Chapter 410 His Aloofness and Deep Affection
'She shouldn't argue with a jerk!' Scarlett repeated this to herself several times before she could barely calm her anger.
Holding the small diamond ring between her fingers, Scarlett let out a long sigh. The ring was finally back in her possession.
Sebastian saw her staring at the ring, almost entranced, and his mood shifted from joy to displeasure. Even his previously relaxed brows furrowed again. "It seems you really like that thing."
That thing?
Scarlett curled her fingers, clutching the ring in her palm. "This is my engagement ring. It's not just a matter of liking or disliking."
With such an answer, Sebastian could automatically interpret that she didn't like it but had to keep and wear it for some reason.
Sebastian didn't look closely at the ring. After all, something that upset him should be as far away as possible. "Whether it's the design, shape, diamond, cut, or setting, it's all too tacky and doesn't match your elegance."
Great, he voiced his inner thoughts, and Sebastian felt much better, but Scarlett's expression turned sour.
"Sour grapes!" She was wearing pajamas without pockets, so she just slipped the ring onto her finger and continued to apply a warm compress to Sebastian's face.
Seeing her put on the ring, Sebastian almost rushed over to snatch that damn ring and throw it away, no, throw it down the drain! "I'll get you a ring that truly matches you."
A simple sentence, with no further explanation, but it was like a stone thrown into a lake, creating countless ripples.
"Does your face still hurt? If not, I'm going back to sleep." Scarlett tried to keep calm.
Sebastian stopped playing it cool and went for the emotional angle, which Scarlett found hard to handle. She preferred when he was aloof, at least she knew how to counter that.
Sebastian opened his eyes and sat up straight on the couch. "How could my face stop hurting so quickly? You're a doctor, don't you know that? But you should go back to sleep."
It hurt, but he should endure it. He didn't want to waste her time.
Scarlett placed the towel on his face, grabbed his large hand, and made him hold it himself. Her fingers were hot from the warm water, and as she held his hand for a moment, the heat transferred to his hand, making both of them pause. "Hold it yourself and keep applying it for a while. You can sleep in a bit tomorrow morning. If it's still swollen when you wake up, apply it again."
Sebastian nodded. "Okay."
He almost said, "Okay, honey."
But his voice stopped abruptly.
The Rivera Villa
Megan was crying her eyes out in the living room, clinging to Piper's arm and refusing to let go. "Piper, Sebastian actually said that he wants to marry Scarlett! He doesn't consider my feelings at all! My heart hurts so much!"
Piper was annoyed by Megan's crying. "Stop crying. Even if you cry yourself blind here, it won't help. You're looking for the wrong person, Megan. If you want to cry, go find Jennifer or Brian."
Megan finally lifted her head slowly from Piper's embrace, her eyes swollen, her nose sniffling, and her face red in patches. "Piper, are you kidding? Don't you know that the Kingsley family never believes in tears? Piper, have you just met Jennifer today?"
"He just unilaterally announced that he wants to marry Scarlett, but no one in the Kingsley family agrees. This is your chance. And since Scarlett has left, this is your golden opportunity?"
Megan suddenly stopped crying and looked at Piper with renewed hope. "Will she come back?"
"I don't know, but at least not now."
Megan sneered, "Brooklyn, that bitch! Even God doesn't want Brooklyn to be happy. Brooklyn deserves to die! I won't let Brooklyn be happy! Never!"
James leaned against the railing on the second floor, looking down at Megan and Piper in the living room. "Megan, it sounds like you plan to do something to her?"
Megan saw James's mocking gaze and gritted her teeth. "James! If you want Scarlett so much, why don't you take action? You should have done something at the restaurant last time!"
James ran his fingers through his hair, brushing his bangs back to his nape, causing a few wrinkles to form on his forehead. "Take action? You know Sebastian is very protective of Scarlett, yet you provoke him in front of her? Megan, being blinded by love isn't a good thing. You see, sometimes when a woman's mind isn't clear, no matter how good her other assets are, she still won't attract a man's interest."
As soon as he said this, Scarlett's image flashed in James's mind. Scarlett's wisdom, intelligence, pride, and sharpness were completely different from other women's affectations and unlike his sister's smoothness. Her uniqueness was captivating.
If women were books, Megan would be a clichéd romance novel, dull after one read.
Piper would be a difficult professional book, full of knowledge but uninteresting.
And Scarlett was a bewitching poetry collection, always fresh and intriguing.
Megan stood up, gritting her teeth, her mood worsening. "James, what do you mean! Are you mocking me?"
James let go, and the hair he had pushed back fell back to his forehead. He descended the stairs step by step. "From what you're saying, it seems like you want to do something to Scarlett, or should I say Brooklyn? What do you want to do? Revenge? A crime of passion? Or do you want to make sure she never returns to Averlake?"
His sharp words left Megan speechless. James was unfathomable, and his intentions toward Brooklyn were unclear. It wasn't the right time to reveal her plans to him.
"James, what a joke. I would never do such a thing. I'll fight for my happiness, but let me remind you, Scarlett has a fiancé in Emporcia. Do you think she can come back this time?" Megan smiled triumphantly.
But James was completely unmoved. Since he liked Scarlett, how could he not investigate her? "Mind your own business."
Piper said, "James, don't get any ideas about Scarlett. She's not someone you can mess with. If you do, Sebastian will kill you. You've just returned from abroad and don't know many things. Listen to me, stay away from her."
James furrowed his brows and smirked slightly. "I know my limits."
Scarlett, Brooklyn, Sebastian's wife, Kevin's fiancée.
This was really interesting!
"Megan, while Jennifer doesn't know the truth yet, you need to find a way to let her know about Scarlett and Kevin. Insist that Scarlett and Kevin have already been intimate in Averlake, just without a wedding. A family like the Kingsley family won't accept a woman who has been with another man."
"I will! I won't let Scarlett succeed!"
Averlake
Walking out of Emporcia International Airport, seeing the sky of Emporcia, Scarlett felt very unfamiliar and distant.
For a moment, she felt like she wasn't returning home but was just a passerby.
Pulling her suitcase, dressed in black pants and a white shirt, Scarlett took a deep breath and walked out of the airport.
From a distance, she saw a familiar figure standing at the exit, and her steps slowed down.
Kevin stood elegantly among the crowd, dressed in a clean, neat dark blue suit, with a white shirt collar peeking out. One hand was in his pocket, his posture tall and straight.
He smiled at her from afar, his thick, fluffy hair slightly tousled by the wind, his strong brows, gentle and kind eyes, and his lips curved in a loving smile.
Scarlett exhaled and smiled back at him. he had taken only a couple of steps when he appeared out of nowhere, striding towards her. He stretched out his strong arms and enveloped her tightly in his embrace. The scent of his cologne filled her senses. Scarlett rested her chin on his shoulder, a mixed emotion furrowing her brows.
"Scarlett, you're finally back. I missed you so much."
Such affectionate words, common in movies and TV shows, were also often used in real life between lovers. But to Scarlett, it felt like she was watching someone else's story, unable to participate.
She forced a smile. "Thank you for picking me up."
Kevin released her shoulders, his tall frame bending just enough to see the tip of her nose. He leaned in, preparing to kiss her, but when his lips were less than two inches away, Scarlett instinctively pulled back.
He didn't force her. Instead, he placed a kiss on her forehead.
"You must be tired from the journey. Let me take you home."
"Okay."
Kevin took the suitcase from her hand and naturally held her other hand. As he held her hand, he noticed her fingers were soft and delicate, but he didn't feel a ring on them.
Without showing any reaction, he led her out of the airport, opened the passenger door like a gentleman, and shielded her head as she got into the car. "How was your time in Libertya?"
Scarlett nodded. "It was fine. Libertya was much better than I expected."
Kevin held the steering wheel with both hands, occasionally glancing at her empty left hand as he drove.
"Tomorrow night, my parents have arranged a family dinner. They've invited your family to discuss the wedding details. But mainly, we want to hear your preferences. Whatever style you like, that's how we'll do it."
Scarlett felt tired and tried to stay alert. "Kevin, isn't the wedding a bit rushed?"
Kevin smiled at her. "Yes, I'm in a hurry. I want to marry you as soon as possible. You're so dazzling and outstanding. I'm afraid if I don't hurry, someone else will take you away."
His joking tone carried a serious message. Did he know about Sebastian?
But his reaction was so calm.
Scarlett couldn't help but look at his profile. For two years, he had always been so elegant, so noble, so composed. Although he was only thirty, he gave off an air of someone who had seen it all.
Moreover, he knew that she and Sebastian lived together, yet he didn't question, scrutinize, or blame her.
To have such composure, he must either be a wise man with an open mind or a master of hidden schemes.
In Scarlett's world, what role did he play?
