Chapter 271 Leaning into His Embrace
Sebastian asked, "Will you come back? No matter where you go, no matter what you do, will you come back?"
Brooklyn's lips trembled, and the words stuck in her throat. Her eyes glistened with tears that she struggled to hold back. She forced herself to speak through her grief, "I..."
Sebastian suddenly raised a finger to her lips, silencing her. "I'll wait for you here, no matter how long it takes, until you come back."
His sudden gentleness caught her off guard. She bit her lip, and the tension in her body grew. She struggled to speak, "Sebastian, you should go to the hospital for a check-up in the next few days. It's good to have an annual check-up, to treat any illnesses and prevent future ones."
It seemed like a random comment.
But he agreed obediently, without resistance or argument. "Okay, if you go with me, I'll go."
Brooklyn bit her lip, trying to hold back her tears. Not wanting him to see her cry, she leaned into his embrace, burying her uncontrollable emotions in his arms. "Yeah," she murmured.
"What did you say?" Megan asked, bewildered. "Did Brooklyn actually say she won't be around for long in front of the media? So…"
Megan, propped up on the sofa with her hand resting protectively on her abdomen, struggled to contain her excitement, her eyes shining with barely masked enthusiasm.
Piper snorted. "She did say that, but Brooklyn isn't sick. She's not going anywhere soon."
Megan clenched her teeth in frustration. "Brooklyn, that bitch! Why won't she just die?"
"Well, I heard she's planning to go to Jabari," Piper drawled, her voice dripping with insinuation. "Megan, you know how places like Jabari are. People drop dead there every so often. It's a perfect place for someone like her to meet an untimely end."
Megan grasped her comb tightly, dragging it through her hair with deliberate strokes. "So, if she happens to die there, it won't be anyone's fault. Brooklyn certainly knows how to pick her spots!"
Piper lounged on the villa's swivel chair, her eyes narrowed with icy disdain. "Megan, Sebastian is determined to be with Brooklyn. He humiliated you in public and didn't even care about the Turner family. Even if Brooklyn were to die, do you really think you'd have a chance?"
Megan sneered, her voice dripping with both menace and jealousy. "Piper, once you fall for someone, you'll understand. Even if he doesn't have you in his heart, having him by your side is enough. I've invested five years in him, poured everything I had into that relationship. I can't let it all go to waste because of her."
"Megan, do you know why I'm helping you?"
Megan looked puzzled. In theory, if Brooklyn and Sebastian were together, it should have given her a shot at getting closer to Zach. Yet, here she was, going against that logic.
Piper said calmly, "There's a kind of person who, no matter how hard you try, you'll only ever be chasing after. You can't have them, neither in heart nor body. Since the pain is inevitable, I'd rather share it than suffer alone."
At Kingsley Villa, the sound of shattered vase echoed from the grand study on the second floor. Brian, fuming with rage, grabbed the phone, determined to destroy the place if Sebastian didn't pick up.
"Sebastian! You need to come back right now!"
Sebastian had just returned to Bayside Villas, carefully placing Brooklyn on the bed, when he finally answered Brian's call on the ninth ring.
"Dad, what's going on?" Sebastian's tone was casual as he closed the bedroom door behind him and headed downstairs.
In a fit of fury, Brian hurled a stack of papers from his desk onto the floor, the clatter reverberating through the room.
"Get back here right now! You'd better give me a damn good explanation for what happened today!"
The anger in Brian's voice was palpable even through the phone. Sebastian knew he was in for a lecture if he returned.
"Didn't you see everything that happened? What more explanation do you want?"
"Sebastian, what gives you the right to defy the Turner family like that?!"
Sebastian tapped his forehead with his long fingers. "Dad, when did I ever need to seek approval from the Turner family for my decisions? Do you think it's the Kingsley family that's unable to handle the pressure from the Turners, or are you suggesting that our family needs to back down from them?"
The sound of something heavy being knocked over by Brian echoed through the line.
"Fine, let me be clear. The Kingsley family doesn't need to back down from the Turners. But, Sebastian, you're not in a position to make decisions for the Kingsley family just yet. We'll see how you handle tomorrow's board meeting!"
