Chapter 440 The Scheming Couple
Sebastian and Brooklyn left the auction in high spirits, walking out of the grand golden hall.
Sebastian interlocked his fingers tightly with Brooklyn's, feeling the touch of her ring through the gaps. Her soft hand seemed to meld into his, and he loved the feeling.
Brooklyn smiled slightly, glanced at the sky, and said, "Sebastian, we just walked out like this. I wonder what the others will think."
Sebastian returned her a loving smile, "Are you happy?"
Instead of answering, he asked her back, his eyes looking into hers, silently conveying a thousand words.
Brooklyn was a bit stunned. For a moment, she admitted she seemed to have fallen into his endless tenderness.
She nodded, her voice softer than usual, "Yes, I am happy."
Sebastian seemed to be immensely pleased with her affirmation. He playfully tapped her nose, "As long as you're happy, nothing else matters."
Brooklyn's smile widened, her eyes curving, "As expected, very much in line with Mr. Kingsley's domineering style."
Sebastian laughed heartily and held her hand even tighter. They strolled slowly, like a couple newly in love.
Then, Sebastian asked, "Why did you ask for Susie's hotel room address?"
Brooklyn's eyes glinted mischievously, "Oh, that? It's nothing. Besides, it's my sister and her husband's private matter. I don't need to explain it to Mr. Kingsley, do I?"
Her lack of explanation only made him think more. Naturally, with Sebastian's intelligence, he had probably guessed most of it.
Brooklyn countered, "Mr. Kingsley, you sure are patient. How could you just watch as someone else took the item I liked at the auction? You are my husband, after all."
The word "husband" easily touched a nerve in Sebastian, sparking a feeling of happiness.
Sebastian said, "Mrs. Kingsley, I remember you have enough money to buy everything at the auction. Besides, you said that women feel more justified spending their own money."
Brooklyn pouted, "You always have a point, Mr. Kingsley. Everything you say ends up supporting your side."
Just then, Brooklyn's phone rang.
She looked at the number on the screen and smiled, "Guess who it is."
Sebastian glanced at the sky and calmly remarked, "Judging by the time, it seems like it's lost and found time."
This made Brooklyn laugh heartily. He had seen through everything.
She answered the phone, "Kevin."
Kevin stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, straight and tall. Through the glass, he could see the night sky outside. He smiled gently, "Scarlett, where are you?"
Brooklyn and Sebastian exchanged glances, "Outside the venue. What's up?"
Kevin said, "I want to see you. There's something I think is better handed over in person. Is that convenient?"
Brooklyn smiled gently, without any awkwardness, "Of course, let's meet at the café across the street."
"Alright, wait for me. I'll be there soon."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Brooklyn put her phone in her handbag and turned to Sebastian, "Mr. Kingsley, I'm going to have coffee with someone. Want to join?"
Sebastian's clean, slender fingers played with a strand of her hair blown by the wind. He leaned in and looked at her radiant face, "You're inviting someone for coffee. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to join, especially since it's Kevin. I might affect him."
She suddenly laughed, saying everything without words.
"I'll wait for you in the car, just outside. Go ahead." Sebastian smiled.
Brooklyn nodded gently and obediently.
Sitting in the café, under the crystal lights, Brooklyn, in her gown, looked stunningly beautiful even without makeup. She held a spoon with her slender fingers, stirring her coffee but not drinking it.
Kevin, sitting opposite her, sipped his coffee, his eyes always on her. Though not lecherous, his gaze was a bit too eager.
His eyes shifted slightly to the dazzling ring on her ring finger. The exorbitant ring seemed perfectly matched to her, making the ring seem honored to be on her finger.
Brooklyn looked up and caught his gaze, "What do you want?"
Kevin smiled elegantly, "It's been a while. You look great, even more beautiful than when you left Averlake."
She responded gracefully, "Thank you, but I don't think you came here just to compliment me. What is it? Go ahead."
Kevin had anticipated her calmness but not her composure, making it hard to say what he had prepared. He decided to get straight to the point. "These are the auction items you liked. I'm giving them to you."
Brooklyn wasn't surprised, nor did she show any knowing wisdom. She simply said, "Oh, you bought these, so you should take them back to Averlake."
Kevin shook his head, "No, these are the items I bid on for you. A gentleman should fulfill a lady's wishes. Scarlett, I hope we can still be friends. There's nothing wrong with friends giving each other gifts. I hope you won't refuse."
He placed four gift boxes on the coffee table, each exquisitely wrapped, with contents worth several million dollars combined.
Brooklyn glanced at them briefly, "Kevin, these gifts are too expensive for friends, let alone mutual gifts. You give me such expensive gifts, but I'm afraid I can't give you anything in return."
Kevin chuckled softly, fine lines appearing at the corners of his eyes. His handsome and elegant face showed no trace of calculation or ulterior motives.
"I didn't expect a return gift when I gave you these. I didn't know what you liked before, so I never gave you anything. Now, I'm making up for that by giving you what you chose yourself. I just want you to be happy, with no other intentions. Can you believe me?"
He said so gently that if she hadn't known his schemes beforehand, she might have been fooled.
At this point, Brooklyn stopped being coy, "Thank you, Kevin. I hope you enjoy your time in Libertya. If you need any help, feel free to ask. If I can't do it, my husband probably can."
Yes, her husband. After tonight's proposal, she could finally acknowledge her relationship with Sebastian openly.
Kevin's grip on his coffee cup tightened slightly, but he maintained his smile, "Yes, if I need your... and your husband's help, I'll ask."
"Kevin, it's getting late. I should head home. If there's anything else, we can get in touch." Brooklyn didn't plan to stay long, nor did she want to give him a chance to say more.
Kevin nodded and didn't insist, "Your husband's waiting, isn't he?"
"Yes, he's waiting for me. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I've regained all my memories. You can call me Brooklyn from now on, but feel free to call me whatever you like."
Kevin wasn't surprised, "That's great."
Carrying items worth millions of dollars, Brooklyn walked out of the café without a backward glance.
Kevin watched her bright figure gradually fade away through the window, squinting his eyes as he set down his coffee cup.
Seeing Brooklyn approach, Sebastian took a few steps forward and took the items from her hands, his thin lips curving slightly, "Quite a haul, Mrs. Kingsley."
Brooklyn tilted her head, indicating it was just so-so.
Sebastian opened the passenger door, helped her in, and placed the items in the trunk before sitting down, "How was the coffee?"
Brooklyn shook her head, "I don't know. Who drinks coffee at night? But from the look on his face, it didn't seem to taste very good."
Sebastian's eyes gleamed with a smile, "You are smart."
Brooklyn leaned back in her seat, "Mr. Kingsley, the items your wife liked were given by Kevin. As my husband, how do you feel about that?"
She was deliberately teasing him.
Sebastian shrugged, "But I think I was helping him. As far as I know, this was a charity auction, and all the funds will go to charity. By giving him the opportunity to spend money, I was helping him support the poor. He should thank me."
Brooklyn laughed so hard her shoulders shook, "Sebastian, you really are scheming!"
Sebastian was quite pleased, "So, Mrs. Kingsley, what do you plan to do with these items?"
Kevin had given them to her, and she certainly wouldn't keep them for herself. Brooklyn was a serious germaphobe.
Brooklyn pouted, "Well, I remember you said you wanted to visit my parents in Averlake. As a son-in-law visiting for the first time, shouldn't you bring gifts? These four items are just what they like. So, Mr. Kingsley, I'll trouble you with that."
Sebastian nodded reluctantly, a smug smile playing on his lips, "Though it might seem a bit shabby for my status, no amount of money can buy your parents' approval. I can reluctantly accept."
Sebastian and Brooklyn exchanged glances, each calculating their own plans.
They really were becoming more and more compatible.
Then Brooklyn grabbed Sebastian's arm and glanced at his watch, "It seems about time."
Sebastian thought she was up to something, but she just used his wrist to check the time, making him laugh, "What do you mean?"
Brooklyn leaned back in her seat again and looked out the window, "Time for my dear sister to receive her gift! Mr. Kingsley, please drive. It seems we should head home too."
Sebastian started the car, and the black Rolls-Royce sped smoothly into the night.
As the car started, Sebastian's phone in the console lit up.
Brooklyn frowned, picked up his phone, and pouted, "Mr. Kingsley, it seems someone is looking for you."
Sebastian glanced at the contact and continued driving, "Really? I didn't know."
With that, he flipped the phone over, silencing the vibration.
He then took her hand, which was resting on the side, and gently squeezed it, not letting go.
Brooklyn smiled brightly. She saw clearly that the call had been from Brian.
