Chapter 137 A Child Can't Be Without a Father
"Is she really Sebastian's lover? This time, it's confirmed that Sebastian personally flew a helicopter to the AIDS village to pick her up. What a grand gesture!"
"That's not all! Recently, someone spotted her living in Bayside Villas! Think about it: Bayside Villas, a place teeming with celebrities and politicians. Only someone like Sebastian can afford to live there!"
"So, he claimed he was recovering from an injury, but he was actually rescuing Brooklyn."
Enough already! This matter was being discussed again!
Brooklyn thought it was just idle gossip, but it had serious consequences.
It directly affected her professional title evaluation.
Brooklyn received a notice to go to George's office. As soon as she entered, she saw several hospital leaders, including Zach, sitting inside.
George sighed deeply, shaking his head while holding Brooklyn's resume.
Brooklyn inquired, "Mr. Clark, what do you mean my evaluation result is unqualified?"
George adjusted his glasses and said regretfully, "Brooklyn, I know your skills and abilities are second to none, and you absolutely meet the evaluation requirements. However, as a professor, personal image is important. Our hospital's professors lead graduate and doctoral students, and we always value the reputation of our professors."
The implication was clear: her current notorious reputation, being labeled as Sebastian's lover, made the hospital and school leaders wary.
She didn't argue further or forcefully explain. Such a controversial matter couldn't be clarified easily.
She politely thanked them and left the office.
She walked to the balcony, her steps a bit unsteady. Why had her luck been so bad lately?
Nothing was going right.
Zach's warm breath came from behind. The summer wind blew on his face, bringing a stuffy heat, but his breath was clean and refreshing.
"Sorry, I couldn't help you."
His apology was so gentle that it made her feel very guilty.
"This isn't your responsibility. You've already helped me, and I'm very grateful," she responded wearily, exhausted physically and mentally.
Zach wanted to say more, but she didn't want to listen. "Mr. Carter, let me be alone for a while, okay?"
Her voice was cold and low because her heart was too bitter.
"Okay, if you need anything, just let me know."
He wasn't comfortable leaving her alone, but he didn't dare to disobey her.
Brooklyn quickly composed herself and returned to the office ten minutes later.
After hearing about the evaluation, Sienna and Ellie were indignant on her behalf. "Dr. Mitchell, don't be sad. Your hard work will definitely pay off!"
"It's just that Samantha Scott got lucky. With her level, she actually got selected as a professor! The students she mentors are doomed!"
"Dr. Mitchell, you're still the best! You're a genuinely excellent doctor!"
Brooklyn forced a smile. "You don't need to comfort me. I'm fine. I have a lot of work to do and no time to think too much."
Indeed, she had no time to wallow in sadness because the emergency room's internal alarm sounded!
"The patient is a five-year-old girl who accidentally fell, causing cardiac contusion! Immediate emergency treatment is needed!"
Brooklyn didn't have time for anything else. She grabbed her stethoscope and rushed over. The little girl, Addison Green, lay on the stretcher, her face pale, with an oxygen mask covering most of it.
"Dr. Mitchell, the patient's heart rate is dropping! Her blood pressure is unstable!"
Brooklyn held Addison's face with both hands and softly called to her, "Sweetie, can you hear me?"
Tears rolled down Addison's cheeks. She couldn't make a sound, only cry.
"The patient is still conscious, so the situation isn't the worst."
"Sweetie, don't be afraid. We're going to treat you right away. You'll be fine when you wake up. Don't be scared, okay?" Brooklyn comforted the child.
Brooklyn lowered her voice, "She has internal bleeding and a ruptured heart valve. Prepare for surgery immediately!"
Just as the stretcher was about to be pushed away, Addison grabbed one of Brooklyn's fingers with all her remaining strength. This small force deeply moved Brooklyn. She bent down and patted Addison's head. "Don't be afraid. I promise I'll be here when you wake up."
Only then did Addison let go.
The surgery lasted most of the day. Brooklyn kept her promise. When Addison was sent to the ward, she learned the approximate time of her awakening and went over after putting down her case files.
Addison's mother, Paisley, was already in tears.
When she saw Brooklyn, she grabbed her hands and thanked her profusely.
Brooklyn said, "This is our duty. You don't need to do this. Besides, I didn't perform the surgery. If you want to thank someone, thank the doctors in the operating room."
"Regardless, my daughter is alive because of you all! Thank you! Really, thank you!"
Brooklyn checked Addison's post-operative condition, which was good.
Before long, Addison woke up. Her weak breathing and heart were heart-wrenching.
Addison held Brooklyn's finger and weakly smiled. "I thought you wouldn't come to see me, just like when my dad left."
Her father had abandoned her and her mother years ago, disappearing without a trace. Addison saw a familiar figure on the balcony and thought it was her dad, so she jumped.
