Chapter 47 Apology
Brooklyn had barely set foot on the hospital steps when she observed a group of doctors walking in a hushed conference. As she slipped through a side door, she also caught sight of several cardiovascular surgeons, their heads bowed in deep discussion.
There was an unusual tension in the air that day at the hospital.
Despite this, she continued on her path, paying little heed to the murmured conversations around her. As she was changing in the locker room, a tap on her shoulder from Sienna startled her. "Dr. Mitchell, have you noticed the strange atmosphere today?" Sienna asked.
A frown creased Brooklyn's forehead as she pondered, 'Could it be that people are aware of what’s going on between Sebastian and me?'
"Is there something different?" Brooklyn queried, feigning nonchalance as she donned her lab coat and casually slipped a pen into her shirt pocket.
Sienna's lips tightened. "Are you truly oblivious to such a big issue?"
"What issue?" Brooklyn, who had sensed the unusual atmosphere as soon as she arrived, wondered, 'Has something actually occurred?'
Sienna, now also dressed and pen in hand, teased in a mysterious tone, "Dr. Mitchell, it seems you're intrigued now as well."
"I need to attend to the patients now. Save the story for when I return," Brooklyn replied, exiting the locker room before Sienna had a chance to disclose anything.
"Wait! Dr. Mitchell..." Sienna called, but Brooklyn was already out of earshot.
Brooklyn, medical records in hand, was preparing to head to the ward when George hurriedly approached her. "Brooklyn, come with me immediately."
"Mr. Clark, what's the matter? Can't it wait? I need to go..."
"If it wasn't urgent, would I have sought you out personally? Sienna can examine the patients in your stead. Come with me."
Brooklyn was perplexed, thinking, 'What on earth happened today? Why is everyone behaving so peculiarly?'
Following George, they arrived at the outpatient building of the hospital. Brooklyn was met with the sight of dozens of people standing neatly in four or five rows, each holding a bouquet of flowers and many bearing posters lauding Brooklyn's medical expertise and character.
These were the family members of the patients who had previously caused trouble at the hospital.
What stunned Brooklyn further was the presence of several journalists in the lobby!
"Dr. Mitchell, we're here to apologize. We were mistaken last time. You're not only compassionate but also an incredibly skilled doctor. We misunderstood you."
"Dr. Mitchell, please accept our apologies. We promise not to tarnish your reputation any further."
Brooklyn was taken aback, staring at them in disbelief, momentarily at a loss for words.
She thought to herself, 'Have the autopsy results been released? Why wasn't I notified?'
George offered a warm smile, saying, "Brooklyn, your insistence on performing an autopsy and conducting tests has revealed the truth. This is beneficial for both you and the hospital."
Faced with George's courtesy and the sincerity of the crowd, Brooklyn responded helplessly, "Mr. Clark, as long as the misunderstanding is cleared, that's sufficient. But all these gestures are unnecessary, aren't they?"
The hall was teeming with people, patients and doctors alike, disrupting the usual order.
"Dr. Mitchell, we sincerely apologize. Please, you must accept!" The leader of the group extended a large bouquet of lilies, while another man held up a poster. Their demeanor was earnest, a stark contrast to their previous hostility.
Feeling cornered, Brooklyn had no choice but to accept the flowers. "Since you've seen the test results and apologized, I won't pursue this matter further. You may leave now."
The man seemed taken aback by Brooklyn's easy acquiescence. He swallowed nervously and asked cautiously, "Dr. Mitchell, are you truly not going to hold us accountable?"
Brooklyn smiled and replied, "What's the matter? Would you prefer if I continued to hold you accountable?"
"No, that's not what I meant. Dr. Mitchell, we're truly grateful that you're not holding us responsible. Thank you, Dr. Mitchell. Thank you!"
As the man expressed his gratitude, the dozens of people behind him also apologized one by one. Their apologies echoed throughout the hall for a long time.
Brooklyn thought, 'Isn't this scene a bit overblown?'
She had witnessed people causing disturbances in hospitals and had seen people apologize. But such a large-scale apology was a first for Brooklyn.
And it wasn't just Brooklyn; even the seasoned hospital director George was witnessing such a spectacle for the first time.
Reporters swarmed Brooklyn, thrusting microphones in her direction.
"Dr. Mitchell, a few days ago, you were deeply troubled by the behavior of these people. Why can you so easily accept their apology today?"
"Dr. Mitchell, do you have any comments on their egregious behavior causing disruption in the hospital?"
