Chapter 274 How Could the Mitchell Family Have Such a Woman!

Like being electrocuted, Brooklyn put down the phone. The screen, which hadn't gone dark yet, still displayed the contact labeled: [Dr. Carter]. Sebastian, so smart, definitely knew who it was.

Brooklyn felt the panic of being caught cheating, her expression already turning anxious.

"I..." she said, hesitated.

"A call from the hospital?" Sebastian interrupted her. In a sudden moment, he realized that whether she admitted it or denied it, the answer wouldn't be good for him, so he cut her off.

Even when it came to Zach, who could make him lose his cool, Sebastian remained as calm and composed as ever.

He thought, 'How strong must my heart be to withstand Brooklyn's frequent little tricks.'

Brooklyn's fingers were icy. She curled in her palm as if holding a piece of ice as she thought, 'It seems he has really known.'

"Sebastian, I..."

"You didn't go to work today. The hospital must be urging you to go. I understand. If you want to go to work, I can take you."

Sebastian stood in the doorway of the bedroom, illuminated by the sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The light highlighted his chiseled features—the sharp nose and slightly pressed lips. He had effortlessly dispelled the earlier awkwardness.

Brooklyn finally relaxed, pressing her phone into her hand.

She thought, 'At least he hasn't overheard my conversation with Zach, which would have caused real trouble. However, he is still unaware of my resignation.'

"I'm on a break from the hospital right now, getting ready for the trip abroad, so I don't have to go in," Brooklyn said, avoiding his gaze as she took a deep breath. By the time she exhaled, Sebastian had already crossed the room and was standing beside her.

His warm, dry hand clasped hers, and he immediately noticed how cold her fingers were. Despite the summer heat outside, with temperatures hitting eighty-six degrees Fahrenheit, her hands felt like they'd been frozen in a snowstorm.

"Did you see the news today? Your hands are freezing. Are you upset about something?" She hadn't seen it yet, but she could guess what the media would say. She was so familiar with their rhetoric that it was almost second nature.

Brooklyn shook her head and smiled, "I'd rather avoid things that could ruin my mood. Besides, I'm sure with someone like you, Sebastian, you know exactly what can be said and what should be kept quiet. The media will handle it accordingly."

Sebastian's mood lifted instantly. He brushed aside any thoughts of her conversation with Zach. Although his gaze briefly fell on her phone as she put it down, he remained unsettled.

In response to her trust, a rare, soft smile touched his usually cool, aloof face. "Gaining Dr. Mitchell's approval isn't easy. Don't you think we should celebrate?" Brooklyn wasn't exactly in the mood for festivities.

"It's lunchtime. Get ready, and I'll take you out," Sebastian said, gently pressing her hand and making the decision for her without leaving room for argument.

He stepped out of the master bedroom to let her prepare, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. His tall frame pressed against the door, Sebastian couldn't help but chuckle at himself.

He used to be so stubborn with her, always clashing and never caring if his actions hurt her. Now, he was surprised by his own newfound patience.

Shaking his head with a sigh, he headed downstairs and dialed Dario's number.

"Check the list for the overseas assignments from the hospital. See if Zach's name is on it."

"Understood!"

"And also, find out the exact timing and detailed address for their trip abroad."

"Got it, Mr. Kingsley!"

Sebastian had patience, but even that had its limits.

As he was lost in thought, his phone rang.

To his surprise, Seraphina, who usually never dared to intrude, had reached out to him.

A cold smile touched Sebastian's lips. He still remembered all too well how Seraphina had treated Brooklyn when their relationship wasn't public knowledge.

Now, after their high-profile appearance last night, she was suddenly eager to make contact.

"Hello?"

His tone was icy and dismissive—Seraphina should have known better than to expect anything warm from him.

Seraphina, with Susie clinging to one arm, tried to get Sebastian's support, not caring much about her own dignity or pride.

Seraphina forced a polite smile, but her status as Brooklyn's mother was never far from her mind. "Sebastian, it's been a while since you and Brooklyn visited us. Now that your relationship is out in the open, why don't you find some time to come by for a visit?"

Susie leaned in to hear Sebastian's response, but he remained silent. The two women exchanged glances, grinding their teeth as they waited for his reply.

Just when they were about to assume he'd hung up, Sebastian's impatient voice finally came through. "Ms. Murphy, I take it you've seen the news from last night."

Seraphina was overjoyed to hear his voice. "Oh, absolutely. How could I miss such a big event? I watched the video several times and was moved to tears every time. Brooklyn is truly the pride of the Mitchell family. As her mother, I'm genuinely thrilled for her…"

Sebastian cut her off before she could get too sentimental, his voice icy with disdain. "Ms. Murphy, if you genuinely cared about her, wouldn't you first be concerned about why Brooklyn said she might not have much time left? It seems to me you have other plans."

With someone like Seraphina, Sebastian couldn't even be bothered with subtlety. His only regret was how someone like her could be part of the Mitchell family.

Fortunately, Brooklyn had enough strength of character never to call her mother.

"And find out their exact departure time and detailed address."

"Yes, Mr. Kingsley!"

He had patience, but it was limited.

While pondering, Sebastian's phone rang.

Surprisingly, Seraphina, who usually didn't dare to disturb Sebastian, had contacted him.

A cold smile appeared on Sebastian's thin lips as he thought, 'I remember well how Seraphina treated Brooklyn when our relationship wasn't public. Last night, after our high-profile appearance, she has come to make small talk.'

"Hello." His cold, disdainful tone should have made Seraphina realize how unwilling Sebastian was to deal with her.

Susie clung to Seraphina's arm. They both wanted Sebastian's support, and as for face and dignity, they were willing to discard their dignity at any time.

Seraphina smiled politely but didn't forget her role as a mother-in-law. "Sebastian, you and Brooklyn haven't visited us in a while. Now that your relationship is public, you should come over sometime."

Susie strained to hear his reaction, but Sebastian remained silent. Seraphina and Susie exchanged glances, gritting their teeth, waiting for his response.

Just when they thought Sebastian had hung up, he finally spoke impatiently, "Ms. Murphy, it seems you saw last night's news."

Seraphina was overjoyed to hear his voice. "Yes, how could I not know about such a big event? What you did for Brooklyn last night was so touching. I watched the video several times and cried each time. Brooklyn is the pride of the Mitchell family and I'm really happy for her..."

Not giving her a chance to continue her emotional speech, Sebastian's icy voice interrupted, "Ms. Murphy, if you really cared about her, shouldn't you first ask why Brooklyn said she doesn't have long to live? I think you have other plans."

For someone like Seraphina, Sebastian didn't even bother with subtlety. His only regret was that the Mitchell family had such a woman!

Fortunately, Brooklyn was strong-willed and had never called her "Mom."
