Chapter 28 Revealing the Truth
With Andy's support, Grace descended the stairs step by step and looked downstairs. "What happened? You were so loud, I could hear it from upstairs."
Abigail stood up from the couch and politely greeted, "Grace!"
Upon seeing her, Grace immediately showed a loving smile.
She reached out her hand towards Abigail and looked at her tenderly. "Abigail, you finally came to visit me. You haven't been here for so long. I thought you forgot about me."
Abigail had grown up under Grace's care, and Grace was very fond of her.
Grace had always wanted a daughter when she was young.
Unfortunately, she tried for a long time and ended up giving birth to a son.
What made her even more angry was that Gregory was not close to her at all, and his expression was always cold.
Grace felt that Gregory was nothing like her.
Abigail smiled sweetly and explained softly, "How is that possible? I've been a little busy lately. Didn't I come to see you today?"
With just one sentence, Abigail instantly lifted the deliberate seriousness of Grace's expression. "Alright, I won't tease you anymore. I just received a painting yesterday. Will you accompany me to take a look later?"
"Okay," Abigail obediently replied, dependently clinging to Grace's arm, appearing very intimate.
Gregory couldn't help but look at her several times, feeling inexplicably jealous.
Never before had Abigail shown such a relaxed expression in front of him.
She seemed to be afraid of him, always nervous and cautious when around him.
Gregory raised his hand to touch his face and wondered, "Am I really that terrifying?"
After chatting with Abigail for a while, Grace finally looked at Gregory. "Why did you come back home and cause so much trouble? What happened?"
Gregory sighed in exasperation. "Can't I come back if I'm not causing trouble?"
Grace glanced at him and said, "You never wanted to come back before. Spit it out. What's the matter?"
As Gregory's mother, she knew him too well.
Before Gregory could say anything, Abigail spoke up. "Grace, actually, it's something I need to talk to you about."
"It's you, Abigail? Then it's not a problem. Go ahead. I'm listening," Grace's tone was very gentle.
This was a stark contrast to how she was with Gregory.
Gregory was speechless, and at this point, he was starting to doubt if he was truly Gregory's biological son.
Abigail hesitated and glanced at Grace, suggesting, "Grace, you might need to brace yourself for this."
Abigail was worried that Grace wouldn't be able to handle the news suddenly, considering her fragile health.
Grace chuckled at Abigail's serious appearance. "Abigail, I appreciate your concern, but I've been through a lot. I can handle it. Go ahead and tell me," she said.
In fact, Grace had some suspicions. But when she saw the photos and heard the recordings, she couldn't help but get angry.
However, it wasn't over yet.
Abigail observed her expression and saw that she just looked a little pale, so she took out the information folder.
Grace took out all the documents from the folder and started flipping through them, page by page.
She kept looking, not saying a word for a long time.
The whole living room was eerily silent, with the servants nervously holding their breaths.
Elaine was also getting anxious. She had no idea what Grace was thinking.
Over the years, she had been trying to make Roman the successor of the White Group.
Elaine orchestrated Roman's engagement with Abigail for that purpose as well.
Because she knew very well where Abigail stood in Grace's heart, she was precise. She knew too well that she never dared let Grace know about what Roman was doing on the side.
Grace was a person with principles and boundaries.
Someone had tried to have a relationship with George back then. The next day, that person disappeared completely from Aramore.
George doted on Grace immensely, so Grace held absolute authority in the White family.
Grace put the documents on the coffee table and said to Elaine, "Have you seen all these things?"
Elaine kept her head down and didn't even dare to breathe.
Grace sneered, "It seems like you knew all along. Where did Roman go? Tell him to come back to me."
Elaine slowly looked up and quietly replied, "Grace, don't be so hasty. Roman didn't do this on purpose. Young people nowadays are all about free love and don't care about engagements at all."
Grace's eyes became sharp as a knife, and she stared straight at Elaine. "Why didn't you think like this when we needed this engagement to secure our status? Who was the one guaranteeing in front of me that he would treat Abigail well?"
Elaine hesitated for a moment, wanting to argue that it was all just kids talking and not real.
But when she saw the murderous look in Grace's eyes, she couldn't say a word.
Seeing how angry Grace was, Abigail quickly tried to calm her down. "Grace, don't be mad. I came here today to break off the engagement. Roman doesn't like me. And I don't like him either."
Grace looked at Abigail in surprise. "Abigail, have you really thought this through? Your mother set this engagement when she was alive. It was her wish."
Abigail smiled and calmly said, "Grace, my mother arranged this engagement for me in the hope that I would be happy. But Roman is not a good man at all. If we really got married, I might be miserable for the rest of my life. My mother wouldn't rest in peace even in her grave."
Thinking of Michelle, Grace couldn't help but feel sad.
She sighed and held Abigail's hand, saying with heartache, "Abigail, I agree to break off the engagement. It's my fault. I used to believe that our families had a good relationship and that you would be happy with Roman. But I overlooked your feelings."
Abigail gently shook her head. "Grace, I know you're doing this for my good."
Unable to hold back, Grace gently rubbed her hair.
She thought, "Abigail is such a good kid. How could that jerk Roman not cherish her?"
In addition to feeling sorry for Abigail, Grace also admired her.
The previous Abigail was obedient but didn't have her thoughts.
Or maybe because she wasn't favored in the Martin family, she had to make herself weak and vulnerable.
But now, there seemed to be an unbreakable stubbornness in Abigail.
Grace praised, "Abigail, you've grown up, and you're starting to resemble your mother more and more. Just now, I saw her shadow in you."
Abigail leaned against her shoulder and smiled, saying, "After all, I am my mother's most precious daughter. Of course, I resemble her!"
Although Grace didn't say it, she felt even more tender towards Abigail.
She believed that this whole situation was the White family's fault, that they didn't raise Roman well.
And as Roman's grandmother, she felt she also had an undeniable responsibility.
