Chapter 189 Having Dinner Together

"Nothing. Let's keep going. We still have a lot of equipment to check," Brooklyn said, stepping ahead of Zach. He watched her back and smiled quietly.

Brooklyn was being silly. Zach actually wanted to get closer to her, so why would he push her away in front of everyone?

Lost in thought, Zach caught up with her.

By lunchtime, they had inspected over a dozen devices. Thankfully, no one asked about their relationship again, which made Brooklyn feel more at ease.

After finishing the inspection on the fifth floor, Zach checked the time. "We have twenty minutes before work starts again. We didn't nap, so we might get sleepy this afternoon. Let me buy you a coffee."

Before Brooklyn could respond, Zach added, "You have a lot of patients this afternoon. A cup of coffee to stay alert isn't me hitting on you. It's just a leader looking out for his team. I want my doctors to be sharp."

Brooklyn chuckled in disbelief. Zach was full of surprises. Suddenly, being so thoughtful and generous, how could she say no?

Zach went to get the coffee. "One cappuccino with milk and sugar and one black Americano."

He came back with two cups. "They don't have fancy coffee in the café. Dr. Mitchell, I hope you don't mind."

Taking the coffee with a smile, Brooklyn joked, "Dr. Carter, you're being quite generous."

"So work hard to repay me." Zach smiled.

Every time he smiled, it felt like a warm breeze on her face.

After a busy afternoon, Brooklyn felt her stomach pain ease after drinking milk. When she looked up, she was surprised to see it was almost time to clock out.

As the day wound down, Brooklyn got a text message. It was from Sebastian, the second one he'd sent her.

Sebastian: [I'm waiting for you in the hospital's underground parking lot.]

Had he already arrived? The distance from the MBK Group to the hospital was far.

She wanted to call back and explain, but there were people in the office, so Brooklyn texted him instead.

Brooklyn: [I haven't finished work yet, and I need to change clothes. It'll take some time. You'll have to wait a bit.]

She couldn't believe she was explaining herself so patiently, being someone who usually preferred short messages.

In his car, Sebastian smiled faintly, tapping the screen with his long fingers. [Okay.]

After work, Brooklyn changed her clothes and bumped into a solid figure as she walked out. Looking up, she saw Zach's gentle smile.

"Perfect timing. Let's go grab dinner together," Zach said.

With a sheepish smile, Brooklyn apologized and clutched her purse strap. "I'm afraid I can't today. I need to go home first."

Zach's eyebrows furrowed. "So, I'm a step late again. Dr. Mitchell already has plans."

"Sorry, rain check." She had used this excuse so many times.

Whether Zach understood or truly believed her, he never called her out, always taking the blame himself. "It's okay. I should have mentioned it earlier. In that case, let's go down together. I'm heading home, too."

As they walked to the elevator, the nearby nurses covered their mouths and giggled. Zach and Brooklyn looked like a couple since Zach came down from upstairs to pick her up after work.

In the elevator, Zach pressed the button for B2, the parking lot. Brooklyn thought he parked outside; she reached out but withdrew her hand when she saw the lit button.

"Are you also going to B2?" There was a hint of delight in Zach's tone.

Forced to nod, Brooklyn replied, "Yes, I'm driving, too."

Brooklyn hesitated. She had just lied. In fact, she could have said that Sebastian was waiting for her, but subconsciously, she couldn't bear to hurt Zach.

Zach's gaze fell on her right hand. "Let me see your right hand."

Brooklyn hid her hand behind her back as if avoiding an electric shock. "Why?"

Amused by her exaggerated reaction, Zach chuckled. "I just want to see the old injury on your hand. You don't have to explain, but the injury does exist; you can't deny that. Let me see."

Brooklyn agreed. "Okay."

The injury on her hand had been there for years, and the external wound had long healed. It would be strange if Zach could still see it.

Zach took her right hand and carefully examined the lines on it. There were no visible marks on the surface, but as his fingers touched it, he sensed something different, something subtle. He said, "It must have been painful at that time, right?"

Brooklyn nodded. "Yes." Back then, it had been very painful. She had felt like her whole hand was going to be disabled.

The elevator doors opened on B2.

Sebastian looked up from inside his Rolls-Royce and suddenly saw Zach and Brooklyn inside the elevator!

Zach was holding Brooklyn's hand. Brooklyn blushed and looked down, seemingly having a gentle conversation with him.

From a distance, Sebastian's gaze pierced through the elevator!

He thought, 'Brooklyn, what are you up to?'

Exiting the elevator, Brooklyn pulled her hand back. "Dr. Carter, please don't ask. I don't want to discuss it further."

"I..." Zach only managed to say the first word before Brooklyn abruptly stopped in her tracks. Zach looked up.

In a black suit, Sebastian stood in front of his car with one hand in his pocket, his sharp eyes fixed on a figure!

Dear CEO, Please Be Gentle!
