Chapter 30 No Money to Pay
"Exactly; otherwise, how could Abigail have fallen for you?" The anger that Grace had just suppressed surged up again, and her eyes became sharp.
Gregory once again showed a helpless expression and reminded her, "Mom, I'm not that awful, am I?"
"Don't try to sweet-talk me. If you dare disappoint Abigail like Roman did, I won't be your mother anymore!"
Grace had watched Abigail grow up, so she had always treated her like a granddaughter. She never expected that Abigail would coincidentally become her son's wife.
She couldn't quite describe how she felt at the moment, but she wasn't someone who didn't understand reason. Besides, this was not Abigail's fault to begin with.
So, she quickly figured it out and accepted it.
Gregory straightened his back and solemnly promised, "Mom, I will treat Abigail well."
Gregory had always believed that Abigail was his wife.
Although she unexpectedly got engaged to someone else before, she still belonged to him, and no one could take her away.
In the living room downstairs, Elaine sat on the couch, dumbfounded and unbelieving.
After a long while, she finally snapped out of it and started cursing at Abigail, "You promiscuous little slut, how dare you shamelessly seduce Gregory and now slander Roman!"
Abigail lifted her gaze and saw Elaine angrily standing up and swinging a slap towards her.
She knew she couldn't avoid Elaine, so she quickly sidestepped.
Elaine's hand came down, just grazing Abigail's cheek, not hitting her directly.
Elaine, even angrier that she missed, yelled, "You little slut, how dare you dodge! I'm going to tear your mouth apart!"
"That's enough! Why can Roman cheat, but I can't marry someone else? You have double standards," Abigail immediately stood up, took two steps back, and emphasized her words.
As soon as Elaine heard her words, her mind buzzed and went blank.
She covered her heaving chest and pointed at Abigail, "Don't make excuses for yourself. I know you've been interested in Gregory for a long time, wanting to abandon Roman and intentionally frame him!"
Abigail sneered and pointed to the folder beside her, "Is that so? You're really confident. Did I force Roman to sleep with other women?"
"You!"
Elaine couldn't argue back, and anger clogged her chest, making her extremely uncomfortable.
Although she came from a humble background, she had never experienced such grievances since marrying into the White family. She immediately raised her hand to slap Abigail again.
But before her hand could come down, it was forcefully grabbed.
"Ah!" Elaine exclaimed in pain. The pain contorted her carefully applied makeup.
She turned her head, wanting to see who dared to stop her, but the next second, she froze.
"Grace? Why did you come down so quickly?"
Grace forcefully threw Elaine's wrist aside and coldly snorted, "If I didn't come down, wouldn't Abigail continue to be bullied by you?"
Elaine covered her almost broken wrist, tears streaming down her face, "Grace, you're biased. The engagement between Abigail and Roman hasn't been broken off yet. Why is it wrong for Roman to sleep with other women, but she can marry someone else?"
Grace gave her a cold, sharp look, her gaze icy.
Elaine met her gaze and immediately flinched, lowering her head, afraid to make eye contact.
But the anger in her heart couldn't dissipate, like a heavy stone blocking her chest, causing extreme discomfort.
Grace noticed the resentment and bitterness in Elaine's eyes and withdrew her gaze faintly.
First, she walked up to Abigail, checking if she was injured before looking back at Elaine.
"Roman betrayed Abigail first. I promised Abigail's mother that if Roman ever betrayed her, their engagement could be immediately nullified. So, it's reasonable for Abigail to marry someone else."
Abigail looked up in surprise, feeling complicated.
It turned out Michelle had already planned an escape route for her.
She must have been deeply hurt by David back then, which made her so cautious about her marriage.
Gregory stood by Abigail's side and said to Elaine, "Elaine, now that everyone knows about Roman's infidelity toward Abigail, many people are privately criticizing our family's reputation. Shouldn't you take responsibility for this?"
"Why should I? It's because Abigail can't control Roman."
"That's enough!" Elaine wanted to defend herself but was sternly interrupted by Gregory. "Over these years, Roman has been using my card and my money to maintain mistresses, tarnishing our family's name. I've frozen all his cards, and I don't think you should have a problem with that."
Elaine froze.
Since Gregory gave Roman a supplementary card, almost all of their household expenses relied on that card.
Her husband, Stephen White, was incapable. Despite his dividend, more was needed to cover their expenses.
Elaine's heart broke at the thought of not being able to buy designer handbags, jewelry, and couture dresses anymore.
But under Gregory's cold gaze, she didn't dare to refuse.
Elaine looked towards Grace, hoping she could speak up for her.
But Grace didn't even glance at her. All her attention was focused on Abigail.
"Abigail, in fact, this engagement was only a verbal agreement. I now officially declare it null and void, and you can live a good life with Gregory in the future."
Abigail looked at Gregory, and coincidentally, Gregory was also looking at her.
Their gazes met in the air as if something had changed.
For some reason, Abigail inexplicably felt her cheeks heating up, so she quickly shifted her gaze away.
"It's almost dinner time. Why don't you all stay and have a meal with me? I'll have someone clean up Gregory's room so you can stay the night here," Grace said, holding Abigail's hand and calling Andy in.
Andy, upon hearing the news of Abigail and Gregory's marriage, was also stunned for a while. But he quickly snapped out of it and smiled, "Sure, I'll instruct them to prepare."
"No need. After dinner, I'll take Abigail home," Gregory interrupted, gently touching Abigail's shoulder and stopping Andy in his tracks.
Andy looked to Grace for confirmation, and she shook her head. "No need to go. They're newlyweds and probably want some alone time rather than staying here with me."
Andy's smile deepened on his face. "Congratulations, Mrs. Grace White. You'll probably have a grandchild soon."
Abigail's cheeks blushed uncontrollably again.
But Grace teased her, "Abigail, are you shy? Getting married and having children is only natural. You don't have to be shy. If Gregory dares to mistreat you, come to me. I'll have your back."
"Thank you, Mrs. Grace White."
"Good girl, don't call me Mrs. Grace White. Just call me Grace," Grace said, ruffling Abigail's hair and glinting her eyes with a playful glint.
Abigail shyly called out, "Grace."
