Chapter 256 Sebastian Goes All In
'After my parents passed away, I am not that afraid of death anymore. All my fear of death is just because of my attachment to the present world, but now I have nothing to hold on to.' As Brooklyn thought about this, she changed into her white coat in the locker room, walking to the duty room. When she reached the elevator, the doors opened, and out came Piper.
Without her high heels, Brooklyn was about the same height as Piper, who was wearing two-inch mid-heel shoes. Their eyes met directly.
Brooklyn put her hands in the pockets of her coat, her face frosty, not intending to speak to her.
Piper, in stark contrast, seemed oddly cheerful." Dr. Mitchell, your timing couldn't be worse. Although Dr. Carter has temporarily withheld your medical results, shouldn't you be more considerate about others' lives? What if you're contagious…"
"Shut up." Brooklyn's cold, cutting words were accompanied by a steely glare that made Piper's mocking demeanor seem petty. The bitterness in Brooklyn's heart was now overtaken by anger.
Piper smirked, "What did you just say?!"
Brooklyn's expression was blank, her unadorned face bearing a worn-out kind of beauty—a beauty that grew more striking the more one got to know her.
"I said, Dr. Rivera, you'd better shut up. Or would you like to experience the consequences of being infected yourself? If not, you might want to keep your distance from me these days!"
Her words left Piper stunned into silence.
It had been a while since Brooklyn had displayed her usual style, and Piper might have forgotten how formidable she was at Aucester Hospital.
Brooklyn, her long legs encased in tight black pants, headed straight for the elevator.
She was leaving, of course—she was there to submit her resignation. Zach had promised to keep her secret, and she intended to leave without anyone knowing the full story.
The Kingsley family's mistress couldn't afford to let anyone know she was ill.
Steadying herself and stopping the tears, Brooklyn refused to dwell on her sorrow. She needed to leave decisively.
George was clearly shocked by her resignation letter, staring at the envelope as if he couldn't comprehend it. "Why are you resigning? You need to give me a valid reason, or I won't let you go."
Brooklyn, in front of George, seemed like a child. She smiled, her lips curving in a somewhat pleading manner. "George, I want to see the world outside. Are you really going to deny me that wish?"
George rubbed his forehead, troubled. "Brooklyn, you're a key part of our internal medicine team. You can't just leave, no matter what's happened. Unless you need a break—if that's the case, I'll keep your position open for you."
Brooklyn shook her head. "No need for that. My mind is made up. I'll arrange for my patients to be taken care of by my assistants and other doctors, so their treatment won't be delayed."
"But I saw your name on the volunteer list for supporting Jabari."
"I will support Jabari's medical efforts, but not as an Aucester Hospital doctor. George, thank you for taking care of me these past three years. I wish you good health in the future."
Brooklyn's brief explanation shut down George's attempts at persuasion. She didn't have much time left—she would do what she could.
Next, Brooklyn went to find Zach.
As he was standing face to face with Brooklyn in his office, with the door firmly shut, Zach's intense gaze was matched by his nervously wringing hands. "So, your decision is to go to Jabari with me?"
Brooklyn nodded. After a night's reflection, she seemed like a different person—calm, resolute. "Yes, I'm going to Jabari. Please arrange things over there. I can't continue treating patients here; I'd only be a burden. Are you sure you want to take on such a liability?"
Zach shook his head, his fingers trembling as if he wanted to grasp her hand, but he restrained himself. "You will never be a burden. For some of us, your presence is everything."
He thought, 'Including me.'
Brooklyn held back her sorrow, her eyes dimming with a resigned calmness. Her voice, soaked with emotion as if washed clean by heavy rain, seemed to draw tears from those who heard it. "Is it alright if I can't marry you?"
Zach closed his eyes for a moment, his silence an answer in itself. Then he added, "Marrying you isn't my ultimate goal. Just being with you is enough. If there's anything else you need from me, just ask. I'll do everything I can to help."
She thought, 'Is there anything else?'
Brooklyn shook her head, realizing she had nothing left to cling to in this city.
She hesitated, biting her lip as she tried to find the right words. "This afternoon, could you come with me to a place? No matter what happens, you might be the only one who stays by my side until the end. I think it's important that you see this place with me."
Without a moment's hesitation, Zach responded, "Of course!"
