Chapter 25 Provocation
Waiting for them to get ready was the most difficult time for him.
"I..." Abigail began to speak but was interrupted by Gregory.
"You don't need to hide in front of me. Your emotions are written all over your face," he said, reaching out to touch her cheek.
Abigail wondered to herself, "Am I really that obvious?"
Seeing her puzzled look, Gregory nodded with a light laugh and said, "Yes, your emotions are quite clear."
Abigail felt a sudden embarrassment, and her face turned red. She dared not look into Gregory's eyes any longer.
Noticing her expression, Gregory's smile deepened. "So, can you tell me what you're nervous about now?"
Gregory wondered to himself, "Is she not wanting to break off the engagement?"
At the thought of that possibility, a chill filled Gregory's eyes. An impulse to destroy everything was almost uncontrollable in his chest.
Abigail bit her lip and answered honestly, "I'm afraid of what might happen if Grace gets angry. After all, I used to be your nephew's fiancée, and now I'm suddenly married to you."
Her answer brought great joy to Gregory.
Gregory felt the anger in his chest suddenly extinguished, and the heaviness in his chest dissipated.
He reached out and held Abigail's clenched hand in his palm, asking her, "We've already taken care of the marriage license. Does it really matter if others agree or not?"
But Abigail shook her head, her expression serious. "Grace is not just anyone. She has been kind to me, and I don't want her to dislike me."
If she cared about what others thought, she wouldn't have agreed to marry Gregory.
Abigail cared about Grace.
She didn't want to lose a caring elder because of her stubbornness.
Just as she was lost in thought, a warm sensation suddenly came from the top of her head.
Her hair was gently rubbed by a large hand, the movement soft and full of compassion.
Abigail looked up and met Gregory's deep eyes.
She heard him speak with determination, "How could anyone? Abigail, you're so obedient and sensible. How could anyone hate you?"
Gregory's voice was low and magnetic as if it possessed a calming power.
Although Abigail knew he was trying to comfort her, her nervous emotions miraculously eased.
"Gregory, I'm not as good as you say." Abigail blushed slightly, and the light pink color accentuated her delicate face like a blooming rose emitting an alluring fragrance.
Gregory's Adam's apple rolled slightly as he struggled to divert his gaze. "How could that be? Abigail, you're beautiful, gentle in character, kind, and obedient. My mom will definitely like you."
Seeing Gregory's serious and focused expression as he praised her, Abigail's heart inexplicably skipped a beat.
But before she could say anything, Gregory continued, "Actually, I hope you can have fewer strengths and be a little more willful."
Even though Abigail was 22 years old, Gregory considered her an immature child.
Abigail should have grown up under the love of her parents, but she was forced to bear more than her peers.
The people who cared about her all left her. She could only bury all her grievances in her heart, with no outlet to vent, forcing herself to become sensible.
Every time Gregory saw Abigail pretending to be sensible, he felt like his heart was being crushed.
He wanted to hold Abigail in his arms and give her everything he could, the best of everything.
Gregory hoped to live a carefree, safe, and happy life for the rest of her life.
Abigail was shocked by Gregory's words and could not speak. She just stared at him dumbfoundedly.
This was the first time someone had told her that she could be willful.
Before, everyone would say to her, "Abigail, can you be a little more sensible? Can you be good and obedient?"
In order to become the obedient child in everyone's eyes, she gradually began to suppress her true nature and became someone completely different from herself.
Abigail felt her eyes suddenly stinging and her throat clogged, making it hard for her to speak.
"Gregory..." she managed to say.
Gregory couldn't help but chuckle and said, "Don't cry, or my mom will definitely think I'm bullying you. She might even think I forced you to marry me."
Abigail was still moved, but she suddenly laughed at his words. "Gregory, you don't have to say that last sentence."
His words made her cry and laugh. She thought, "I must look so ugly right now."
However, after talking with him, all the negative emotions that had accumulated in Abigail's heart disappeared.
She no longer felt as nervous as she did before.
Abigail turned to look out the car window, her gaze becoming more determined.
She thought, "No matter what lies ahead, I must break off this engagement today. And now, I'm not alone anymore. Even if the sky falls, Gregory is there to support me."
Gregory had been observing her expression all along. Seeing that she finally understood, he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
The car soon arrived at the White Manor and slowly came to a stop.
The White Manor was a large garden-style estate with a small fountain in the center surrounded by pavilions and tranquil paths. Following the path forward, there was a large artificial lake and, further back, a vast garden.
The villas were located at the very end of the estate.
Grace lived in the main villa, while Stephen and his wife and son lived in the east. The servants lived in the villa at the back.
Although the mansion was very large, it was cleaned so well that there were hardly any fallen leaves on the road.
The driver, Jason Zane, slowed down and stopped the car. Just then, Gregory's phone suddenly rang.
He looked down at the caller ID, frowned tightly, and said to Abigail, "I have some work to take care of. You go ahead and go in."
"Okay," Abigail nodded and opened the car door to get out.
As she was about to close the car door, Gregory suddenly reminded her, "Don't be nervous. If anyone dares to give you trouble, go find my mom."
Abigail smiled, feeling warm. "I got it, thank you, Gregory."
Upon hearing that Gregory had returned, the maids of the White Manor immediately ran out to welcome him.
But as they approached, they realized that Abigail had gotten out of Gregory's car.
Everyone was shocked and glanced at each other as if they hadn't recovered from the shock yet.
They were all curious about when Gregory's relationship with Abigail had become so good, and they were also surprised that he allowed her to ride in his car and come back.
