Chapter 136 Battle for Identity

Given the current situation, whether she drove Megan away or left on her own, it was not going to be easy to handle.

Why would she want to stay in this villa and humiliate herself? It was just that she didn't dare to go against Sebastian's immense pressure.

Thinking about this, Brooklyn smiled faintly. Her reaction was more like fatigue. "Me? Whatever. Right now, I just want the selection process to go smoothly. People often say that if you lose in love, you'll win in your career. I hope that's true."

Zach smiled with relaxed brows. "I didn't expect you to take it so well. Most women would probably break down in this situation. Your nonchalance surprises me."

Brooklyn had already stood up from the chair. "No need for compliments. I really appreciate you for helping me revise my paper. I'll be leaving now."

Zach immediately stood up as well. "Since you're on vacation now, how about having lunch together?"

Lunch? Given her current state, she had no mood to dine with him. "Maybe another day. No need to see me out, Mr. Carter. I can leave on my own."

Just as Zach was about to step out, her words made him pause. In the end, he still voiced what was on the tip of his tongue, "Dr. Mitchell, I hope you won't call me Mr. Carter anymore in the future."

He wanted to hear her call his name, even if it was just his full name.

Brooklyn adjusted the black shoulder bag on her shoulder and said with a radiant smile. "I'm looking forward to the day you get promoted, Mr. Carter."

She knew that wasn't what he meant.

However, why would she follow his lead?

To Brooklyn's surprise, in the days following Megan's move into the villa, Sebastian didn't come back even once. She had no idea what he was up to.

Every morning, Megan would get up on time, lay out her yoga mat in the large living room on the first floor, and play soothing piano music at full volume, making it impossible for anyone to have peace in the vast villa.

Brooklyn was writing her paper day and night, sleeping very late at night, and couldn't get a good rest in the morning.

"Is it necessary to make such a big deal out of doing yoga? Playing music so loud in the morning, how is anyone supposed to rest?"

Finally, she couldn't take it anymore. She threw off the covers, put on her slippers, and walked to the living room. She lived on the first floor, and after walking down the long hallway, she saw Megan in a crop-top workout outfit, contorting her legs into an extremely flexible position.

Celebrity bodies were more or less the same; Brooklyn had to admit it was quite good.

Megan sneered, "You're the only one still sleeping in so late. But soon, you'll be an outsider."

Brooklyn, sleep-deprived and groggy, rubbed her temples. "Megan, do you find this fun? Sebastian and I are not getting a divorce. At best, you're just a bird kept in a gilded cage by him."

Megan switched positions, clasped her hands together, and took a deep breath. "That's still better than you. You're just relying on a piece of paper to bind him!"

Brooklyn was about to retort when Isabella, smiling warmly, said, "Mrs. Kingsley, you didn't sleep well last night. I made some soup to help you relax. Please try it."

Isabella was trying to ease the tension, and Brooklyn felt very touched.

Megan stood up and asked, "Isabella, what did you just call her? Mrs. Brooklyn Kingsley?! Please call her by her name from now on! I should be called Mrs. Megan Kingsley because I'm carrying the future heir of the Kingsley family!"

Isabella neither agreed nor refused directly. Having served the Kingsley family for many years, she was well aware of the nature of power struggles in wealthy families. An incident that happened in the Kingsley family twenty years ago was still fresh in her mind. So, she smiled politely and said, "Ms. Turner, I won't make a mistake. I address everyone according to their respective identities. Even if Mrs. Jennifer Kingsley were here, I would still address her the same way."

Megan gritted her teeth. Once she married Sebastian, she would definitely drive all these annoying people out of the Kingsley family!

Brooklyn, sitting in the dining room, smiled slightly. "Thank you, Isabella."

It was rare; Brooklyn, usually not very talkative and seldom smiling, smiled today, and she looked beautiful when she did.

"It's my duty, Mrs. Brooklyn Kingsley. Take your time with the soup."

Megan picked up the bowl of soup and smashed it on the ground. The bowl shattered into pieces, and the soup splattered all over the floor, making a large wet patch.

"Brooklyn, I warn you to recognize your situation. This is just the beginning!" Megan spat and crossed her arms triumphantly, thinking she had the upper hand in this battle for identity.

Brooklyn remained indifferent. "Madison, come clean this up."

The end of the month arrived in no time.

At the end of the month, summer officially began. Spring had passed, and the garden was lush and verdant. The only regret was that, despite the many varieties of rare plants in the garden, there wasn't a single gardenia.

Brooklyn's paper had been revised three or four times and was finally successfully published.

At the same time, her arm had healed, so she informed the hospital that she was ending her vacation and returning to work.

As for Sebastian, there had been no news from him.

He hadn't even called or texted her.

This wasn't surprising. Sebastian had ignored and neglected Brooklyn for three years. Although his attitude had briefly changed due to some events, it couldn't alter the long-term stable relationship they had formed.

He didn't care about her, wasn't concerned about her, and certainly wouldn't tell her his whereabouts.

Brooklyn didn't expect to be greeted by long-silent scolding and rumors when she returned to the hospital to resume work.
