Chapter 48 Her Silence Spoke Volumes

Brooklyn clutched the bouquet of lilies, her countenance unaltered. With a serene tone, she declared, "I must remind you that this is a hospital, a place for healing and preserving lives, not a stage for media spectacle."

"Dr. Mitchell! Dr. Mitchell, please just answer one question. That's all we ask."

"Dr. Mitchell..."

Brooklyn's gaze flickered towards George, who promptly summoned the hospital security to escort the intrusive reporters away. Unfazed by the lingering stares, Brooklyn proceeded towards the nearby elevator, her stride steady and purposeful. Apologies? Placards? And a horde of reporters? Was this the appropriate response to creating a disturbance in a hospital? Brooklyn couldn't help but harbor doubts.

"Goodness! Such a magnificent bouquet! Dr. Mitchell, you've become quite the sensation in our hospital! You're practically the face of Aucester Hospital!" Ellie theatrically embraced Brooklyn's flowers and placards, her eyes sparkling with admiration.

"If you're so fond of them, I can give them to you."

"Really? It's usually the doctors who apologize to the patients' families. This is the first time I've seen a family member apologizing to a doctor. Are the doctors now taking the lead?"

Felix interjected, "Taking the lead? Only for something specific."

"Dr. Reed, don't be so cynical. At last, I see a glimmer of hope for my profession." Ellie clung to the flowers, convinced that these milestone blooms should forever remain vibrant.

Sienna had just completed a patient's examination, taking extra time as she also reviewed Brooklyn's patient.

"Dr. Mitchell, are you treating us to a meal today?"

Brooklyn responded without hesitation, "Of course, you can choose anything from the cafeteria."

"You're treating us to a meal in the cafeteria? Dr. Mitchell, you're so considerate towards your patients. Why can't you extend the same kindness to us?"

Brooklyn took the medical record from Sienna's hand and skimmed through it, finding nothing unusual about her patient. "You want me to be kind to you? That's easy. You can feign an illness, preferably one that necessitates heart surgery. I assure you, I'll take good care of you for a few months."

"Dr. Mitchell! Don't be so heartless!"

At lunchtime, Brooklyn did indeed treat Sienna and Ellie to a meal in the cafeteria. Despite selecting the most expensive dishes, the two of them still felt somewhat discontented.

As they dined, the cafeteria patrons seemed engrossed in a discussion about Brooklyn. She felt their scrutinizing stares and found it difficult to enjoy her meal.

Indeed, adjusting to fame was no easy task!

Sienna playfully jabbed her fork and whispered, "Dr. Mitchell, if you ever quit medicine, you could definitely pursue a career in showbiz. You look stunning on screen."

Brooklyn remained engrossed in her meal, oblivious to Sienna's comment. However, Ellie glanced up and noticed the television screen in the cafeteria. The french fries she had just bitten into fell back onto her plate.

"Good heavens! Did they interview you?"

Upon seeing herself clad in a white coat on the screen, Brooklyn's brow furrowed in annoyance. 'Those reporters are truly relentless!' she thought.

"Finish your meals. Are you both full?"
"Dr. Mitchell, your response was so aloof yet charismatic! You're truly my idol! Please accept my admiration!" Sienna gushed, her gaze fixed on the television screen. On the screen, Brooklyn turned and walked away, leaving behind an image of poise and grace. The scene was simply breathtaking!

The same scene played out on a large screen in Sebastian's office.

With his hands clasped behind his back, Dario asked, "Mr. Kingsley, what do you think? Did I handle this situation well?"

Sebastian shot him a frosty glance, effectively silencing Dario.

"Don't you have more pressing matters to attend to?"

Sebastian retorted coldly.

"Indeed, I have a plethora of tasks to complete. Mr. Kingsley, I'll take my leave now."

As Dario exited, Sebastian's gaze lingered on the frozen screen. It showcased a beautiful white silhouette, akin to a dazzling ray of light amidst a floral garden.

Unexpectedly, a smile graced Sebastian's lips.

Following their midday meal, the physicians of the internal medicine department convened for an unexpected assembly to deliberate on a singular topic.

"Everyone is aware that the deputy director's position in our department has remained unoccupied for a significant period," the speaker began. "The hospital has at last identified a fitting candidate. The incoming deputy director will assume his duties in a few days. We must all be ready."

The meeting concluded, and a group of over a dozen doctors engaged in fervent conversation.

"I've heard that our new deputy director is a distinguished medical doctor from Timbridge University, a recipient of numerous medical accolades! Moreover, he's reputed to be more attractive than the leading men in popular television dramas!"

"And that's not all! He's a first-rate surgeon as well! But why would he transition to internal medicine?"

"So, we're gaining a handsome addition to our internal medicine team! I can hardly wait!"

Brooklyn, however, refrained from participating in the excited chatter. She mulled over the news, 'A medical doctor from Timbridge University? That would make him at least thirty-five years old. More attractive than television heartthrobs? So, he's likely a middle-aged leading man, right?

A handsome man? It's truly peculiar if such a perfect man genuinely exists.'

As Brooklyn prepared to depart following the end of her shift, she recalled a patient who required an increased dosage of antibiotics. She thus directed her steps towards the inpatient department.

"Brooklyn!"

She had barely taken a few strides when a strident voice reverberated arrogantly down the corridor. Brooklyn paused, hands tucked into her pockets, and looked up. Approaching her was a woman, heavily made-up, her high heels clacking loudly against the floor. With a swivel of her hips, she tossed her long, curly hair, radiating a sultry, captivating aura.

Even behind her oversized sunglasses, Brooklyn instantly recognized the woman, Megan, who was evidently harboring malicious intent.

"Ms. Turner, what seems to be the problem?" Brooklyn responded, her voice cool and detached. Megan closed the distance between them rapidly, a smug smirk playing on her lips. "Brooklyn, you're quite something!"

As she finished her sentence, Megan raised her arm, aiming to strike Brooklyn's face.

"Ms. Turner, control yourself!" Brooklyn swiftly caught Megan's wrist, surprising her with her quick reflexes.

Megan gritted her teeth and yanked her wrist back forcefully, her voice seething with anger, "What did you say to Sebastian, you shameless hussy?"

Brooklyn inwardly surmised, 'So, it's about him! But apart from Sebastian, there's no reason for our paths to cross.' She stared at Megan's heavily made-up face and scoffed, "I didn't say anything to him. We just slept together!"
