Chapter 40 Welcome Party
An array of desserts and beverages adorned the terrace, yet the crowd was sparse. The evening breeze tenderly tousled Brooklyn's hair, providing a modicum of relief to her troubled heart.
Brooklyn, lost in her thoughts, held a tray and nibbled on a dessert. The taste in her mouth was indistinguishable, a blend of sweet and bitter.
Loneliness, she mused, was a solitary person's carnival, and a carnival was a multitude's solitude. The paradox rang true. She had hoped that immersing herself in the cacophony of a party would help her escape her solitude. Yet, no matter how loud the music blared or how wildly the crowd danced, her anxiety remained unassuaged.
She yearned for him. His absence was as pervasive as the air she breathed, infiltrating every nerve. She found herself wondering, 'Where is he? Is he at another woman's house, or perhaps in Megan's arms?'
As Brooklyn was lost in her thoughts, her phone buzzed. Seeing Megan's name flash on the screen, she furrowed her brows, puzzled. 'Why would Megan be calling me?'
"What's the matter?" Brooklyn asked, her voice devoid of emotion.
Seated on a plush fabric sofa, Megan exuded the smugness of a victor. The faint music from the phone prompted a derisive snort. "Brooklyn, are you at a bar? Are you so lonely that you can't sleep? If you're feeling lonely, why not find a handsome young man to keep you company? Your marriage to Sebastian has lost all meaning, you won't find happiness there. I truly pity you."
Megan's words, dripping with sarcasm, were like a barrage of knives, each one piercing Brooklyn's heart. She wasn't strong enough to brush off Megan's taunts, and she felt a surge of tears welling up. But she wasn't sure if it was out of a sense of injustice or anger.
"There's a woman who carries a man's child but can't marry him because he's another woman's husband. She tries to keep him close, but he remains distant. How does a single mother feel? Who truly deserves sympathy?"
Brooklyn held her glass of alcohol, the clear liquid reflecting in her eyes. The lights were so bright that she thought she was shedding tears.
Cry? Who was worthy of her tears?
"Brooklyn, don't try to provoke me with your words. Let's just wait and see. Sebastian will be with me tonight. He'll be with me every night from now on. You can continue crying in your empty house. And by the way, you should divorce Sebastian and leave the Kingsley family as soon as possible. You're still young, maybe someone will accept you as their girlfriend. If you continue to waste time, you'll age and no one will want you..."
*Click!*
Brooklyn, no longer able to tolerate Megan's taunts, abruptly ended the call.
She tilted her head back and downed the contents of her glass in one gulp. The alcohol churned in her stomach, blurring her vision. 'Tonight... every night... Damn it! I only had one glass, why am I feeling drunk?'
She touched her forehead, grabbed the glass, and took a large sip...
*Splutter!*
It was Baijiu.
The potent liquor instantly numbed Brooklyn's tongue. As soon as the Baijiu hit her palate, she spat it out, most of it splashing onto the man opposite her.
