Chapter 447 The Surgical Specialist and the Workplace Newcomer
"Scarlett, your new assistants are here." someone reminded.
"Alright, let them in."
With permission granted, Arabella and Jake walked into Brooklyn's office. Arabella was dressed in a suit, which added a touch of maturity to her somewhat youthful appearance.
However, her black-framed glasses always gave her a student-like vibe.
Jake, on the other hand, was casually dressed in sportswear, exuding the same carefree attitude he had during the interview.
Brooklyn announced, "From now, you both will be on a three-month probation period. During this time, if our collaboration doesn't go well, I will dismiss you. If it goes well, congratulations, you will officially become my assistants."
Arabella beamed at her idol, "Scarlett, don't worry, I will work very hard! Absolutely!"
Jake just gave a faint smile, "Of course, maybe someone could even take your place."
However, Brooklyn showed indifference to Jake's provocation, "Good, anyone without ambition is not worth keeping. My position is always open to your challenge, waiting for the day you replace me."
Arabella sneered at Jake, "Hey, don't you think you're being too much? It's only the first day, and you're already talking big. Be careful you don't even make it through the probation period."
Jake responded to her accusation with a smile, "We'll see if I make it or not."
"Well, I'll be waiting to beat you! Get ready!" Arabella bit her lower lip. 'Just you wait, I have plenty of ways to deal with you!'
Brooklyn tapped the table, "Alright, Arabella, Jake, go to the next office for the handover. If you have any questions, come to me anytime."
"Okay."
"Got it."
As Arabella and Jake left the office, Brooklyn shook her head. The two assistants she had hired were certainly quite unique.
At that moment, the phone on Brooklyn's desk rang.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Brooklyn, do you have a moment? There's a patient that needs your attention." It was Zach's voice.
"Alright."
Brooklyn grabbed her stethoscope and hurried out. Her footsteps were so rushed that her high heels made a noise against the floor. As she passed the adjacent office, Arabella and Jake happened to see her hurried figure.
Arabella muttered to herself in confusion, "Even the goddess has moments of urgency?"
But what could make the goddess so anxious?
Brooklyn rushed to the emergency room. Zach had just finished performing emergency cardiac resuscitation on the patient. The monitors showed the patient's blood pressure and heart rate, indicating a very critical condition with a high risk of death.
Brooklyn asked, "Dr. Carter, what's the situation?"
Hearing her voice, Zach took off his stethoscope and hung it around his neck, "It's a special case. The patient was already in shock when brought in. He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with severe congenital heart defects, leading to serious blood supply issues. His entire artery is already aged, but the patient is only thirty-nine years old."
Brooklyn glanced at the case file, her eyes fixed on the diagnosis, "Traditional treatment methods won't work."
Zach agreed, "Exactly, we need to come up with the best surgical plan for him. The patient is still young; without thorough treatment, there will be endless troubles in the future."
Brooklyn nodded, "I understand. Let's move the patient to the observation room first. Dr. Carter, let's have a meeting with the surgical team."
Zach walked out of the emergency room with Brooklyn, "By the way, I heard your new assistants have arrived. How are they? Satisfied?"
Brooklyn couldn't help but smile and shake her head, "Arabella and Jake's medical skills are yet to be tested, but their personalities are quite strong. You'll see soon enough."
Zach also smiled, "In that case, I really need to meet them. Standing out among thousands of people means they are exceptional—it's understandable to have a bit of a unique personality."
Arabella went downstairs to buy coffee, holding a cup in each hand as she went back upstairs. She was thinking about the treatment plan for the special case Scarlett mentioned and wondering if the coffee she bought for her was to her taste.
Lost in thought, she rushed out as soon as the elevator stopped.
She moved too quickly, and one cup of coffee spilled all over the person waiting for the elevator!
Arabella snapped out of it, "Oh! I'm sorry!" She apologized repeatedly and quickly looked up.
In front of her stood Zach in a white coat, his gentle features full of a good-natured smile. His sharp eyebrows and soothing eyes made him look like a noble prince from a medieval castle.
There was such a handsome doctor in the hospital!
Arabella sneaked a glance at the name tag on his pocket and saw the name.
Zach.
Could this be the renowned cardiac surgeon Zach?
Oh my! He wasn't the middle-aged man she had imagined but a bona fide handsome guy!
Aucester Hospital was amazing!
After a moment of daze, Arabella quickly took out a tissue to help Zach wipe off the coffee, "I'm sorry, Dr. Carter, I didn't see you just now. I'm really sorry."
Zach stopped her and brushed off the large coffee stain on his white coat, "It's alright, you go ahead."
Zach's words left Arabella stunned on the spot!
Oh my! How could his voice be so gentle? Hearing him speak felt like a gentle breeze caressing her face, with each word carrying the warm comfort of a spring breeze.
His demeanor, his refinement, his voice—every aspect of him exuded a sense of perfection.
Arabella almost got crazy. "I'm really sorry, Dr. Carter. This coffee is for you as an apology. You must accept it!"
Zach smiled slightly but frowned, "No need, you drink it yourself."
"No way, I spilled coffee on your clothes. You must take it! Dr. Carter, why don't you change your clothes now? I'll wash them for you, and I promise they'll be spotless."
Zach was a bit taken aback by Arabella's excessive enthusiasm and quickly refused, "No need, I have urgent matters to attend to. I'll be going now."
With that, Zach hurried into the elevator, looking at the coffee stain on his clothes and thinking about Arabella's enthusiasm. He could only shake his head and sigh.
Were all young girls like this nowadays? Quite scary.
Arabella returned to the office with a heart pounding wildly, her face still flushed with girlish fantasies.
Jake looked up and saw Arabella's expression, smirking coldly, "Looks like you've got a crush or something!"
Arabella glared at Jake, "How can there be such a big difference between men? The difference between you and Dr. Carter is more than just a level! Dr. Carter is a true gentleman, elegant, noble, and well-mannered. As for you, pardon my bluntness, all I see in you is arrogance!"
Jake shrugged, flipping through the case files, and gave her a sidelong glance, "Thanks for the honest feedback."
"You're welcome!"
As Brooklyn left the ward, she came face to face with Piper.
"Dr. Rivera, what a coincidence." Brooklyn nodded slightly, her eyes half scrutinizing, half mocking.
Piper snorted, "Coincidence? I don't think so. Brooklyn, to be honest, I don't want to see you at all."
"Oh? But I want to meet Dr. Rivera. Every time I see you, I feel great and my mood improves. Dr. Rivera, you're a cardiology expert, why don't you explain why that is?" Brooklyn smiled.
Piper clenched her medical file, "Brooklyn, what are you gloating about? Do you think your sarcasm is clever? You're so childish!"
Brooklyn took a step forward, her high heels clicking on the floor, closing the distance between her and Piper. Her sudden approach made Piper's back stiffen.
Brooklyn's eyes gleamed with mockery, her voice low but enough to make Piper uncomfortable, "Piper, I could change my approach, but I'm afraid you couldn't handle it. After all, inciting someone to commit murder is a crime that could keep you in prison for years."
Piper's face turned pale, her eyes narrowing, "Brooklyn, do you have evidence? Be careful, or I'll sue you for defamation!"
Brooklyn stepped back, restoring the previous distance, "Go ahead! I'm ready anytime. But before that, you'd better be polite to me. If I get upset one day, I can not only make sure you never practice medicine again but also ruin your reputation forever."
Piper glared at Brooklyn, her face white with anger, but she couldn't say anything more.
Just then, a doctor passed by, and they nodded in greeting. Brooklyn smiled, "Dr. Rivera! Stay healthy!"
Turning away, Brooklyn clenched her fist. 'Piper, you'd better not let me catch any evidence, or I'll make sure you spend your life in prison!'
Given Sebastian's influence, putting Piper behind bars wouldn't have been hard. However, Brooklyn insisted on doing it the right way—with undeniable proof.
"Hey! Brooklyn!"
Brooklyn hadn't reached her office yet when she saw Quinn leaning against the door, waiting for her.
Brooklyn frowned, "What are you doing here? Not feeling well?"
Quinn shrugged, "No, I'm here to check the finances. Being a financial manager is such a hassle. Brooklyn, I'm really tired. Is there any reward for me?"
Brooklyn smiled faintly, "Sure, penicillin, erythromycin, adrenaline—what do you want? I'll inject as much as you need, on me, for free."
Quinn silently facepalmed, "Alright! I knew I couldn't joke with you. You take jokes too seriously. How could I waste such precious medicine?"
"What's up? Why are you here?" Brooklyn opened the door and invited Quinn to sit.
Quinn sat down on a swivel chair, "Brooklyn, I just saw Zach. You two are back in the same hospital. Why do I feel a bit weird about it?"
"That's because you're overthinking. Zach and I are just colleagues now, and friends, nothing more." Brooklyn said, nodding her chin, "What do you want to drink?"
"What do you have?"
Brooklyn shrugged, "I'll ask my assistant." She dialed the internal line, "Arabella, come in."
Quinn laughed, "Brooklyn, you're doing well! You even have an assistant to serve tea and water! Your treatment is quite good!"
Arabella knocked on the door, "Scarlett, what can I do for you?"
Quinn squinted, finding the voice somewhat familiar.
