Chapter 383 Pleading
In the DM President's Office, Abigail was managing documents and delegating tasks when a knock came at the door. Lily peeked in, looking conflicted and uncertain.
Abigail looked at her, slightly frowning. "What's the matter?"
Lily slowly opened the door, stepping aside to reveal a tall, slender figure behind her. "Mr. White says he has something urgent to discuss with you. We couldn't stop him."
Abigail's gaze fell on Roman, pausing slightly before saying to Lily, "You go ahead and get busy. Remember to notify the design department to bring me the design drafts I requested."
"Okay, I'll go right away!" With Abigail's instructions, Lily quickly left.
Although she was curious to stay and find out what was happening, work was more important!
Then, Abigail glanced at Roman indifferently and asked in a low voice, "What do you need?"
Abigail's gaze toward Roman was almost emotionless, as if he were a stranger. Past grievances had faded; to her, he was just someone from her past with no future significance.
Roman had expected to see hatred or disgust in her eyes. Instead, there was nothing, which left him feeling slightly uncomfortable.
But he didn't forget his purpose, and in a low voice, he said, "Abigail, I'm here to plead on behalf of my mother."
Abigail raised an eyebrow, somewhat puzzled. "I haven't had any news about your mother for a long time. Why are you coming to me to plead?"
Ever since Abigail had witnessed Elaine being punished, she had forgotten about the matter.
Since then, she had never seen Elaine again.
Roman stood straight in front of the desk, his hands clenched tightly at his sides. "My mother has been imprisoned by my father. I can't find any trace of her. I hope you can help persuade my father. I believe he would listen to you."
As soon as he finished speaking, Abigail suddenly laughed.
He looked up in surprise, meeting a pair of mocking eyes. She said, "Why do you think I would help you? Because you betrayed me, or because of what Elaine did to Michelle?"
Roman was left speechless by her retort, his handsome face full of embarrassment.
After a long silence, he suddenly bent down towards Abigail, his deep voice trembling. "I'm sorry. Abigail, I'm sorry. I apologize for everything my mother and I did to you."
Abigail closed her eyes tightly, and when she opened them again, there was even more coldness in her gaze. "What if I don't accept your apology?"
Roman's lips moved slightly, a trace of desolation in his eyes. "I'm sorry for bothering you."
With that, he turned around in disappointment, ready to leave.
Just as his hand touched the doorknob, Abigail's clear voice suddenly rang out from behind him, "I will call Stephen, but not for you, and I won't forgive her on behalf of my mother."
Elaine had suffered enough. Michelle was still alive. She hoped this would mark the end of all past grievances.
Roman's eyes instantly brightened, his chest filled with excitement, and even his voice rose a few pitches. "Really? Thank you, really, thank you."
As he spoke, Roman's eyes gradually turned red, and even tears began to glisten.
After Roman left, Abigail leaned back in her office chair, her slender fingers tapping lightly on the desk, lost in thought.
The large office was very quiet, and after a long time, a sigh gradually escaped.
Abigail picked up her phone and found Stephen's number in her contacts.
The phone rang only twice before it was answered, and Stephen's slightly hoarse voice came through. "Abigail, why are you calling me suddenly? Is something wrong?"
"No, Roman came to see me today."
Stephen fell silent, his tone becoming tense and urgent. "Did he cause you trouble again? I'll call him back right now and give him a good scolding."
"No," Abigail explained softly. "He came to plead for Elaine, and I agreed."
Stephen tightened his grip on the phone, leaning back in the lounge chair on the villa's balcony, his expression vacant. If Abigail were there, she would see that the once gentle, well-groomed man was now gaunt and graying, looking as if he had aged ten years.
Stephen slowly sat up from the lounge chair, his voice cautious. "Abigail, you don't have to go out of your way for Roman. Our family owes you too much, and we can never repay it in this lifetime. I will spend the rest of my life atoning for it. I will personally keep an eye on Elaine and won't let her have another chance to hurt you."
Abigail pressed her lips together, not knowing what to feel. "Stephen, Elaine has already been punished. Let's put the past grievances behind us. I don't want to dwell on the past, and neither should you."
Stephen should have had a happy and fulfilling life, but now he was held back by Elaine.
Abigail's advice hit Stephen with a wave of sadness. How could it end this way? The past wounds were irreparable, and Michelle would never come back.
"Abigail, you don't need to worry about this. I know you have a kind heart, but we owe you, and we must repay it."
Abigail didn't expect him to be so stubborn and shook her head helplessly. "Stephen, you've already repaid what you owed. The reason I agreed not to pursue it further is that I hope you can look forward and not dwell on the past."
After a pause, she added, "If you can't pull yourself together, not only I but also Gregory and Mom will be worried about you. Have you thought about them?"
Stephen opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Abigail sighed. "Think it over carefully."
With that, she hung up. Stephen stared at the phone, lost in thought. He remained outside until nightfall, then slowly rose and walked back to the villa.
Stephen entered the dark basement and turned on the light. A thin figure in the corner shrank back. It was Elaine, her face obscured by messy hair. Stephen approached her slowly.
Elaine crawled over with difficulty, her dirty hands clutching his pants, pleading in a low voice, "Let me out, please."
