Chapter 307 Unexpected Discovery, The Truth from Five Years Ago

Zach scooped Brooklyn up and carried her straight into the elevator, hitting the button for the top floor.

He laid her down in his break room at the hospital.

"You're not going anywhere today," he said, locking the door behind him. When he came back, he had two IV bags. "Let's get that fever down first. You're too weak and need some energy. Just lie down and relax."

Zach leaned in, finding a vein on the back of her hand. "This won't hurt. Trust me."

Brooklyn let out a chuckle, the only thing she could manage. "Zach, do you think it's God's way to drive someone insane, break them completely, and leave them with nothing before taking everything away?"

The needle slid in smoothly, just like he said, no pain.

He adjusted the IV speed, making sure everything was good to go.

Zach didn't answer her question. Instead, he grabbed a clean towel from the restroom, wiped the food off her face, and changed the subject. "I wish I had met you first. I would've made you my wife before he had the chance to hurt you."

Brooklyn looked at him, a bit helpless that he was getting all sentimental. "Zach, you're a good man, but I'm not a good woman. If I had a choice, I wouldn't have met you first either. Being with me would just bring you bad luck."

She couldn't bear that thought.

After cleaning her up, Zach sat down. "You're amazing. It's him who messed you up. I still remember how you looked doing CPR on a patient. Dr. Mitchell was really awesome."

Brooklyn shook her head, then something clicked. "Why did Sebastian's surgery take so long? It shouldn't have taken that long."

Zach looked puzzled too. "Did Sebastian have a heart injury a few years ago?"

'A few years ago? I have no idea,' Brooklyn thought.

"What happened?" she asked.

Zach pulled out his phone and showed her a picture. "This is an old and new injury on Sebastian's heart. The old one is at least five years old and almost overlaps with the new one, which made the surgery tougher."

Brooklyn took the phone with her free hand and examined the photo closely.

She stared at the heart scars and sutures, muttering, "How could this be?"

Brooklyn seemed to lose it, repeating that phrase over and over. Her eyes went from focused to vacant, staring blankly at the phone screen, her hand shaking uncontrollably.

Seeing this, Zach grabbed her shoulders, his voice deep with worry. "What's going on? Brooklyn, don't scare me. What's happening?"

Brooklyn looked up, her face blank, struggling to sit up despite the needle in her hand. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she said, "Zach, I know now..."

'What is she trying to say?' Zach wondered.

"Take your time," he said gently.

Brooklyn swallowed hard, her throat tight. It took her a moment to catch her breath. "Five years ago, Sebastian had a car accident. I was the one who performed his heart surgery."

'What?!' Zach felt like he'd been struck by lightning, his back tensing up in shock. "You?"

Brooklyn yanked the needle out of her hand. "I need to find him. I need to tell him that the person he always thought saved his life wasn't Megan. It was me."

Her words were jumbled, her actions frantic. She tried to get out of bed, tears streaming down her face. 'Not only that! Also, because of this surgery...'

Zach wrapped his arms around the out-of-control Brooklyn, stopping her. "Brooklyn, listen to me. Sebastian is still unconscious. He can't hear you. And if you tell him now, do you want him to feel even more pain? He was wrong for five years, and now that the truth is out, you're leaving. How do you expect him to handle that?"

Given Sebastian's personality, he would definitely go crazy looking for Brooklyn.

Brooklyn suddenly stopped moving, crying silently, tears streaming down her pale face.

'Why does it have to be like this? Why does this have to happen to me?' she thought.

Zach tried to calm her down. "Brooklyn, tell me the whole story. If there's a chance, I can tell him everything for you, but not now."

Brooklyn pulled away from his embrace, tears streaming down her face, her lips trembling. She closed her eyes, and more tears fell. "Five years ago, the hospital where I was interning got a patient. He was covered in blood, and I didn't know who he was. The hospital treated him like a test subject, so I got to perform the surgery. During the operation, I accidentally cut my hand with the scalpel."

Brooklyn paused, struggling to breathe, her face turning red. "But I didn't want to give up on him. I pushed through and completed the surgery."

She couldn't continue.

Zach supported her and added, "So your hand got worse, and you could never hold a scalpel again. You had to switch to internal medicine. So all the suffering you've endured these years was actually caused by saving Sebastian! That bastard!"
