Chapter 188 Explain What?
"Dr. Mitchell got called in by Dr. Rivera again. I'm feeling really uneasy. Do you think Dr. Mitchell's had a good day since Dr. Rivera showed up?" one doctor asked.
"She's got a lot on her plate. Let's wait for her to come back and fill us in," another replied.
In Piper's office, Brooklyn leaned back in her chair, trying to ease her stomach pain. "What do you want, Dr. Rivera?"
Piper sat down, arms crossed, her sharp eyeliner giving Brooklyn an intense look as she eyed Brooklyn. "Dr. Clark wants you to handle the entire inspection and," she added reluctantly, "assist Dr. Carter in reorganizing the cardiology department for now."
She tossed a document at Brooklyn, her red lips curling into a sneer. "Brooklyn, you're really something! Seems like you're needed everywhere!"
Was that so? Brooklyn sneered inwardly. Who cared? She wished she could stay out of these matters.
Taking the document, Brooklyn asked, "Anything else, Dr. Rivera?"
Piper glared at her. "The patient from last time decided against surgery. Happy now?"
The patient from the meeting?
"Patients naturally want to avoid harm. It's not my fault. If there's nothing else, I've got work to do." Brooklyn really didn't want to waste more time with Piper.
"Hold on." Piper stood up, walked behind her, and coldly taunted, "Brooklyn, don't think helping Dr. Carter will give you an edge!"
A hint of disdain curled at Brooklyn's mouth. She turned around, enduring the stomach pain with a light smile. "Well then, Dr. Rivera, why don't you take my place?"
"There's nothing else. You can go," Piper said.
Piper had tried to argue, but George said she was new and didn't get the whole picture. Brooklyn had been here a long time and knew everything, so she could complement Zach.
George didn't mean anything by it; he just wanted the hospital to pass the inspection smoothly.
Piper was resentful, but there was nothing she could do.
Brooklyn opened the document and read a few lines before her phone rang.
She was marking key points with a pen when she answered.
"Dr. Mitchell, I look forward to working with you. I was surprised by Dr. Clark's arrangement, too, but I just got the notification, so..." It was Zach.
Brooklyn smiled. "Dr. Carter, it's okay. I understand, and I trust you wouldn't misuse your authority."
Zach finally let out a sigh of relief. "I was worried you might misunderstand, especially since," he paused, "I'm pursuing you now, and sometimes I have to play some tricks."
As Brooklyn held the pen, a long black line accidentally streaked across the document. "Dr. Carter, I've told you, we..."
"Did you get the document? Let's start by inspecting the medical equipment today." Zach changed the subject so fast that Brooklyn didn't get a chance to finish.
"Alright," Brooklyn replied.
Inspecting the equipment shouldn't take up work time, so Zach and Brooklyn quickly grabbed lunch and used their break to dive into the cardiology department.
In the cardiology ward, Samantha greeted them with a smile, watching the two young doctors and finding them quite charming.
"I heard Dr. Carter and Dr. Mitchell are an item. Is that true?" Samantha asked with a grin.
Zach, ignoring the question, said, "The frequency is stable here. Let's check over there."
Brooklyn wanted to explain, but Zach's interruption left her no room. "Alright, the controller is fine. This equipment is three years old but still works well."
Samantha, with nothing to do during her break, watched them work. "Dr. Carter is promising, and Dr. Mitchell is a renowned expert. You two make a great team."
Brooklyn tried to speak again, but Zach seemed engrossed in the equipment. "The display's cathode-ray tube is aging and needs replacing."
Brooklyn nodded and made a note.
While she was jotting down notes, Samantha kept chatting with Zach about unrelated yet seemingly professional topics. Brooklyn tried to interrupt several times but couldn't.
Clearing up misunderstandings needed to be done at the right moment. Once that moment passed, explaining later could make things worse and seem suspicious.
Plus, with Samantha constantly praising them and patients echoing her sentiments, insisting on clarifying would inevitably hurt Zach's reputation.
Finally, the inspection was done, and the equipment only needed a small part replaced.
"Why didn't you explain earlier?" Brooklyn asked Zach as they walked out. She didn't get a chance, but Zach did. He could've cleared things up from the start, but he didn't.
Zach put his hands in his pockets, stopped walking, and turned to her. The sunlight cast a gentle glow on his face in the hospital corridor, his clean smile untouched. "Explain what?"
"Dr. Scott seemed to misunderstand something earlier. Our relationship is clearly different from what she thought. By staying silent, you're deepening the misunderstanding."
Brooklyn decided to be clearer to avoid further awkwardness.
Zach smiled, his handsome face soft in the backlight. "I was checking the equipment and didn't hear what Dr. Scott said. Why don't you tell me what she was mumbling about?"
Brooklyn's heart twisted in knots. It seemed Zach hadn't taken it seriously at all, had he? She felt awkward and eager to clarify, but he appeared calm, making her seem narrow-minded.
