Chapter 79 Fertility Issues
After Abigail left, Kayla quickly told David, "I swear I didn't hire that guy. I'd never hurt Abigail. You have to believe me."
"Who did you hire?" David asked coldly.
Kayla froze, scrambling for a name.
From the start, she never planned to find a great guy for Abigail. She weeded out all the good-looking, well-educated men and kept the ones who seemed decent but had bad personalities—abusive guys, mama's boys, flirts. She ended up picking Robert, a quiet gambler.
Her plan was for Robert to pretend to be successful and win Abigail over slowly. But he got exposed too fast.
She had to think quickly and told David, "I did my research. The guy's family has some assets. They're not rich, but he's a good person, very gentle. If Abigail doesn't like him, fine, but why would she accuse me?"
Kayla wiped her tears, looking very hurt.
David started to doubt. Over the years, Kayla had treated Abigail well and shouldn't have done such a thing. 'So, was Abigail lying?'
Back at the Martin home, everyone sat on the couch in silence, looking grim. The housemaids were quiet, guessing what had happened.
Just at noon, Kayla had called to say David was being discharged and to decorate the house nicely.
Jessica's eyes were filled with tears as she looked at David and Kayla. "Mom, Dad, do you really believe my sister is marrying Mr. White?"
David's face was stern, lips pressed tight, saying nothing. It wasn't about belief; Gregory had admitted it himself.
Jessica marrying Gregory would be a huge honor for him and the Martin family. 'But why Abigail? Why the daughter I like the least?'
Thinking about how he forced Abigail to break off her engagement and leave home, David felt regret. Abigail must still be mad at him. If he hadn't been so harsh, Gregory would have respected him. Now, as Gregory's father-in-law, he'd have dignity. But it was too late.
Abigail was still angry and wouldn't help DM Group through its troubles. The more David thought, the more he felt he had lost, his face full of regret.
Jessica had been down since returning from the hospital, her eyes red from crying. She choked up, "Mom, Dad, what if Grace doesn't want me to marry Roman? What should I do?"
Kayla comforted her, "Don't worry. You're so sweet and likable. Grace will definitely like you."
"But..." Jessica glanced at David, worried.
David noticed and asked, "But what?"
Jessica lowered her head, pretending to be hurt, "But Grace must have heard bad rumors about me. I'm afraid she misunderstands me."
David immediately understood. It was all Abigail's fault.
In most families, sisters looked out for each other. But Abigail always targeted and bullied Jessica.
David's face darkened. "Don't worry, Jessica. I'll call Grace tonight and clear things up."
Jessica's eyes lit up. "Thanks, Dad. You're the best!"
Even if Abigail married Gregory, she wouldn't win David's affection. Roman, David, and Kayla would all stand by Jessica. She could take away everything Abigail cared about, just like before.
She'd heard Gregory was ruthless. A powerful man like him had seen all kinds of beauties. No way he'd be interested in someone like Abigail, who only had a pretty face and couldn't benefit his family or career. Once Gregory got tired of her, Abigail wouldn't be so arrogant anymore. Jessica eagerly anticipated that day.
David, listening to Jessica, became even more determined. Jessica was his favorite daughter, the one who knew how to be grateful. Unlike Abigail, who didn't understand gratitude.
Before bed, Kayla leaned against David and asked, "Do you really believe Abigail married Gregory? Someone like him wouldn't get married without any news. Could it be that Abigail..."
She stopped, realizing something was wrong, and quickly covered her mouth, looking at David in panic.
David frowned and sneered, "It's her choice. I can't control her anymore."
Deep down, he didn't believe Gregory would marry Abigail. To him, Abigail had a bad temper and always opposed him. The only thing she had going for her was her looks. Plus, she used to be Roman's fiancée.
Kayla smirked slightly. "I heard Mr. White has fertility issues and can't have kids. Abigail won't be mistreated if she marries him, right?"
"He treated you like that, so don't worry about her. But you reminded me. If Mr. White can't have kids, the company will go to Roman."
David fell into deep thought. Jessica was his pride. If she married Roman, the whole Martin family would benefit. When Roman inherited the White Group, he'd control the entire White family. David had to make sure Jessica married Roman.
The more he thought about it, the more excited he got. He grabbed his phone and called the White Manor. Ralph answered.
As soon as Ralph heard David introduce himself, his face turned cold. Everyone in the White family knew Abigail had been mistreated by the Martins, all because of David.
Though he felt disdain, Ralph stayed respectful. "Mr. White, I'm sorry, but Mrs. Grace isn't here. If it's not urgent, you can call back later."
David quickly said, "No problem. I'll call back later. Please let Grace know."
After hanging up, David's fawning face darkened. "How dare a servant talk to me like that?"
Kayla stepped forward to comfort him. "David, don't be angry. It's not worth it. Once you're Roman's father-in-law, no one will dare treat you like this!"
David's anger subsided a bit. "You're right."
