Chapter 402 Becoming Mute

Michelle enjoyed the meal immensely, and Caius's expression also relaxed.

After dinner, Abigail took Michelle for a walk outside. The restaurant was designed like a garden, with elegant pavilions and terraces.

Outside, there were also lush trees, forest paths, and a clear lake, making the scenery very pleasant.

As they walked, Abigail chatted with her about recent events.

Inside the restaurant, Caius was sitting on the sofa sipping tea, while Gregory sat to the side, silent and lost in thought.

Caius lifted his eyes to look at him. "It's obvious that Abigail really likes you."

"Yes, I love Abigail very much too." Mentioning Abigail, Gregory's expression softened, revealing an uncontrollable tenderness.

Caius said, "I missed Abigail's growth and have no right to interfere in her feelings, but let me make this clear: if you ever betray Abigail, I won't be easy to deal with."

His voice was icily stern, enough to terrify most, yet Gregory met his gaze with calm composure, devoid of guilt or panic.

"I will never betray Abigail." This was a certainty and a promise.

Their eyes met in a silent standoff.

Eventually, Caius was the first to look away, saying, "I'll believe you for now."

"Since you have so much free time, why not pay more attention to Mom?" Gregory's lips curved slightly, his eyes meaningful.

Caius was slightly taken aback. "What are you trying to say?"

Gregory replied, "David is in Aramore. If he finds out Mom is here, who knows what he might do."

Caius sneered, a dark glint flashing in his eyes. "I'll handle this. You young people are always so cautious. If it were me, David would have paid a heavy price for what he did to Abigail."

Gregory pondered how meeting Abigail had softened him. Previously ruthless, he now viewed his former tactics as overly aggressive and counterproductive.

He couldn't risk Abigail's life.

Gregory couldn't remember the last time his hands had been stained with blood. "So what do you plan to do?"

Caius's eyes narrowed slightly, his expression cold. "Of course, make sure he never has the chance to speak again."

Gregory raised an eyebrow slightly, as if he had guessed something, and smiled faintly.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, David used his last penny to bribe a nurse for a new phone, a wave of regret washing over him as he realized his savings were gone.

But the thought of using Michelle to threaten Caius lifted his spirits.

As soon as he got the phone, he eagerly turned it on to call Jessica, but before he could dial, the door to his room suddenly opened.

Several men in black suits walked in, their faces cold and eyes sharp, clearly well-trained.

"Who are you? What do you want?"

The men in black stepped forward and covered David's mouth with a handkerchief without a word.

David struggled, but a pungent smell filled his nose, and he quickly felt dizzy and passed out.

When he awoke with a throbbing head, memories resurfaced—he had seen a group of men in black before losing consciousness.

He thought, 'Right! The men in black! They must have come to kill me!'

David sat up in bed in terror, opening his mouth to call for a nurse.

However, when he tried to speak, only silence greeted him. Stunned, David realized he was mute. How could this be? Why was this happening?

David frantically pressed the call button, and when the nurse arrived, he pointed anxiously at his throat, but could only make a short sound.

The nurse looked puzzled. "Mr. Martin, what trick are you playing today? If you keep this up, we'll have to notify the prison."

David waved his hands wildly, indicating they should check his throat.

After a while, the nurse finally realized David was serious; his throat really had a problem.

After an examination, the doctor said, "Mr. Martin, have you eaten anything unusual or done anything to harm your vocal cords recently? Your vocal cords seem to have suddenly failed."

This shocked David.

David pleaded with the doctor to cure him.

The doctor sighed. "Mr. Martin, I want to help, but you still owe the hospital. Pay that off first."

If David were an elderly man or had no family, the doctor might have helped him apply for assistance.

But David had a wife and children and was only in his fifties, with all his limbs intact.

After the doctor left, David sat in a daze and messaged Jessica for money. Days passed with no response. He reached out to Kayla and Susan, but was met with silence. David was desperate.

Abigail heard about David losing his voice three days later.

She looked at Gregory in surprise. "How did he suddenly lose his voice? Did Caius do something?"

Gregory nodded. "I believe this is just the beginning."

Knowing Caius's character, even if he didn't kill David, he would make sure David suffered.

Sure enough, the next day they heard that David's right arm had mysteriously broken, just the night he tried to write with pen and paper.

It was clear someone didn't want him to speak.

David lay in bed in pain, groaning in agony.

Who was doing this to him?

If he found out, he would never let the culprit go!

As he was thinking this, the door to his room suddenly opened again.

David reflexively turned his head, and when he saw who it was, his pupils contracted sharply.

"Caius? What are you doing here? What do you want? Don't come any closer!"
