Chapter 399 Awaiting the Future, Double Happiness

Faced with his sudden confession and the declaration that nearly made her so frustrated she could spit blood, Scarlett was left speechless.

'Has Sebastian been possessed by a ghost? Should I perform an exorcism on him or something?' She thought.

Faced with his deeply affectionate gaze that seemed to seep into his very bones, Scarlett uncooperatively extended her arm, her pale fingers touching his forehead in a standard doctor-patient diagnostic pose, and remarked, "No fever. Could it be that your brain is malfunctioning?"

Her sarcasm and provocation now seemed to him like playful antics from his beloved wife. No matter what she did, as long as he thought about the fact that she was Brooklyn, he could accept it all and even relish it.

So Sebastian continued to smile, wanting to give her all the smiles he hadn't shown in the past two years! "Yes, there is indeed a serious internal problem. As a senior expert in cardiology, Scarlett, why don't you take a look? Is there any cure for my lovesickness?"

Scarlett squinted her watery eyes. "So, Mr. Kingsley, your deep affection for your wife is truly touching and admirable."

He smiled, waiting to hear what she would say next.

"Of course, I have deep affection for my wife. It's only natural for a couple."

Their conversation seemed to involve Brooklyn, but Sebastian was directly treating Scarlett as Brooklyn. Scarlett, however, couldn't yet sense his deep love and hidden warmth, all of which were solely for her.

Scarlett pursed her lips. "You're thinking about your wife, yet you're here pouring your heart out to me. Mr. Kingsley, you are truly broad-minded."

She leaned back on the sofa, almost being pulled off by him earlier. Now, half of her body was hanging on the edge of the sofa, and if she wasn't careful, she would fall right onto his half-squatting thigh.

How could his legs not be numb after squatting for so long?

His long-lost wife was right in front of him, and everything seemed wonderful to Sebastian. Even the air was sweet—well, not quite, as it was mixed with the pungent smell of roses!

"That's right, I'm not only broad-minded and passionate, but I also have a tendency to fall for others easily. You just heard me—I want to be your husband."

That domineering tone and irresistible aura, as if he were an emperor?

Scarlett didn't accept his words but didn't rush to fall out with him either. "Indeed, Mr. Kingsley is a broad-minded and passionate man. You think of your deceased wife, keep an eye on me at home, and have a fiancée waiting to marry you outside. You have such good luck with women!"

Sebastian enjoyed her sarcastic remarks, feeling as if his ears were being caressed by a spring breeze. She was Brooklyn! It was as if she had descended from heaven to earth once more!

Just hearing her voice brought Sebastian immense happiness.

Sebastian raised an almost imperceptible eyebrow, his eyes filled with a lingering smile. "Can I interpret that as jealousy?"

Scarlett neither confirmed nor denied it, raising her chin slightly and smiling brightly. "Then your comprehension skills are quite poor."

Sebastian sat down next to her, relieving the pressure on his knees and getting closer to her. "What about you? When will you break off your engagement with Kevin, who sends you roses every day?"

Scarlett, however, enjoyed it. To be honest, she found it quite interesting to spar with Sebastian, both verbally and mentally.

"He's my fiance. Why should I break off the engagement? Sebastian, do you really think your sudden interest will sway me? Don't be naive, okay? We're all adults now, don't be foolish."

She intended to marry Kevin. Instinctively, she felt that a man like Kevin was suitable for a lifelong companion, while Sebastian's brilliance and status were too overwhelming.

Sebastian twirled a strand of her hair around his finger, letting it slide through like silk. "Trust me. When you break off your engagement, let me know, and I'll do the same. I prefer double happiness to fighting alone."

He could now confirm Scarlett's identity, but as for Megan, it was just an engagement. He hadn't even given her an engagement ring. It was merely a ceremony where he made an appearance, and he left within two minutes.

He still remembered what he said when he left, "You invited me to play a part in your drama. Well, I can tell you that today's act will come at a cost someday."

He left, leaving behind Megan in her gown and the elders of the Kingsley and Turner families.

He described it like that? Scarlett looked at him and smiled. "Mr. Kingsley, you've mistaken me for Brooklyn and expressed the wrong feelings. Don't get lost on your way out."

She waved her hand dismissively, like a hostess seeing off a guest.

Undoubtedly, Scarlett was calmer, more intelligent, and sharper than Brooklyn.

Undoubtedly, Sebastian's current affection for Scarlett had been enhanced by Brooklyn's composure.

"Don't worry. Even if I get lost, I'll circle the globe and come back here." He smiled.

Scarlett was not used to Sebastian's deep affection today, it was too much for her to handle, challenging her emotional endurance.

Fortunately, as she pondered how to end the conversation, his phone rang.

Seeing the number, Sebastian directly hung up.

"Why didn't you answer the phone" She deliberately smiled indifferently, remaining an absolute bystander.

Sebastian frowned. "It was from a woman who makes you jealous."

So, the one calling Sebastian was Megan.

The phone rang a second time. This time, before Sebastian could hang up, she grabbed the phone and, with a guest-over-host smile, said, "You should answer your fiancée's call. If you can't win me over, don't end up with nothing with Mygan either. You won't even have a shoulder to cry on."

She deftly swiped to answer and held the phone to his ear, standing there with a seemingly kind and patient demeanor.

"Yes."

"Busy."

"Today?"

He glanced at his watch.

"Okay."

Could there be a simpler conversation? At least Scarlett hadn't seen one. In any case, the call ended.

Sebastian wasn't one to be overly clingy. With Scarlett, he couldn't take a hasty approach, so he stood up resolutely. "I have some business to attend to. Be safe at home."

Scarlett couldn't help but laugh, her shoulders shaking. "With the security system in Mr. Kingsley's villa being so good, what could possibly be unsafe?"

Sebastian casually pinched her nose with his long fingers. This gesture came naturally to him, but the feel under his fingers was different from when he pinched Brooklyn's nose. Scarlett's nose was more prominent. In his mind, he thought her plastic surgery was quite successful!

"No matter how safe a gilded cage is, it can't contain an ambitious wolf." He still thought of her as a cunning wolf? His memory was really good.

Scarlett picked up her book again and started flipping through it. "Mr. Kingsley, have a pleasant and sweet date!"

Sebastian's tall figure stood against the light, casting a deep shadow. Then he leaned down. "Ms. Taylor, enjoy your reading and gain some knowledge."

At the same time, he deftly corrected the book Scarlett was holding upside down.

Scarlett was silent, feeling embarrassed.

Sebastian left in a black suit, taking with him the masculine charm in the air, but his gradually receding steps left deeper ripples in Scarlett's heart.

She touched her lips, which he had just kissed.

His lips were like strong liquor, soft at first but with a powerful aftertaste. Only now did she feel her cheeks burning.

She shook her head, closed her eyes, and thought to herself.

Impossible, Sebastian must be joking! She had grown up in Averlake, and everyone around her could prove it! She couldn't possibly be Brooklyn.

She thought she would have to pass the time until dinner in boredom, but unexpectedly, her phone rang at six o'clock.

It was an unfamiliar American number, originating from Aucester. Although she didn't know who was calling, the almost identical string of numbers probably revealed the caller's status.

She firstly thought that it was from the hospital. Zach was probably on a flight back to the country, and the hospital might have some matters to discuss with her.

"Hello, who is this?" Scarlett asked tentatively, waiting for a response.

To her surprise, a man's laughter came from the other end, which was familiar, displeased, and reject.

She immediately recognized the voice as James.

"Ms. Taylor, do you feel any surprise for receiving my call?" On the other end, James was still smiling faintly, seemingly in a good mood.

But Scarlett didn't show any enthusiasm and said bluntly, "Mr. Rivera, what do you want? If it's the same as last time, I suggest you hang up now."

"Don't be hasty, Ms. Taylor. Today, I'm sincerely inviting you. I hope you'll give me a chance. I mean it, with no other intentions."

James stopped smiling as he spoke, becoming polite and humble. Even the usual arrogance and disdain he showed in public were completely restrained, making him look like a perfect gentleman from a noble family.

Scarlett frowned. "What are you inviting me for?"

James opened the door of his Maserati, walked to the main building of the villa, and placed his finger above the doorbell. Only then did he politely say, "Ms. Taylor, I apologize for offending you last time. Today, I want to apologize in person. I hope you can forgive me."

Scarlett couldn't help but laugh coldly. Had the playboy James suddenly turned over a new leaf? Was he actually apologizing to someone? Should she believe it or not?

"No need to apologize. I just hope nothing like that happens again. Mr. Rivera, if there's nothing else, I'm hanging up." With that, she was about to hang up the phone.

"Wait! You can hang up, but can you open the door first?"

Her gaze drifted to the double doors. Scarlett stood up, guessing that James's trick wasn't that simple. Sure enough, on the display screen, James stood straight on the steps, his handsome yet slightly roguish face in full view.

"What are you doing here?" She asked.

"Ms. Taylor, it's not proper to receive guests through a door. At least open the door first. I drove for nearly an hour to get here. Won't you at least offer me a drink of water?"

Scarlett raised an eyebrow and pursed her lips unconsciously. What game was James playing?

She opened one of the doors, put down her phone, and looked at James. " What do you want?"

James leaned his head inside, his thin lips curving into a teasing smile. "Since Sebastian isn't home, I won't come in. Otherwise, it wouldn't be good for Ms. Taylor's reputation. So, Ms. Taylor, could you step into my car? I have something to show you."

Scarlett crossed her arms and laughed lightly. "It's inappropriate to enter a house, but it's appropriate to enter a car? Just say it here."

James smiled wryly. "To be honest, I want to invite Ms. Taylor into the car to see something. I promise you won't regret it, and I absolutely won't be disrespectful."

Scarlett was skeptical. "Mr. Rivera, lying to me won't do you any good."
