice was a bit low, but she was too preoccupied to care.
She urgently asked, "Roman, didn't you say you were going to break off the engagement with Abigail? Did you succeed?"
Roman paused for a moment before nodding slowly. "Yeah, I did."
Jessica jumped up from the bed, her voice shooting up. "Really? That's awesome, Roman! We can finally be together openly!"
While Jessica was over the moon, Roman's face showed no happiness.
Breaking off the engagement was what he wanted most, so he should be thrilled.
But he couldn't feel happy at all.
The cost of breaking off the engagement was too high.
Gregory had frozen his bank card, and he had to call his most hated ex-fiancée "aunt".
The worst part was he still hadn't convinced Grace to let Jessica marry into the Martin family.
Grace already didn't like Jessica because of her family background.
With Abigail marrying Gregory, it would be even harder for Jessica to marry into the White family.
So, after leaving the White Manor, he went straight to the bar with his friends.
But Jessica had no clue about his troubles and was so excited. She held her phone tightly, her eyes red.
She was in the hospital visiting David at the time.
So, her words were also heard by David and Kayla.
They exchanged glances and both looked delighted.
Jessica stood up, her voice full of excitement. "Roman, I've waited so long for this. My biggest dream is to marry you. It's finally coming true."
Hearing Jessica's excited voice made Roman feel even more guilty.
"Jessica, I..."
He wanted to tell her things weren't as simple as she thought.
Grace hadn't agreed to let her marry into the White family, and Elaine might not either.
But Jessica was too caught up in her emotions to hear him.
She said, "Roman, don't worry. I'll work hard to be worthy of you."
"Jessica, no, what I want to say is, actually, my grandmother..."
"I know, Roman. Grandmother might not like me because of my sister, but it's okay. She'll see my good qualities one day."
Roman couldn't find the right moment to tell the truth before the call ended.
He sighed, tossed his phone aside, and took a swig of his drink.
As soon as she hung up, Jessica hugged Kayla tightly and screamed excitedly in the hospital room.
"Mom, Abigail finally broke off the engagement with Roman. I think I'll be marrying into the White family soon!"
Kayla was also very excited, holding Jessica's hand tightly, her eyes moist. "Really? We've finally waited for this day. All your efforts for Roman weren't in vain."
Even David had a smile on his face, no longer looking as weak as before.
Today was indeed a good day. Next, he needed to take good care of his health and then go to the White family to discuss the marriage.
Jessica was his favorite daughter, not just because she was sweet and likable, but also because Kayla knew how to please him.
Although Kayla didn't come from a high background, she loved him enough.
Unlike Michelle, who was strong-willed, Kayla knew best how to make a man happy.
So over the years, no matter how many lovers David had outside, he never let any of them into the house.
When he heard that Roman had broken off the engagement with Abigail, his first reaction was happiness.
As for what would happen to Abigail, David didn't care at all.
'Abigail is so unlikeable. It serves her right.'
But soon, his joy turned to sorrow.
