Chapter 459 Michelle is More Important than Caius
Caius hung his head low, not saying a word, his face heavy with an indescribable gravity.
Gregory stood quietly, gently taking Abigail's hand to pass warmth to her.
Noticing his small gesture, Abigail turned her head to look at him, smiling and shaking her head lightly, indicating she was fine.
In fact, she didn't care much about her identity and had long accepted the fact that she couldn't be publicly acknowledged by her biological parents.
But seeing Caius's hesitation still made her heart ache a bit.
At that moment, Caius suddenly stood up, walked over to Abigail, and said word by word, "Abigail, I'm sorry for the grievances you've suffered during this time. I'll handle it."
He already owed Abigail too much and couldn't let this continue. At only in her twenties, she had a long life ahead and couldn't be burdened by the label of "illegitimate child."
Caius closed his eyes tightly and made a difficult decision. "Rest assured, I'll repay everything I owe you."
"Dad!" Abigail's eyes welled up with tears.
Just as Caius was about to find Michelle, there was a commotion. The door opened, and Michelle stood at the entrance, her eyes full of shock, unsure of how much she had heard.
Abigail and Caius exchanged a glance, both startled.
"Michelle!"
"Mom!"
Michelle walked in, her already slender figure looking even more frail and thin.
She couldn't believe what she had just heard, her tone carrying a hint of uncertainty. "What were you talking about just now? What are you planning to confess to me? What are you hiding from me?"
Caius's face turned pale instantly, and he stood still, the usually calm and composed man now looking somewhat at a loss.
Abigail was the first to recover, walking to Michelle's side and softly coaxing, "Nothing, Mom, you misheard. We were just chatting casually."
Michelle scrutinized Abigail's face, so much like her own, as if trying to discern something.
Abigail felt uncomfortable under her stare, her brows slightly furrowing. "What's wrong, Mom?"
Michelle shook her head, a faint, ambiguous smile appearing on her lips. "People have always said you look a lot like me. Looking closely, it's true."
Abigail's heart tightened suddenly. Did Michelle know something?
The next second, Michelle shifted her gaze to Caius. "Don't you have anything to say to me?"
Caius didn't know how much Michelle had found out and didn't dare to speak rashly.
He took two steps forward, trying to take Michelle's hand. "Michelle, listen to me, it's not what you think."
However, this time Michelle directly avoided him.
She took out her phone, opened a certain webpage, and handed it to Caius. "Tell me, is this true?"
Caius looked down, his pupils suddenly contracting.
Hadn't he already had these messages blocked?
Why were they suddenly exposed?
Who could it be?
Seeing him not speak, Michelle's suspicions were immediately confirmed. "So, everything said online is true, right?"
So, she had been married before, lived in Aramore for years, and she and Caius were not childhood sweethearts; even Abigail was a child with another man.
Caius said, "Michelle, listen to my explanation. It's not what you think. Abigail is our child. I can guarantee that."
Things had already reached this point, and there was no need to continue hiding the truth.
Caius gritted his teeth and told the whole story of what happened back then.
As he spoke, he didn't forget to observe Michelle's changing expressions. Seeing her face darken, Caius's heart tightened as well. "Michelle, I know I shouldn't have kept it from you, but I had no choice at the time. You were being tormented by David, and the cancer was real. I was afraid that if you continued, you would die at his hands, so I took it upon myself to give you a drug that made you appear dead."
Michelle's face turned as white as a sheet, her breathing becoming rapid, as if she was struggling to control her surging emotions.
Caius had never seen Michelle like this before and was immediately frightened. "Michelle, you can hit me or scold me, but please don't ignore me. I know I was wrong."
Michelle's eyes were red, filled with disbelief. "Caius, you say you know you were wrong. What exactly were you wrong about?"
Caius pressed his lips together, speaking softly, "I shouldn't have deceived you. I shouldn't have taken you to my side without your consent."
Michelle shook her head, a bitter smile forming on her lips. "You don't know. There's no need for us to continue this conversation. Abigail, pack your things. We're going back to Aramore."
Abigail hesitated, glanced at Caius, then nodded and obediently agreed. "Okay."
In her heart, Michelle was paramount; Caius was merely incidental. After all, his mistake warranted Michelle's retribution. Before leaving, Abigail cast a sympathetic glance at Caius, then took Gregory's hand and departed.
