Chapter 412 If You Need Help, Just Say So
"So, you think Scarlett and Brooklyn are alike?" Zach had indeed suspected it, given how similar their voices were.
Kelly nodded, "Yeah, I can't really explain the feeling, but when I'm with Scarlett, I feel a sense of familiarity. You know, Scarlett can be quite aloof, but strangely, even if she is aloof, I don't dislike it."
Kelly hesitated, thinking for a long time before finally expressing her thoughts.
Zach nodded. He had very few direct interactions with Scarlett, so he had no idea what she was like in her daily life. But hearing Kelly say this, Zach couldn't help but recall every detail of his past interactions with Scarlett, his doubts resurfacing.
"Scarlett has already gone back to Averlake. Even if we have questions now, we'll probably have to wait until she returns to get answers." He said.
"Really? She didn't tell me..." Kelly stopped mid-sentence. Well, given their current level of friendship, Scarlett didn't need to tell her everything.
They said their goodbyes at the hospital, and Zach drove back to his place, Kelly's words echoing in his mind. What was the difference between how Scarlett made him feel and how Brooklyn did? What were the similarities?
If Kelly felt familiar with Scarlett, wouldn't Sebastian, who spent every day with her, know?
With countless tangled thoughts, Zach rubbed his forehead at a red light, and all the bustling scenes before him felt meaningless.
Scarlett really wanted to find something at home that could help her recover her lost memories.
Even if it was just to know what exactly the real Scarlett used to do.
She had never doubted her identity before, so she had accepted everything that belonged to Scarlett. Now, overturning everything she had absorbed over the past two years was no simple task.
Moreover, many things in this house had been personally designed by her over the past two years. The decor, the study, the living room, the bedroom—Scarlett wandered around the house but found nothing.
The bookshelf was filled with classic literature from around the world. In such a wealthy family, even if they didn't read, they would display books for show. She flipped through them but found nothing suspicious.
When she first woke up, without saying anything, Leon had prepared all kinds of medical books at home, seamlessly and flawlessly.
Either Scarlett, like her, was also a doctor.
Brooklyn rummaged through the room, but everything was newly added in the past two years. She couldn't find anything of value.
She went downstairs, and the living room was very quiet. The most notable feature of the Taylor villa is its quietness—it's quiet when there are people, and even quieter when there are none.
Now, Diana was resting in the bedroom, and Leon had gone to the company. Scarlett had a sudden idea and went to the kitchen.
"Sophie."
The blonde maid named Sophie was wiping the kitchenware. Seeing Scarlett, she smiled and greeted, "Ms. Taylor, did you rest well? Would you like some coffee?"
Scarlett shook her head. How should she ask?
She thought for a moment, "Sophie, how long have you been working here?"
Sophie thought for a moment, "Two years."
Two years?
She came after the real Scarlett left, so it was impossible to get any information about the original Scarlett from her.
"Who in the house has been here the longest?"
Sophie seemed to think of everyone, muttering to herself. Most of the staff had been hired in the past two years.
Scarlett suddenly felt a surge of astonishment. Although she had only caught a glimpse, from the timing and extent of the personnel changes in this household, it was clear that Leon had put a lot of effort into it. The servants and cooks had all been replaced, coinciding exactly with the time of her incident.
This was definitely not a coincidence.
"Oh! The gardener has been here the longest. He's been here for five or six years, but he doesn't come every day. I think he's deaf. Every time he comes, he just keeps his head down and works, then leaves when he's done." Spophie exclaimed.
Damn it!
She had finally gotten some good news, only to find it had such an ending.
Scarlett nodded, feeling frustrated, her eyebrows furrowing.
The Taylor family's personnel changes could just prove that the real Scarlett's matter was not simple.
Who else could she ask? Since Diana and Leon were both trying to cover it up, asking them was definitely not an option. And as for Kevin, who was closer to her, she had no idea what he thought.
As she was feeling troubled, her phone rang.
Coincidentally, it was Kevin.
"Scarlett, how have you been resting?"
His warm and considerate voice hadn't changed a bit. She could even imagine him speaking with a smile, always waiting for her to look his way and be captivated.
"Yeah, very well."
"At six in the evening, the driver will pick you up. Your father just said that he and your mother will leave separately tonight. I thought it would be a good time for us to meet alone."
"Why?" Scarlett was confused.Since they were all going to the banquet tonight, why did he go out of his way to meet her alone?
Scarlett was a bit reluctant, so she blurted out her thoughts. After realizing how abrupt her question was, she didn't explain further and waited for Kevin's response.
Kevin smiled, without a hint of reproach, "I'm bringing my fiancée home. I can't just let you walk in by herself, can I?"
Was he really being considerate, or did he have another motive?
No matter what Kevin did now, Scarlett would suspect he had ulterior motives, making her head spin with guesses.
"Okay."
She had to meet the King family tonight. Just thinking about it made her a bit frustrated. It wasn't her first time meeting the King family'sand relatives, but thinking about the marriage, she felt dizzy.
Sebastian came out of the study at midnight. As he stepped out, the lights in the living room illuminated the entire villa, and under the bright lights, every piece of furniture on the first floor was clearly visible to his deep eyes.
He frowned, his hands in the pockets of his loungewear, and walked down the stairs.
It was so quiet here, like living alone on a deserted island, with no one around, and the whole world seemed to fall silent.
Scarlett left, and the vitality of the house left with her.
It was even more desolate and heart-wrenching than before she came.
Sebastian turned off the chandelier and the foyer light, leaving only the floor lamp by the sofa on. The yellow light enveloped Sebastian's figure. He casually pulled a book from the shelf under the coffee table, and it turned out to be the romance novel he and Scarlett had argued about for half a day.
Sebastian frowned and ran his fingers over the gaudy cover. The comic depicted a man and a woman, smiling warmly as they nestled together, accompanied by two children. The family of four walked and laughed together, portraying the kind of perfect happiness that only seems to exist in books.
At this time, it was daytime in Averlake. What was Brooklyn doing?
Picking up his phone, Sebastian sent a text to Scarlett:[How's it going? Smoothly?]
Although it wasn't particularly enthusiastic, it was a significant change from Sebastian's usual texting style. Given the current situation, Sebastian's mood was somewhat affected.
Seeing Sebastian's text, Scarlett was thinking about how to handle the evening. Strangely, his message felt like a distant hand accurately touching her pulse.
[Not going too smoothly at the moment. I'll adjust as soon as possible.]
Sebastian closed the book, sitting lazily on the carpet, his back against the sofa. One leg was stretched out on the carpet, the other bent, with the book resting on his raised knee, his fingers holding it in place.
Not wanting to waste time texting, Sebastian called directly.
"What's not going smoothly?"
Scarlett went upstairs and closed the door before saying, "It's a bit more challenging than I expected, so I need to put in some effort."
Sebastian nodded. Leon had changed Brooklyn's appearance to look like his daughter, deceiving everyone with unclear intentions.
Since Leon intended to hide it, it wouldn't be easily uncovered.
"Do you need my help?" Sebastian asked.
Scarlett shook her head, her fingers playing with an orchid on the balcony, its slender leaves slipping through her fingers. "No, I can handle it."
Nothing was flawless, there must be some loophole. She just couldn't find it yet. Once she found the entry point, everything would become clear.
As for refusing his help, Scarlett hadn't regained her memory yet. Who knew what Brooklyn's world was like?
Kevin wasn't easy to deal with, and the unfathomable Sebastian was even more terrifying.
Thinking about it made Scarlett's back feel cold. She was in a state of confusion, while others knew everything about her.
Sebastian stroked the book on his knee. "Have you met with Kevin?"
Scarlett's fingers brushed over the orchid leaves. "Yes, I have."
Was Sebastian asking too many detailed questions?
"What did you feel?" Sebastian asked, waiting patiently for her response.
Her feelings?
Scarlett didn't know if she should tell Sebastian her true feelings. She had to admit that being with Kevin was not as comfortable as being with Sebastian.
"Nothing special. Until I figure out the truth, many people are worth suspecting. I won't easily give my trust to anyone."
Sebastian tapped his fingers. "Including me?"
"Yes, especially you."
"Okay." Sebastian smiled good-naturedly. Given Brooklyn's current situation, not trusting anyone was better than blindly trusting someone.
Scarlett frowned. "It's so late. Why aren't you resting?"
"I am reading." Sebastian opened the book on his knee, flipping through a couple of pages. "A novel with no nutritional value."
Scarlett suddenly wanted to laugh. "Warm Marriage in Prosperous Times?"
Sebastian frowned, unwilling to admit it. "It's late. You should rest."
"Okay."
Putting down her phone, Scarlett stood by the window, arms crossed, and a picture of Sebastian sitting in the living room reading a book popped into her mind. After thinking for a moment, she couldn't help but laugh.
If she had to choose someone to marry, the always perfect and flawless Kevin was less appealing than the straightforward and honest Sebastian.
Sebastian flipped through the book and saw a page. "Solving unreliable suitors for your wife is also a husband's responsibility."
