Chapter 339 Hope to Never Return to Libertya in This Lifetime
Even though it was her first speech and she was up against the best of the best from Lincolnton University, Scarlett stayed cool and collected. She kept her talk short and sweet, focusing on heart surgery and then diving into the latest treatments for Tetralogy of Fallot.
When she finished, it was time for questions.
Standing in the spotlight, Scarlett looked like she was glowing. She didn't smile, but she didn't seem harsh either; she had this queen-like vibe going on.
The women were jealous, and the men couldn't help but admire her.
With one hand on the mic stand, Scarlett said, "Alright, you can ask your questions now. Let's keep them related to the speech, no personal stuff, please."
That pretty much killed the audience's curiosity, leaving a lot of them bummed out. So, the questions stayed super formal, packed with medical jargon and deep discussions.
After about twenty minutes of this, Kane waved at Scarlett from the stage. She walked over gracefully. "Mr. Richardson, do you need something?"
Kane grinned, his blue eyes sparkling with a hint of trouble. "Ms. Taylor, these students are usually buried in their studies. The previous speakers were all older folks. Today, we finally have a young and beautiful professor. Let's loosen up a bit."
Scarlett raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
Kane put his hands together in a pleading gesture. "Please, Ms. Taylor, just this once."
Scarlett couldn't say no to Kane's puppy-dog eyes. "Alright, but only for ten minutes."
"Deal, just ten minutes, no more." With that, Kane announced that the audience could ask whatever they wanted.
The crowd went wild!
A blue-eyed girl eagerly asked, "Hey, Ms. Taylor, are you seeing anyone? You're stunning; you must have a line of suitors!"
Scarlett stayed calm and adjusted the mic. "Nah, no boyfriend for me."
This news thrilled the single guys in the audience! Even some of the seasoned experts and scholars perked up, thinking they might have a shot.
But then Scarlett added, "I have a fiancé."
And just like that, a lot of hearts were broken.
"Ms. Taylor, you're from Libertya, but you seem like someone from Averlake. Have you lived there for a long time?"
"I'm not sure how many years, but my earliest memories are from Averlake," Scarlett replied.
'So, she was probably born in Averlake,' the audience thought.
But then Scarlett added, "Due to certain events from the past, my memories of early childhood are quite hazy."
Her words added a layer of mystery to her identity.
The crowd's excitement for questions grew out of control. A male student grabbed the mic and stood on a chair to ask, "Ms. Taylor, it's said you only treat the rich and powerful, not regular folks. But in Libertya, we believe everyone is equal to a doctor. How do you explain that?"
Finally, someone asked the tough question.
Scarlett glanced at the guy. "If everyone is equal, then why do you talk about the rich and powerful?"
The student was left speechless.
"Ms. Taylor, I'm also from Libertya. Once I finish my studies in Averlake, I intend to return and contribute to my homeland. Have you ever thought of returning? Any plans to visit?" This came from a delicate-looking girl from Libertya, who had eagerly grabbed the mic, hoping to rally her fellow countrymen.
Scarlett hesitated. To her, Libertya was merely a silhouette on a map; she had never set foot there.
"If circumstances allow, I hope to never set foot in Libertya during this lifetime." Her expression softened a bit, but her words were shocking.
"Why?" The girl was almost in tears, clutching the mic.
Scarlett's eyes finally showed a hint of emotion. "I only save those on the brink of death. I hope no one in Libertya ever needs my help."
Upon her words' conclusion, applause and cheers erupted from the Libertyan and Aseasian attendees, with Jabari students joining in.
The speech ended on a high note, and Scarlett left the stage to applause and cheers.
Avoiding the noisy crowd, Scarlett took a small path to the Hall of Fame at Lincolnton University, surrounded by lush greenery and birds chirping.
As Scarlett climbed the steps, she admired the blooming flowers and unknowingly reached the entrance of a research institute.
As she pushed the door open, a tall figure emerged from inside.
Scarlett, failing to notice Zach's documents, inadvertently bumped into him, causing his papers to scatter on the ground. "Sorry, are you okay?"
Zach didn't respond immediately but stared at Scarlett in surprise, gazing at her for a few seconds.
Scarlett frowned, bent down to assist Zach, and their hands inadvertently grasped the same document in the confusion.
