Chapter 404 I Don't Miss Her Anymore, I Only Want You
MBK Group, Chairman's Office.
Brian flipped through the letter in his hand, taking deep breaths from time to time. "Wedding announcement?"
Yancy stood with his hands clasped in front of him, bowing slightly. "Mr. Brian, isn't Kevin too arrogant? Last time he directly called you to ask for Scarlett to return to Averlake, and now he's sending a wedding announcement. Isn't it obvious he wants Scarlett back in Averlake?"
Brian chuckled lightly. "Just because he wants it, I'll give it to him? That ignorant Kevin! Contact Scarlett immediately and have her come here."
"Mr. Brian, Scarlett injured her arm and is currently resting at Mr. Sebastian's villa. Should I have someone bring her back?"
"Scarlett is hurt?"
"Yes, and at the hospital, they somehow managed to get Zach back. Zach is currently performing surgery. If Zach can stay at the hospital, it would be a great asset." Yancy replied.
Brian snorted disdainfully, flicking the letter before crumpling it into a ball and tossing it into the wastebasket at his feet. "Zach?"
He pondered the name for a moment before saying, "Have Sebastian come up."
Sebastian had just finished a meeting and was on his way back to his office when he received the call to come upstairs.
"Dad, what's up?" Sebastian sat across from Brian, his long legs crossed, his demeanor as usual, even more relaxed than usual, almost as if he was tired of talking with Brian.
Brian asked, "Is your illness better?"
Sebastian couldn't help but laugh. "Since when did Dad start caring about my health?"
Brian snorted heavily, scrutinizing Sebastian. "Your personal doctor probably can't stay by your side as your private physician anymore. Her fiancé has already sent a wedding announcement, they're getting married at the end of the month."
Sebastian didn't know this, but his reaction wasn't the shock or panic Brian had expected. He merely responded with a faint "Oh," and then said, "Is that all, Dad?"
Since Brooklyn's death, Sebastian's attitude towards him had changed significantly. Even sitting here and talking to him face-to-face was already giving him a lot of respect.
"So, you don't care whether Scarlett stays or goes?" Brian probed.
Sebastian suddenly laughed, a confident and arrogant laugh. "Dad, you seem to care more than I do? If I'm not mistaken, you deliberately set a trap and initiated the heart rescue project just to keep her. Now that she's leaving, the one who can't bear it the most is you."
Brian snorted coldly!
Sebastian continued, "Moreover, the heart rescue project was just a facade. You spent twenty million dollars to buy Aucester Hospital's good reputation and to cover up the scandal in the engineering department. In case the truth comes out, the two will offset each other, protecting the reputation of MBK Group. Am I right?"
Brian's face suddenly changed dramatically. He had plotted everything, but he hadn't expected Sebastian to know it all!
"I investigated the engineering department's accident. It was because you suddenly changed the blueprints, causing the load-bearing columns at the base to become unbalanced. According to predictions, it can only support for another month at most." Sebastian added.
The veins on the back of Brian's hand bulged under his skin!
Sebastian's words were like a knife!
However, Sebastian wasn't finished. "And, you made Scarlett famous, turning her into a household name as a savior, then had her endorse the project, making it widely known. When the building collapses, Scarlett will inevitably become the focal point, and all the blame will be directed at her."
Sebastian's voice grew deeper, his eyes probing Brian's, his lips curling into a smile. "No matter which plan, Scarlett is just a pawn to you. You want to destroy her to silence the public, isn't that right?"
As he said the last sentence, Sebastian slammed his palm on the table and then stood up abruptly, his eyes blazing like torches as he looked at Brian, his smile unfathomable. "But you miscalculated one step."
Brian's eyes were bloodshot, as if he were under an X-ray, all his secrets laid bare. "What?"
Sebastian smiled, ready to confront him head-on. "I will marry Scarlett."
"What did you say?" Brian suddenly stood up, incredulously questioning. They locked eyes, the tension palpable.
Sebastian patiently repeated, "I want to marry Scarlett. As for the wedding announcement you mentioned, let it go back the way it came."
With that, he turned and left, slamming the door behind him.
He knew Brian's plan. Initially, he turned a blind eye, having plotted everything. No matter what, he would protect Scarlett. But now that he had confronted Brian, he felt more at ease.
Aucester Hospital
"Congratulations! Dr. Carter! You've created a miracle!"
The surgery was successful, and the patient was wheeled out of the operating room. Zach removed his mask and smiled at everyone on the team. "Everyone worked hard. Tonight, you can eat at any restaurant you like, and the bill is on me."
"Wow! Dr. Carter, you're so generous!"
As the crowd dispersed, Zach changed his clothes and walked out of the locker room. As soon as he stepped out, he saw a familiar figure, a beautiful dress, shoulder-length hair, and the scent of freshly sprayed perfume.
"Dr. Rivera?" He called out.Piper handed him one of the two cups of coffee. "Didn't expect to see me here, did you?"
Zach thanked her but didn't rush to drink. "I really didn't. After the incident at Aucester Hospital, I thought you had gone abroad."
Hearing Zach's voice, Piper's heart and hands trembled, her smile almost uncontrollable. "I believed you would come back, so I waited here for you."
An unnatural smile crossed Zach's gentle face as he deliberately avoided the sensitive topic. "It's getting late. Why hasn't NI1 clocked out yet?"
"Can I walk with you?" Piper asked.
After more than two years, there was still a vast distance between them. She couldn't get close to him.
Zach furrowed his brows but nodded good-naturedly. "Sure."
Piper recounted many events from the past two years to Zach, and he realized that everything had changed. "Time flies."
As they walked, they reached the hospital's plaza, surrounded by lights and small flower beds.
Piper said, "You and Sebastian became enemies because of Brooklyn, but now that Brooklyn has been dead for over two years, shouldn't you be able to become friends with him?"
Zach shook his paper cup. "Probably not."
The coffee in the paper cup gradually cooled, and the bitter coffee became even more bitter, numbing his tongue. Zach suddenly thought of something that had puzzled him for two years but had never asked. "Dr. Rivera, there's something I want to ask you. Please be honest."
Piper thought he was going to ask about their relationship and quickly nodded with a smile. "Sure!"
Under the lights, Zach's gaze suddenly turned sharp, rational, and profound. "When the earthquake happened in Jabari, Sebastian went to see Brooklyn. You told me the plane would arrive in half an hour, but in reality, Sebastian arrived half an hour late. During that half-hour gap, Brooklyn had an accident. Tell me honestly, was it unintentional or deliberate?"
Piper's fingers hastily gripped the paper cup, almost crushing it in her grasp. Her heart suddenly began to race, and her expression wavered under the light. "The weather was terrible that night, and the exact flying time was uncertain. The information I received was only an approximate time—how could it be specific to the minute?"
Zach's eyes darkened, unsure if he felt disappointed or relieved. To be honest, he didn't want to doubt her. Being alive was already a blessing, he shouldn't add more burdens to his life.
"It's late. I'm heading back."
"Zach." As he turned to leave, Piper called out to him, walked up behind him, and tugged at his sleeve. "It's been over two years. Even Sebastian is engaged to Megan. Haven't you thought about starting your own life?"
Zach sighed softly, his voice regaining its elegance and becoming even more distant. "Dr. Rivera, I should be the one telling you this. Don't hold on to me anymore. There's no possibility between us."
Not giving Piper a chance to hold him back, Zach strode out of the plaza.
In Sebastian's villa
"Sebastian, what are you doing now?" Scarlett was puzzled.
"Cleaning out the trash at home to keep the air fresh." Sebastian was pulling out roses from the vase one by one, tossing them into the trash without any care. In no time, the living room was clean!
He finally felt comfortable.
Then, Sebastian patiently arranged the imported camellias in a vase. The white camellias, with their fresh color and subtle fragrance, offered a pleasing contrast to the opulence of the roses and better suited the overall decor of the house.
Scarlett held her forehead. "Sebastian, you're not just sick in the heart, your brain is sick too! You have intermittent psychosis!"
Sebastian could fully accept her sarcasm, and he accepted it particularly comfortably. "I only know you're a cardiology expert. When did you minor in neurology?"
Scarlett was so angry her blood was boiling. Damn it, could Sebastian be any weirder?
"Sebastian, throwing away the flowers won't help. Kevin and I are getting married at Emporcia at the end of the month."
Sebastian held a budding white camellia to her nose. "Does it smell good?"
Scarlett took a deep breath in anger, and as she inhaled, the camellia's fragrance filled her lungs, making her heart flutter!
She had never paid attention to this uncommon and unsellable flower. She never expected it to smell so good, elegant, and melodious, like the sound of a violin.
"I said, I'm getting married at the end of the month!"
Sebastian's long fingers patiently arranged the flower stems like a florist. "I know. You don't have to shout. Although you've diagnosed me with heart and brain problems, fortunately, my ears are fine. But isn't it still more than ten days until the end of the month? For now, you're still unmarried."
Scarlett didn't know what Sebastian was thinking, but she had delivered the message. "Take care of your health. If you don't want to have an episode, it's best to reduce memories of your ex-wife and everything related to her."
Sebastian finally finished, but there was one flower left.
He looked at the vase, unable to fit another flower, so he broke the stem and placed the delicate flower behind Scarlett's ear. "Okay, I'll listen to you. From now on, I won't think about Brooklyn. I'll only think about you."
