Chapter 72 Don't Pretend to Be Aloof
Brooklyn finished cleaning the kitchen utensils, lifted the lid of the pot, and a fragrant smell wafted out as the lid was lifted. Brooklyn asked in a cold tone, "Do you want to eat or not?"
Sebastian remained silent.
Thinking he didn't want to eat, Brooklyn put all the instant noodles in a bowl, placed it on the dining table, arranged the fork, and then returned to the kitchen. But when she came back to the dining room, she found the bowl of instant noodles placed in front of Sebastian. He was eating the noodles with his slender fingers holding the fork.
Brooklyn frowned, thinking if he wanted to eat, he should just say so instead of pretending to be aloof.
Without saying a word, Brooklyn took another fork, and sat across from him as if no one was there. The two of them quietly ate the instant noodles.
The atmosphere was too eerie. As they were almost finished with the noodles, Sebastian still hadn't said a word. He savored the instant noodles carefully. He found them surprisingly delicious, even though he considered this food trash. However, Brooklyn, who showed no expression, seemed to dislike his presence.
"I will be on a business trip tomorrow." Out of the blue, he said.
Brooklyn thought, 'A business trip? Why did he tell me? Was he hinting that the owner of the house would be leaving, asking me to take care of the house to prevent any accidents?'
"I will move out tomorrow. Quinn has already been here, so he probably won't come again." Brooklyn replied coldly.
Sebastian's fingers almost broke the fork, "If there's a first time, there will be a second time. Do you hope I will personally invite you back then?"
Brooklyn raised her eyes and looked at Sebastian across the table. However, she felt that the distance between them was so far. No matter how hard she tried or wanted to get closer, it felt like they were separated by a riverbank, looking up at each other.
"I will contact Quinn and tell him not to come again. If he wants to see you, he can find a coffee shop or a restaurant." Brooklyn replied.
She lightly bit her pink lips scent of instant noodles should remain between her lips and teeth. Why did it taste so bitter?
Sebastian's voice was deep, and he slowly said, "I think the most suitable place is the old mansion. Or would you like to attend another banquet at the Kingsley family?"
The Kingsley family's banquet was like a taboo in Brooklyn's heart. He knew very well that it was the thing she hated and kept at a distance the most.
"Fine, I'll stay. But I think he probably won't come during your business trip." Brooklyn responded.
"You understand him so well?" Sebastian was dripping with sarcasm.
Brooklyn clenched the fork, lost her appetite, and suddenly felt full. She retorted, "I don't understand. How could I understand the young master of the Kingsley family?"
She put down the fork, feeling there was nothing more to say, so she decided to leave the table.
"Sit down," he ordered coldly. "Who allowed you to leave before your husband did?"
Brooklyn chuckled, "Husband? Sebastian, I can't afford it anymore. The one who is more qualified to call you husband is the woman who is pregnant now."
Sebastian harshly slammed the fork on the table, making a crisp sound as if slapping her in the face, leaving a burning sensation that seeped into her bones.
The dinner ended on a sour note. Sebastian, full of anger, returned to the study, while Brooklyn cleaned the dishes.
After reading a book and preparing to sleep, Brooklyn opened the door to the master bedroom, only to find Sebastian already lying down!
Brooklyn thought, 'He wanted to sleep in the master bedroom, asserting his dominance as Mr. Kingsley. What kind of attitude was he displaying?'
Sebastian hadn't fallen asleep yet, pretending to be asleep with his eyes closed. So, the sound of Brooklyn going into the bathroom to take a shower could be heard by him.
Separated by this wall, this door, they were in two different worlds. Even though he could hear it, he couldn't do anything.
He maintained a cold face and stopped paying attention to her.
Brooklyn spent the night in the guest room. The next day, Sebastian left the villa early to catch a flight, and Brooklyn didn't see him.
"Dr. Mitchell, why did our deputy director change? We were expecting a handsome guy! Why did it turn into a woman? And when I saw her just now, I was almost scared to death. She's very beautiful, but too aloof!" A college complained to Brooklyn.
"Just get used to it. Besides, if you don't provoke her, you shouldn't get into trouble." Brooklyn consoled. She had been having a rough time lately and was too busy to deal with these complicated matters.
Piper had just taken office, and the first thing she did was visit each ward. Brooklyn and her team followed closely, serving her carefully.
Fortunately, Brooklyn was able to explain all the tricky questions she raised, and the doctors accompanying her silently appreciated Brooklyn's wit and professional knowledge.
But Piper's disdainful gaze was quite obvious.
"It's easy to talk, but actual practice may not be that simple." This was the evaluation she gave after the rounds.
Brooklyn didn't care.
"Dr. Mitchell, come with me." Piper added.
Brooklyn followed Piper to the office. As soon as she stood firm, Piper sternly said, "Are you applying for the title of professor?"
"Yes, I have already received the application form." Brooklyn replied.
Piper sneered, "What qualifications do you have to apply? Do you know what the title of professor signifies?"
Brooklyn was puzzled. Piper had just taken office. Why was she targeting her everywhere?
"Ms. Rivera, the application form was personally given to me by Mr. Wilson. He knows best whether it meets the application requirements." Brooklyn responded.
"Mr. Wilson has resigned, and the matters he handled will be re-evaluated. If you want to apply, go find the new Vice Dean!"
