Chapter 302 Brooklyn Humiliated
Jennifer went ballistic, swinging her hand to smack Brooklyn like she was aiming to knock her out cold.
Seeing the whole thing going down and knew it would only get worse, Quinn, without a second of thought, spun around and took the hit for Brooklyn, catching Jennifer's slap right on his back.
Lucky for him, it landed on his back. If it had hit Brooklyn, or even his own face, they'd be sporting some serious bruises.
Brooklyn's eyes widened in shock, seeing Quinn pulling a face. She felt a mix of guilt and anger. "Quinn, are you out of your mind?"
"If I didn't step in, your face would be toast," Quinn shot back.
Jennifer was fuming, ready to take out her rage on Brooklyn, but Quinn's interference only made her madder. "Quinn, get lost! I wanna beat this bitch to a pulp!"
Jennifer raised her hand to strike again, but Brooklyn wriggled free from Quinn's hold. She wasn't about to dodge it; she was ready to face it head-on.
Shoving Quinn aside, she stood right in front of Jennifer. She looked worn out, but her voice was steady and polite. "Jennifer, I get that you're worried about Sebastian and feeling awful. If hitting me makes you feel better, go ahead."
Jennifer scoffed, "You think you have a point? Where were you last night? YWhy didn't you stay at the hospital?"
It all boiled down to Brooklyn leaving the hospital early. No matter her reasons, she couldn't explain it away now.
Brooklyn stopped trying to explain. "I left early because I had something to handle. That's on me. But are you really gonna blame me for everything that happened after?"
Jennifer found herself stuck, her anger choking her. She thought, 'I hate Brooklyn; everything she does is wrong. I'm just looking for a reason to blame her.'
Just then, Megan sauntered over, linking arms with Jennifer. "Mrs. Kingsley, don't get worked up. You know what she's like. Getting mad at her will only hurt you."
'What kind of person am I?' Brooklyn thought bitterly. 'Jennifer probably hears from Megan that I'm the worst.'
Jennifer glared at Brooklyn, snorting, "It's a real mystery why the Kingsley family keeps having such rotten luck."
Megan, still clutching Jennifer's arm, shot Brooklyn a look. "Last night, Sebastian was chilling in my room, then he just up and left. I thought he had something urgent, but turns out you bailed from the hospital. Brooklyn, what are you trying to do to him? Haven't you messed him up enough for these three years? Just let him go, will you?"
Brooklyn sneered, "Megan, I'm his wife. If anyone needs to let go, it's you."
She knew she wasn't getting out of this clean, but she wasn't about to let them drag her name through the mud.
Jennifer glared daggers at her. "Shut up! I don't wanna hear another word from you."
Lawrence and Karen looked at Brooklyn with pure disdain. To them, she was nothing but trouble, a stain on their family name.
Quinn frowned, lowering his voice. "Brooklyn, you're better than them. Stay cool."
Brooklyn didn't have the stomach to be mad. Her eyes felt dry, and her throat tasted like blood. "How's Sebastian?"
"The doc said his heart's messed up. I don't know the details, but Dr. Carter's in there, so it should be okay," Quinn replied.
Brooklyn nodded, stepping back from Jennifer and the others, her eyes fixed on the operating room. The surgery had been going on for over six hours.
Megan glanced at Quinn, feigning concern. "Quinn, Jennifer's here. Aren't you coming over?"
It was clear she wanted to isolate Brooklyn.
Karen chimed in, "Quinn, come over here."
Quinn smirked, thinking, 'Yeah, right. I'm not taking orders from anyone!'
"I like it here; the air's better," he said.
Quinn was young, so a bit of defiance wasn't unusual. Mainly, he didn't want to see Brooklyn humiliated, feeling a mix of emotions.
In the hallway, the divide was clear. Brooklyn had almost no standing in the Kingsley family.
Jennifer glanced over, snorting, "Birds of a feather flock together!"
Her voice wasn't loud, but everyone heard it.
Quinn's face flushed with embarrassment. Brooklyn looked up, apologetic. "Sorry for dragging you into this."
"It's cool. I'm used to it," Quinn said.
Suddenly, Brooklyn noticed something different about Quinn, a maturity that didn't match his age, like he was carrying hidden burdens and pains he never showed.
