Chapter 177 Let Her Go!

"You guys heard it, right? Dr. Mitchell was rushed to the ER last night, and Dr. Carter personally treated her. I wonder what happened."

"Of course. I heard from someone in the ER that Dr. Carter carried Brooklyn into the resuscitation room yesterday with only one shoe on. Not sure if it's true."

"That doesn't sound real. The Vice Dean was wearing only one shoe, but I don't believe it. Yet, Dr. Carter really cares for Dr. Mitchell. How many female doctors' hearts has he broken?"

Piper, who happened to be passing by the duty station, heard the conversation among doctors and nurses clearly. She knew Brooklyn had taken leave but was unaware of what had happened.

The hospital was vast, and each department was busy enough. If it wasn't for idle gossip, who would care about what was happening elsewhere?

"Got nothing to do?"

Piper's chilly voice startled a few murmuring nurses, and the women around the duty station dispersed.

Piper took out her phone and called Zach.

In the ward, Zach saw the name flashing on his phone screen, and his eyebrows furrowed slightly. "Dr. Rivera."

He made the call in front of Brooklyn without hesitation.

"Dr. Carter, where are you? I have a form for medical equipment that needs your signature." Piper pointed at the table with her slender fingers, and her right index finger bent due to the force.

"You can leave it for tomorrow."

As he was about to hang up, Piper interrupted, "This needs confirmation tonight. Where are you? I'll come find you to get the signature so that I can clock out."

Zach checked the IV bag and said, "Okay, I'll meet you in the lobby."

Brooklyn quietly listened to him finish the call without saying a word.

"I'll be back in a moment. Don't sneak off." Instantly, his tone and expression changed, reverting to his gentle demeanor.

"Dr. Carter, go ahead. I'm fine." Brooklyn continued to reject, intentionally or not, but she couldn't bring herself to be harsh.

Zach signed the form, "Alright, it's late. Dr. Rivera, you can clock out."

Piper held the documents, "It's so late, Dr. Carter. Why are you still here?"

Zach put the pen in his pocket under his collar. "I still have patients."

"Dr. Carter, can we talk?" Piper took a step forward, smiling modestly and gently.

Zach put his hand in the large pocket of his white coat, a simple gesture showing a sense of distance.

"I..."

She only managed to say the first word when Zach's phone rang, an optional call.

"Sorry, I have something urgent here. Let's talk another day."

He answered the call, quickly walking away as he spoke on the phone.

Piper looked up at the bright lobby chandelier through the glass door. The hospital at night was quiet except for the emergency room, where people were still waiting.

Piper slowed her pace and followed Zach.

"Back so soon?"

Seeing Zach return, Brooklyn was a bit surprised.

"Nothing important. You've been fasting for over eight hours. Have something easy to digest for dinner. What do you prefer?"

Brooklyn couldn't tell if he was a doctor or a boyfriend.

"I'm not hungry. I've had enough from the IV." With so much fluid injected, she must be full.

"Being full from IV doesn't count. Tell me, what do you want to eat? If you want to get rid of me and leave here soon, you must eat well. Otherwise, I'll still be here tomorrow. It's up to you." Zach insisted.

Why did everyone want Brooklyn to make decisions? It was a choice she couldn't escape from, no matter what she decided.

"I'd like some oatmeal porridge." Oatmeal porridge was soft and mushy, which was the best food for Brooklyn, who was really hungry.

"Anything else? Porridge is hydrating." Zach said.

She thought for a moment, "A banana. Is that okay?"

Zach smiled, "Sure!"

Piper stood outside the door, looking through the glass and seeing the two inside laughing and talking, her fists clenched!

When Zach returned, he not only brought what Brooklyn wanted to eat but also bought chocolate to replenish her energy and, of course, his dinner.

She hadn't eaten, and he either.

In addition, he bought a bouquet of early summer gardenias.

As the gardenias entered the room, their delicate and refreshing fragrance filled the air, soothing the heart.

The bouquet, with its interplay of creamy white and pale yellow, exuded a girlish charm.

"How did you know I like gardenias?" Brooklyn asked.

Zach placed the flowers in a vase. "I just guess. I wasn't sure when I first arrived, but I could smell the scent of gardenias on you. Now, I know it."

She was speechless.

"Let's eat. You picked it, so you must finish it." Zach said in a coaxing tone, so comfortable and gentle that she couldn't refuse.

When she picked up a small spoonful and put it in her mouth, Brooklyn's tongue stung sharply!

She forgot about the injury on her tongue!

"What's wrong? Did you burn it?" Zach's voice was gentle and comforting, like a breath of fresh air.

"No, it's my tongue..." Brooklyn hesitated.

"Let me see your tongue."

The tall Zach leaned in close to the bedside to check Brooklyn's tongue, his side profile blocking most of her figure. From a distance, it looked like he was kissing her.

Sebastian's hand paused on the door handle as he prepared to open it, struck as if by lightning!

In an instant, Sebastian forcefully swung open the door and took a large step forward.

"Let her go!"
