Chapter 17 The Annoying Person
Leo nodded and turned to leave the office. Just before he left, he hesitated at the open door and turned back to face Gregory. "Mr. White, you seem to be in a good mood today, huh?"
Gregory was surprised that someone could tell. "Is it that obvious?"
Leo nodded and spoke earnestly, "Very obvious. It seems like you're getting along well with Mrs. White."
Gregory flashed images of Abigail blushing beneath him and her captivating smile through his mind. "It's going okay," he replied, quickly retracting his smile when he realized it was gossip from a subordinate. He spoke in a stern tone, "Don't you have work to do? Are you idle?"
"No, not at all. I'll get to it right away." Leo chuckled awkwardly, opened the door, and hurriedly left.
On the other side, the project manager returned to his office, still feeling a bit dizzy and not yet recovered from the shock.
It wasn't until a colleague called out to him that he finally lifted his head and asked, "What's going on?"
"Why are you so absent-minded? Did something happen?" said a young girl who was speaking to him.
The project manager, known for his stern demeanor in order to establish his authority in the company, was taken aback by Gregory's transformation and momentarily forgot to maintain his own cold and aloof image.
He looked around, then gestured upwards and lowered his voice, "Have you noticed that Mr. White seems a bit off today?"
Although he had tried to speak quietly, the office was quiet at the moment.
The colleagues sitting around him unavoidably overheard the conversation and came closer as if they had found a kindred spirit.
"You noticed, too? When I went to report this morning, I made a small mistake and thought I would be scolded, but Mr. White just said to be more careful next time."
He was still pleasantly surprised by it!
Everyone in the company knew that Gregory was always very strict about work and never allowed any carelessness.
The project manager also nodded in agreement and said excitedly, "Yeah, I thought Mr. White would explode with anger. I even prepared to pack up and resign, but he just let me off."
As they gathered together and continued talking, they felt that something was not quite right.
Many of them were long-time employees of the company who had been working there for several years and had never encountered such a situation.
While they were engrossed in their discussion, they were interrupted by a coughing sound at the door.
When they saw who was standing there, their faces changed dramatically, and they quickly returned to their workstations.
Leo's gaze swept over the office, and he turned and left.
Now, no one dared to discuss Gregory in the office, but they couldn't suppress their curiosity and could only chat about it in the group chat.
All the topics revolved around Gregory and speculated on why he suddenly seemed like a changed person, unsettling them.
As soon as Leo returned to his workstation, his phone started buzzing with messages.
He looked at it and saw that the group chat was discussing Gregory.
He found it somewhat amusing, but seeing how unsettled and unproductive the employees were, he decided to do a good deed.
He typed a sentence on his phone screen and clicked send.
So everyone in the group saw the message sent by Leo, who hadn't been active in the chat for a long time: "You should thank Mrs. White for being able to change Mr. White's temperament like this. Only she could do it."
Once this message was sent out, the group fell silent for several seconds before being flooded with messages.
Leo opened it and saw that the screen was full of astonished expressions.
"Mrs. White? When did Mr. White get married? Sob sob, I'm heartbroken!"
"Why hasn't news of the wedding spread? Mr. White is keeping it too well hidden," several employees said in the work group chat.
Many employees began mentioning him in the chat, and some even dared to message him, asking if Gregory really got married privately. Soon, the entire work group was filled with the latest news, and within three minutes, everyone in the company knew about it. The atmosphere was absolutely sensational.
While everyone was frenzying in the chat, a message suddenly got buried under the constant influx of new messages.
Gregory: "Yep, it's true."
Many unintentionally overlooked this short sentence. But once they realized what they had missed, they quickly scrolled up and searched for the conversation history. After they saw who had sent that message, everyone fell silent and simultaneously put down their phones. They finally understood how it felt to have their gossiping about the boss exposed.
Throughout the day, the employees were on edge, afraid Gregory would be angry because they gossiped. Fortunately, Gregory didn't say anything after that message. It wasn't until the end of the workday that everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief. Some of the timid ones were even too scared to touch their phone for the entire afternoon, afraid of being called in for questioning. Thankfully, they managed to make it through the toughest part of the day.
However, the employees, who were supposed to go home in the evening, started forming department gossip chats and made plans to have dinner together. Many of them were still itching to gossip.
Upon seeing the message, they immediately agreed.
As for the instigator who caused all of this, he stopped talking after sending that message. His phone kept ringing throughout the day as he had forgotten to turn off the sound. When he finally checked it, he found out that Leo had actually shared the news of his wedding. Nonetheless, he was in a good mood today and didn't bother to confront Leo. Instead, he decided to confirm the news in the group chat, which was a rare occurrence. It never occurred to him what kind of commotion would ensue after he said those words.
After leaving the group chat, Gregory noticed a new message. He treasured his privacy and rarely revealed his personal WhatsApp account to others. Usually, even when handling company matters, he communicated through his assistant, Leo. After all, as the head of The White Group, with tens of thousands of employees, he was too busy to handle everything on his own. So, he had yet to learn who could be messaging him.
His well-defined fingers tapped the bottom of the screen, and when he opened the message, he was surprised to see that it was from Abigail.
Gregory stared at Abigail's name for about half a minute before finally remembering that he had forgotten to message her back. He then glanced at the time of the message, realizing it had been sent two hours ago, and couldn't help but sigh in frustration.
Two hours ago, he had been in a meeting and hadn't checked WhatsApp at all. Would Abigail be upset that he hadn't replied for so long?
