Chapter 497 Sudden Incident
Quinn ruffled Arabella's hair. "Are you drunk?"
Arabella grinned, her smile wide and carefree. "Yeah, I'm drunk."
Quinn muttered under his breath. "Damn, I shouldn't have even asked. You've had enough. Let me take you home."
Arabella had indeed had a bit too much to drink, but it was just beer. She wasn't completely wasted. She looked up at the sky, then back at Quinn. "You're taking me home?"
"Of course. You're in no shape to get home by yourself, and you live way out there. What if someone tries to kidnap you on the way? Even though you're not exactly a supermodel and probably don't have much cash on you, you never know when some idiot might come along."
Arabella spat at him. "Damn it, can't you be nice for once? When did I become so pathetic? Am I really that ugly?"
Quinn steadied her, preventing her from stumbling. "Alright, alright, you're amazing. You're every thug's dream. I'm just trying to be nice and take you home. So, where do you live?"
Arabella was about to give him an address when a thought struck her. "How do you know I live far away? Have you been stalking me?"
"Stalk you? I saw you get on a long-distance bus at the station last time. That bus doesn't stop in between."
What?
Arabella finally remembered the incident. Damn, she hadn't realized the misunderstanding had such a lasting impact. "Haha, yeah, my place is pretty far. But Mr. Kingsley, you've had a drink too. You can't drive."
"Damn it!"
He realized she was right. "I'll call you a cab."
Arabella suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach. "Wait, I think something I ate isn't sitting right. My stomach hurts."
She collapsed to the ground, clutching her stomach, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. Damn it, she'd eaten at street vendors so many times, why did her stomach have to act up today?
"You... you always brag about how great street food is. How's that working out for you now? Hurts, doesn't it?"
Quinn quickly knelt down to check on her. Under the streetlight, her face was pale, and sweat was dripping from her forehead. He was scared out of his wits and couldn't bring himself to scold her anymore. "I'm taking you to the hospital!"
Arabella was in too much pain to stand up straight. She groaned weakly. "It hurts... I can't move. Oh, it hurts so much, my stomach..."
Seeing her condition, Quinn didn't waste any more time. He scooped her up and ran towards the main road. "Hang in there, we're going to the hospital."
Arabella, her forehead veins bulging from the pain, curled up in Quinn's arms, her whole body convulsing. "It's probably acute enteritis. I won't die, but it hurts like hell."
"Damn it, are you an idiot? Don't say you won't die when you're in this much pain. Save your strength and keep quiet. We'll be at the hospital soon."
Quinn flagged down a cab and had the driver take them to the nearest hospital.
Meanwhile, Zach and Ophelia returned to the restaurant, but there was no sign of the woman who was supposed to be his blind date. After looking around, Zach concluded that she had left, unable to wait any longer.
Ophelia ordered food and looked at Zach, who seemed out of sorts. "Hey, Zach, can you not look so miserable while eating? This is a restaurant, not a funeral. You're having dinner with me, not offering sacrifices, OK?"
Zach was taken aback by Ophelia's bluntness. Usually composed and polite, Zach found himself repeatedly surprised by Ophelia today. "Miss Montague, do you always talk like this, or is it just with me?"
Ophelia shrugged innocently. "Zach, you're overthinking it. Why would I target you? What's so special about you? Didn't you lose to me in Taekwondo just now?"
Zach's elegant surgeon's hands were clasped together as he sat upright. "It seems we might work well together. To be honest, I'm not interested in women like you."
Ophelia played with her knife and fork. "That's great. I'm not interested in boring, rigid, humorless doctors either. But this works out. We can collaborate, and if you meet someone suitable, let me know."
Zach appreciated her straightforwardness. "Sure, Miss Montague. If you meet someone you like, let me know, and I'll wish you well."
"Thanks!"
The food arrived, and Ophelia ate quickly but with a certain grace. However, her chewing was a bit too rough to be considered polite. She knew her eating habits weren't the best and smiled at Zach. He, on the other hand, cut his steak slowly and elegantly, each movement smooth and refined, like a tutorial on dining etiquette. Ophelia's face darkened. "Zach, you eat so slowly. It's a waste of time."
Zach replied, "Chewing slowly aids digestion. Eating too fast can cause indigestion. It's not good for your health, Miss Montague. You should be mindful of that."
"If cops ate like you, thieves would have long escaped, and criminals would be gone!"
"I'm not a cop," Zach replied calmly, his slow eating contrasting sharply with Ophelia's frantic pace.
Halfway through the meal, Zach's phone rang. It was the hospital's emergency room.
"Dr. Carter, come to the hospital quickly! The patient on the twelfth floor has gone into cardiac arrest! It's critical!"
Zach's expression changed instantly. "The twelfth floor? The patient who fell?"
The surgery had been successful. How could this happen?
"Yes! The patient suddenly went into cardiac arrest. We don't know why. Please come back quickly!"
"Alright!"
Zach pulled out some cash and placed it on the table. "There's an emergency at the hospital. I have to go."
Ophelia quickly finished the food in her mouth, grabbed her bag, and followed him. "I'm coming with you!"
"Why are you getting involved?"
"The patient's condition is urgent. Can you drive fast enough? Take my car. I guarantee we'll be at the hospital in fifteen minutes!"
He thought for a moment. "Alright."
Ophelia's skills as a police officer were no joke. Her white Mercedes sped down the road like a silver snake, weaving through traffic and leaving cars behind. Despite his concern for the patient, Zach was impressed by Ophelia's driving.
After a series of sharp turns and lane changes, the car stopped in front of Aucester Hospital. Zach jumped out, with Ophelia right behind him.
"Dr. Carter, the patient is in the emergency room. Dr. Moore and Ryan are trying to save him, but it's not looking good," a nurse reported, her face pale with fear.
This patient was special. If something happened, it would be a big deal.
The patient's family hadn't signed the consent form. Brooklyn's name was on it.
"Damn it!"
Zach cursed and ran into the elevator, forgetting Ophelia was still with him.
Left behind, Ophelia muttered, "Didn't expect Zach to be so manly when he curses."
A nurse nearby, seeing the beautiful woman in a long dress, mumbled, "When did Dr. Carter get a girlfriend?"
Oh no, this was going to break a lot of hearts at Aucester Hospital.
Zach reached the floor, changed into scrubs, and rushed into the operating room. The situation was critical, every second counting.
Seeing Zach, a sweating Brycen looked relieved. "Dr. Carter, you're finally here!"
Zach examined the patient, and his already tense nerves tightened further. He checked the patient's heart and eyelids. "How long has it been?"
"Thirty minutes. No heartbeat, no pulse. We tried emergency cardiac resuscitation, but there's no response. The patient seems..."
Dead.
Brycen didn't finish, but everyone understood. Zach's eyes darkened, and he closed them briefly. "He's already dead."
Brycen and Ryan looked at Zach. "Dr. Carter, please try again. You and Dr. Mitchell spent over ten hours on this surgery. If something happens now, it would be such a waste!"
Zach removed his mask, his gaze weary. "He's confirmed dead. I can't bring him back to life."
"This..."
Zach looked at the patient. "What were his symptoms before he lost consciousness? Who was taking care of him?"
Dr. Moore replied, "Nurse Anneliese Winslow. The patient was in a coma after surgery, but his heartbeat and pulse were normal. She said she went to the bathroom, and when she came back, he was like this..."
Zach frowned. "Maybe the surgery failed."
Ryan asked cautiously, "Should we tell Dr. Mitchell? She's in the ward upstairs, but her husband is there, too."
Whoever went would probably get punched.
Zach shook his head. "No, don't tell her yet. Where's the patient's family?"
Ryan sighed. "They probably just got the news. How do we explain this to them?"
Zach nodded. "I'll explain. Move him out."
"Alright."
Ophelia finally found the floor where Zach was operating. As she arrived, she heard wailing and shouting in the hallway. It was chaotic.
Ophelia frowned. "What the hell is going on?"
