Chapter 487 Please Help Me
Arabella leaned closer to Brooklyn's desk, her hands tucked into the pockets of her white coat. She licked her lips, trying to set the mood before asking, "Dr. Mitchell, are there any upcoming assignments outside the hospital? Last time, I didn't get to team up with Dr. Carter. Next time, could you pair us together?"
Brooklyn tapped Arabella's face lightly with her slender fingers. "No outside assignments for now. The hospital is still dealing with the fallout from Dr. Rivera's scandal. But if you like Dr. Carter, I suggest you tell him directly."
Arabella's head drooped, and she mumbled, "I'm too scared. Dr. Carter seems so gentle and kind, but that's exactly why I'm afraid. If I confess and he doesn't feel the same, we might not even be friends anymore. I don't want him avoiding me at the hospital."
Brooklyn chuckled, recalling their past interactions. "Then wait a bit. But Arabella, have you finished your current work? How's the preparation for the surgery on the patient in room 20? The surgery is the day after tomorrow, and Dr. Carter is the lead surgeon."
"Dr. Carter is the lead? I thought it was you."
Brooklyn kept a straight face as she replied, "From your tone, who do you actually prefer?"
"Dr. Mitchell, don't try to trick me. Fine, I'll get right on it! Thank you, Dr. Mitchell!"
Arabella turned to leave, but as she opened the door, she was startled by a tall, imposing figure standing outside. The intense presence of the man made her look up in surprise.
"Mr. Kingsley, you're here," she stammered.
Sebastian nodded and stepped past her into the office.
Arabella clutched her chest as she left the office, closing the door behind her and finally exhaling the breath she had been holding. She was almost faint with shock.
Sebastian was not someone to be taken lightly.
"What brings you here? It's work hours, isn't it?" Brooklyn asked, glancing at her watch.
Sebastian sat down across from her. "I'm here for a check-up."
Brooklyn's face showed concern as she grabbed his hand to examine him. "What's wrong? Let me see."
Sebastian was taken aback by her swift actions. "I'm just kidding. Who curses themselves with illness? Are you crazy, Mr. Kingsley?"
Sebastian straightened up. "I'm genuinely worried. A doctor at Aucester Hospital was caught illegally selling organs. As the leader, I can't sleep or eat well, so I came to see you."
Brooklyn's expression turned sarcastic. "Mr. Kingsley, you really know how to act. Others might believe you, but I don't. I know who's behind Piper's downfall."
Brooklyn's calm reaction reassured Sebastian.
"Piper won't be bothering you for a while. You can work at the hospital without worry."
"Did you come here just to tell me that? You could have called. No need to come in person."
Sebastian checked the time. "I have a meeting in thirty minutes. I wanted to see you in person. Call me if you need anything."
Brooklyn walked him to the door. "I was fine before, and I'll be fine now. Don't worry."
Sebastian pulled her close, kissing her gently on the lips and forehead. "I don't want anything to happen to you again."
Brooklyn sighed at his overprotectiveness. "Alright, go back to work. Next time, just call."
He released her, looking into her eyes. "Can I hug you over the phone? Can I kiss you?"
Brooklyn was speechless and pushed him out the door. "Go on, hurry!"
Sebastian's tall figure walked to the elevator, drawing the attention of several nurses. Brooklyn noticed their admiration.
Sebastian was always the center of attention, which was a bit stressful.
As soon as Sebastian left, Brooklyn's phone rang. The caller ID showed an unknown number. She answered, "Hello, who is this?"
There was a brief pause before the caller spoke. "Ms. Mitchell, do you have time to meet?"
The voice was familiar, but she didn't recognize the number. "Mr. Rivera?"
James, sounding frustrated, replied, "Yes, it's me. I was worried you wouldn't answer if you knew it was me. I'm downstairs at the hospital. Can we have coffee?"
Brooklyn had a feeling she knew why he was calling. "Alright."
"I'll wait for you."
Brooklyn checked her schedule and saw she had a free slot. She changed out of her white coat and headed to the café across the street.
James was already there, looking tired and worn. He smiled politely as she approached. "Sorry, I'm late."
"No problem. I just got here. I ordered you a Blue Mountain coffee. I remember you liked it."
"Thank you."
An awkward silence followed. Brooklyn stirred her coffee, the spoon clinking softly against the cup.
Finally, James spoke, "I know this is a lot to ask, but please hear me out."
Brooklyn looked at him calmly. "If you know it's too much to ask, why say it?"
James hesitated before continuing, "I'm here about Piper. I hope you can help her."
Brooklyn took a sip of her coffee. "Mr. Rivera, Piper committed serious crimes. How can I help her?"
James sighed. "Dr. Mitchell, you know the truth. Please, ask Sebastian to speak to the police. Piper can't go to prison."
Brooklyn's eyes were cold. "Mr. Rivera, if you can't do it, what makes you think I can?"
James grew desperate. "I just want to see Piper. Please, ask Sebastian to help."
"Mr. Rivera, if you need my husband's help, go to his office. Why come to me?"
"I tried, but his secretary said he's unavailable. Ms. Mitchell, you know he won't see me."
"Mr. Rivera, if you can't handle it, what makes you think I can?"
"Ms. Mitchell..."
"I trust the law will handle it fairly. If there's nothing else, I need to get back to work. Thank you for the coffee. If you see Piper, give her my regards."
Brooklyn stood up and left, leaving James alone in the café. He clenched his fists in frustration and slammed them on the table.
