Chapter 290 Nothing Else

In the evening, Brooklyn slowly woke up from her coma. Her eyes and throat still felt uncomfortable from the smoke. After a few tries, she finally managed to crack her eyes open.

Her vision was still all fuzzy, and she couldn't see anything. All she could make out was a man sitting on the sofa in front of the bed. The man was looking down at something, and his tall, blurry figure kinda looked like the man she’d been dreaming about while she was out cold.

Her throat was dry as a desert, and she croaked out, "Sebastian, is that you?"

Her voice was so soft, she wasn’t sure if the guy even heard her. She blinked a few times and looked again. The figure started to come into focus. The guy had already stood up and was walking over. As he got closer, she realized it wasn’t Sebastian.

Zach smiled gently and leaned closer to the weak Brooklyn. He looked at her pale face with a pained expression and pulled the thin quilt up a bit. "You're awake. Feeling any better?"

'This gentle voice and action can only come from Zach, right?' Brooklyn thought, feeling a wave of disappointment. The little spark of hope in her heart was snuffed out again. She shook her head and weakly said, "Much better. Have you been taking care of me all this time?"

Zach didn’t make a big deal out of it. "Drink some water. The smoke was thick, and your throat and eyes took a beating. Don’t talk too much and try to rest your eyes."

Brooklyn nodded. She really wanted some water.

She felt even more exhausted. She had thought that when she woke up, she’d see Sebastian sitting there. But she remembered he had chosen Megan.

Zach poured some water, holding a clear glass with his clean fingers. The setting sun cast a faint golden glow on his body, making him look all warm and cozy.

Carefully supporting Brooklyn's back, he let her lean against him. Zach didn’t give her a chance to refuse or struggle. He was wearing a white coat, as her doctor, and he could rightfully take care of her.

"It's not hot anymore. I thought you might wake up around this time, so I got it ready." Zach smiled softly and brought the glass to her lips, feeding her water bit by bit.

Brooklyn felt a bit awkward. After taking a sip, she struggled and said, "I can do it myself. Could you please raise the bed?"

Zach didn’t budge. "I'm just feeding you water; I won't do anything else. What are you worried about?"

'It is so strange. When did Zach become so bossy? Is he starting to act like Sebastian?' she thought.

Brooklyn turned her lips away and anxiously grabbed his sleeve, asking, "Where's Kelly? How is she?"

"She's fine. She's in better shape than you, but she’s got some external injuries. Luckily, she got treated in time and is doing fine in her ward with her parents. Don’t worry." Zach said.

'Great. During the fire, all I could think about was Kelly. I don’t mind dying, but Kelly can’t die!' Brooklyn thought.

After drinking up a glass of water, her dry and sore throat finally felt a bit better, and she said, "Thanks, Dr. Carter."

Zach's face tightened slightly. He put down the glass but didn’t rush to let her go. Instead, he looked at her profile and gently reminded her, "You're no longer a doctor at Aucester Hospital, so I'm not your boss anymore. You can just call me Zach. I told you, remember?"

His clear and pleasant voice softly echoed in her ears, very comfortable and gentle.

Brooklyn frowned as she thought, 'To be honest, calling Dr. Carter Zach feels too close and weird.'

After a long time, she finally convinced herself and called, "Thank you, Zach."

Zach didn’t get mad but smiled instead, his elegant face glowing with a hint of red. "Alright."

After saying that, he let her go, checked her eyes to make sure there were no lasting effects, and asked, "Is the temperature comfortable?"

The indoor air conditioning was set to a cozy temperature.

"Yes. I'm fine now. You can go back to work." she said.

When she first saw Zach, he was reading some documents, and there were still some files on the sofa that he hadn’t had a chance to look at.

Brooklyn felt very guilty. Zach was really good to her, so good that she found it hard to refuse him. If she let him down, she would feel ashamed for the rest of her life.
