Chapter 473 Just One Dead Person
Bianca's sarcasm cut through the air like a knife, leaving Brandon no room to save face. Her cold, proud expression was a mix of provocation and disdain, always composed and indifferent.
This irked Brandon, who was usually at ease around women. He snapped his notebook shut, adjusted his suit, and with a slightly cocky smile, sauntered over to Bianca. He leaned one hand against the door frame, his upper body slightly leaning down, trapping Bianca in the space confined by his shadow. As he leaned in, his fingers slowly traced the door. "Ms. Gomez, you seem to enjoy taking risks. I can tell you're a very bold woman. I like bold women, especially those who are bold in front of me."
Bianca hooked a finger around Brandon's tie, letting her slender finger slide down inch by inch. "Mr. Hernandez, I am indeed quite bold, but my time is limited. I won't waste it on a playboy. Since Mr. Hernandez has finished his work, I'll see you tomorrow."
With that, Bianca turned and walked away, her long legs carrying her swiftly down the hallway until she disappeared from sight.
Brandon remained in his previous posture, not quite processing how quickly she had moved. By the time he stood up straight and looked in the direction she had gone, he was smiling with amusement. "Bianca, this woman is quite interesting."
Brooklyn emerged from the operating room after nine o'clock at night. After changing her clothes, she saw an unread text message on her phone.
"I'm waiting for you in the parking lot. Let's meet tonight."
The sender was Bianca, and the message had been sent half an hour ago.
Brooklyn glanced at the darkening sky outside. It looked like it was going to rain.
Brooklyn called Bianca back, worried that she might have left. The phone barely rang once before it was answered.
"Brooklyn, are you done?"
"You haven't left?"
"No, I'm waiting for you."
"Okay. I'll be right there."
Brooklyn walked quickly, leaving Zach, who wanted to discuss a patient's follow-up care, behind. He watched her enter the elevator.
Arabella stepped in front of Zach. "Dr. Carter, is there something I can pass on for you?"
Zach smiled slightly, his refined face showing some post-surgery fatigue. "No, it's nothing. Go home."
Brooklyn reached the parking lot, and Bianca honked her car horn.
"Brooklyn, get in."
Once in Bianca's car, Brooklyn asked, puzzled, "What's so urgent that you had to come find me this late?"
Brooklyn rubbed her forehead, feeling tired, especially her eyes, which were easily strained from the recent surge in surgeries.
Seeing her exhaustion, Bianca shook her head. "You know, you could totally cut back on work or even quit. I mean, you're Sebastian's wife now. Why push yourself so hard?"
Brooklyn leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes to rest. "It's not just a job for me. It's about saving lives and making a difference."
Bianca rolled her eyes. "Alright, I get it. You're a workaholic. Anyway, I wanted to show you something. I think you need to see this."
Brooklyn took a stack of photos from Bianca and flipped through them. Her tired eyes suddenly focused, brightening like a lit torch. "Where did you get these?"
The photos were clearly taken secretly, showing Susie, Megan, Jennifer, and Karen, all in various disguises, meeting with some shady-looking individuals.
"That's not important. What's important is that I thought you'd like them. What you do with them is up to you..." Bianca sighed, looking at Brooklyn with concern. "Brooklyn, I don't get why you've been doing what you've been doing lately."
Brooklyn put the photos in her bag. "Hmm?"
Bianca decided to be blunt. "You know Megan kidnapped you and hurt you repeatedly. Now that you have the chance to let her rot in prison, why did you use half of the Turner Group's assets to get her out?"
"That woman doesn't deserve your mercy. Aren't you afraid she'll come back stronger to hurt you again? Honestly, I was really confused and a bit angry when I saw the online video being deleted."
Brooklyn's eyes sparkled with a smile. "What Megan did to me is enough to make her die a hundred times, but I can't let her die now. If she dies, public opinion about me will change."
"Now? You mean the online support for you and the criticism of Megan?"
"Yes. By being magnanimous towards Megan, I've gained public support, which is beneficial for the Mitchell Group's recovery. I almost destroyed the Mitchell Group with my softness before. Now, I need to rebuild it. That's one reason."
"Secondly, with the Turner Group's shares, I can help him. No matter what happens to him in the future, he won't be left in a difficult situation."
Brooklyn's voice slowed, her tone low but strong. Bianca didn't quite understand.
"You mean Sebastian? How could he end up in such a situation? He's Sebastian, a legend in the business world."
Brooklyn sighed. "A legend? There are only people in this world. People face changes. Who can guarantee smooth sailing?"
Like her father, her adoptive parents in Averlake, and all the giants who fell overnight in chaos.
She wanted to be his support, a pillar strong enough to hold him up at any time.
Bianca was puzzled but chose to understand. "Alright, but you don't plan to let Megan off the hook, do you?"
"Of course not. Acquiring the Turner Group is just my first step. Everything Megan did to me, I'll make sure she pays for it. When the Mitchell Group is back on its feet..."
She left the sentence hanging.
Bianca said, "But what about Jennifer and Brian? What they did to you... You're not going to let that slide, are you? Even though they're Sebastian's parents, their attitude towards you was outrageous."
Brooklyn rubbed her brow, feeling troubled. "Brian looks down on my background and wants to kick me out of the Kingsley family. Of course, I'm angry, but..." Brooklyn sighed. "He's still Sebastian's father."
"Damn it! Can you even call him a father? Using his son's happiness as a bargaining chip—what a jerk! I wish I could shoot him for you!"
Bianca angrily pounded the steering wheel.
Brooklyn remained calm. "I used to feel inferior in front of Sebastian, so Brian's words could hurt me. But not anymore. Instead, Brian's status can help me."
"You... have a plan?"
"Yes, and about Jennifer, I want to know what exactly she dislikes about me and why she keeps trying to stop me and Sebastian. This woman has secrets. Or maybe the person in these photos can give me some clues."
Bianca understood most of it but was still dissatisfied. "Brooklyn, I don't want to see them flaunting their power in front of you. I don't want those who hurt you to go unpunished. And Piper, why don't you just get rid of her? What's the point of keeping her around?"
Brooklyn opened her phone, pointing to the date. "Megan's engagement party is in ten days. By then, I'll give you answers to all your questions and frustrations."
"Alright! I'll wait for ten days. It's too late now. I'll take you home. Don't drive."
"Okay."
Just then, Brooklyn's phone rang, and Sebastian's name flashed on the screen. Bianca pretended not to see and turned her face away.
"I'm with Bianca. She's taking me home tonight. You don't need to pick me up."
Brooklyn quickly explained her situation, feeling that Sebastian didn't need to say anything.
So, Sebastian simply replied, "Okay."
As the car left the garage, Bianca raised an eyebrow and smiled. "With a man like Sebastian protecting you, taking down Megan or even the entire Turner and Rivera families would be a piece of cake. Brooklyn, you should give it a try."
Brooklyn, suddenly inspired, said, "Piper has a few jewelry stores in Aucester with a lot of private goods. Piper loves those stores. What do you think would happen if they all disappeared overnight?"
"You mean you want to buy them?" Bianca was used to Brooklyn's recent big purchases.
Brooklyn shook her head. "Buy? I don't even want to touch Piper's things. I trust your connections. Smash those stores. Make sure I don't see anything I don't want to see."
Bianca's eyes lit up with a mischievous grin. "Consider it done. Those stores won't know what hit them."
Bianca perked up. "Alright! From the way you put it, it sounds like you're playing with them, then finishing them off when you're bored."
"Why spell it out, Ms. Gomez?"
"Haha!"
The rain started to pour, the black car moving through the streetlights, the rain sweeping the world. Under Bianca's skilled driving, they arrived at the villa.
Before getting out of the car, they saw a tall figure in casual clothes holding a black umbrella on the steps. Even through the rain, he looked so good it was hard to look away.
Sebastian opened the car door, shielding Brooklyn's head and pulling her into his arms to keep her dry. He leaned down, his voice polite but distant. "Thank you, Ms. Gomez."
Bianca nodded and smiled. "You're welcome."
Brooklyn said, "It's late. Why don't you stay the night and leave tomorrow?"
"Me?" Bianca's bright eyes smiled mischievously. "Wouldn't that be inconvenient? A third wheel in your private time."
And judging by Sebastian's expression, if she stayed, she might be in big trouble later.
Without further ado, Bianca's car disappeared into the rain.
Sebastian held Brooklyn's shoulder, feeling sorry for her exhaustion. "You must be tired."
"I was a bit tired earlier, but seeing you, I'm not tired anymore." She leaned into him, smiling dependently.
Sebastian frowned slightly. "I prepared a late-night snack for you. I'll join you."
"Okay!"
The rain howled, the wind blowing the scent of flowers into the room.
Just then, Sebastian's phone rang.
Brooklyn looked up at him. "Why aren't you answering?"
Sebastian turned the phone away, not looking at it. "Let's eat first."
Brooklyn thought anyone calling Sebastian this late must have an urgent matter, so she picked up his phone and saw a landline number.
"I'll answer it for you."
Sebastian didn't respond. Brooklyn unlocked the phone and put it on speaker. Before she could speak, the person on the other end spoke hastily.
"Mr. Kingsley, Valerie is dead!"
Brooklyn's fork slipped, almost dropping onto the plate, while the man across from her showed no emotion, impatiently saying, "Got it."
He hung up the phone.
Brooklyn swallowed. "Valerie is dead. Don't you want to ask about it?"
Sebastian reached across the table, touching her head. "She's irrelevant. Don't let it ruin your appetite."
"What? Someone is dead! And it is irrelevant to you? Mr. Kingsley, you're quite detached."
Hearing about a death on a rainy night made Brooklyn feel uneasy. After all, Valerie had been fine not long ago, and now she was suddenly dead. It was hard to accept.
"She should have died long ago. Every extra day she lived was a gift from my wife. My wife is too generous. Even heaven couldn't stand it."
