Chapter 303 Don't Leave, Brooklyn
Seven hours crawled by, and finally, the light outside the operating room flicked off.
Brooklyn bolted forward, but before she could reach the door, Jennifer and the crew blocked her. Someone's arm swatted into her hard, almost knocking her over. She stumbled right into Quinn's arms, smacking the back of her head against him.
Sebastian, hooked up to an oxygen mask, got wheeled out, looking so pale and beat that he was almost unrecognizable. His once-handsome face was pallid, eyes shut tight, and brows furrowed like he was deep in thought before the accident, worry etched all over his face.
Brooklyn tried to get closer to see him, but Lawrence blocked her. He didn't say a word, but his actions at this moment clearly showed he considered himself Sebastian's father-in-law. "Sebastian, you okay?"
"Sebastian, it's Megan. Can you hear me?"
Voices of concern echoed, sounding like they came from close family.
Zach stumbled out of the operating room, eyes red and bloodshot from seven or eight hours of intense surgery.
Pulling off his mask, he saw Brooklyn's anxious eyes glued to Sebastian. Zach walked over, looking pained, and said, "He's out of danger now. He needs to rest. Don't worry."
"Thanks," Brooklyn said.
Quinn nodded, too. "Thanks, Dr. Carter."
Zach watched helplessly as Sebastian got taken to the ICU, and Brooklyn was kept away like an outsider. The anger in Zach's heart was about to blow.
"Brooklyn, come with me." Not caring about the scene anymore, Zach grabbed Brooklyn from Quinn and scurried away, who was left stunned, turning around to find Brooklyn gone.
"Zach, what are you doing?" Brooklyn asked.
Skidding to a halt, she found herself on the balcony, cornered by the railing.
Zach pointed back where they came from, his voice low and pained, "I wanna know what you're doing! The Kingsley family treats you like crap, and you still stick around? If anyone in that family treated you better, I wouldn't be doing this! Brooklyn, you're smart. Why are you so clueless about love? Don't you get that you can't survive in the Kingsley family?"
Brooklyn looked up, tears streaming down. She wiped them away and smiled bitterly, "Can I survive if I leave the Kingsley family? I'm dying. The virus is killing me. Do you get that?"
Zach said, "How did it get so bad so fast?"
The more Brooklyn wiped her tears, the more they just kept coming. Finally, she gave up and said calmly, "The speed of HIV progression depends on the patient's constitution. Mine's just like this. So, I don't have much time left. Soon, I'll start experiencing pain and fainting. I need to leave the Kingsley family before that happens. Do you get it?"
Her endless tears seemed to drip right onto his heart. Zach couldn't bear to look anymore. He spread his arms and hugged the frail Brooklyn.
She had lost so much weight, her bones poked him painfully.
"Don't be scared, Brooklyn. After this, there'll be no more tears, no more pain," Zach said.
Brooklyn cried in his arms.
Zach gently stroked her hair, closing his eyes in grief, tears welling up in his red, swollen eyes.
"I've already taken his blood sample and will do a blood test. I'll let you know the results," Zach's gentle voice came from above her head.
"Thanks."
He sighed softly, "I really don't wanna hear those words from you again."
In the ICU, Jennifer wiped her tears, anxiously dabbing Sebastian's forehead and cheeks, asking, "Dr. Moore, when will he wake up?"
Brycen leaned over and replied, "Generally, patients take at least three to five hours to wake up after surgery. Don't worry, the surgery was very successful. Dr. Carter personally performed it."
'Zach? Brooklyn's lover!' Jennifer thought.
"Mrs. Kingsley, you haven't slept all night. Go inside and rest for a while. I'll watch over him," Megan gently advised.
Jennifer nodded, "Megan, it's so considerate of you. You must be tired, too. When the caregiver comes, you should rest for a while."
Megan nodded obediently and gently helped Jennifer to the resting room in the ward.
When Megan came out again, Karen said, "Lawrence and I are going back. Megan, you must stay calm and perform well these days. Make sure to drive Brooklyn out of the Kingsley family."
"Don't worry, Karen. This time, Brooklyn will definitely be driven out of the Kingsley family."
The ward quieted down. Megan held Sebastian's hand, her slender fingers tracing his chiseled, handsome face. She leaned in close, pressing her lips lightly against his.
Holding her wildly beating heart, Megan smiled and gently stroked his hair, "Sebastian, see, in the end, the only one by your side is me. And it will only be me. Brooklyn will leave you sooner or later."
Sebastian was in a deep coma, the anesthesia still in effect, his mind almost blank.
But in his subconscious, a figure kept circling around. The figure became clearer, and he reached out to grab it, but it flew away, continuously soaring into the sky, drifting away. Sebastian murmured, "Brooklyn, don't leave, Brooklyn."
