Chapter 144 Brooklyn Was Completely Indifferent
Sebastian entered the room, which smelled faintly of disinfectant and a hint of gardenia. Beyond the curtains was a starry sky. Sebastian pushed open the balcony door and sat in the chair Brooklyn had sat in. On the table was the cup Brooklyn had drunk from, and outside the window were the flowers and plants Brooklyn had looked at.
In the early summer garden, all the flowers were in bloom, but Sebastian frowned. Where were the gardenias in the garden? He remembered planting gardenias. It was the blooming season, so how could it be missing?
Sebastian's eyelids grew heavier, and eventually, he fell asleep on Brooklyn's bed without changing his clothes.
At Aucester Hospital.
Brooklyn injected herself with a pain killer, and the pain in her right hand finally eased. She then carefully massaged various acupuncture points on her arm according to traditional medicine techniques so that she could regain her freedom of movement.
It was already 1:00 AM. Brooklyn was not on duty tonight, but if she did not get some sleep soon, she would be exhausted tomorrow.
Covering her mouth, she yawned widely and saw Zach coming down from the elevator.
"Dr. Mitchell?"
Brooklyn did not have time to hide. He had already seen her. This was the situation Brooklyn feared the most, bar none.
"Dr. Carter, why haven't you clocked off yet?"
Zach was still wearing his white coat, looking like he was not about to leave.
"The patient from today's surgery is still in the ICU. I was worried about any complications, so I stayed to monitor the situation. The patient is recovering well."
Brooklyn nodded. Indeed, many patients were fortunate to have good doctors who successfully brought them out of the operating room, but many could not make it through the ICU.
Zach checked the time. "Why are you still here so late? You're not on night duty tonight, and you have to work tomorrow. You need to get some rest."
Brooklyn sheepishly nodded. "I was planning to sleep in the break room before work tomorrow."
"That's not acceptable. The conditions in the doctors' break room are too basic. Look at how pale you are. You need proper rest."
Brooklyn had not looked in the mirror, but she could imagine she looked terrible.
"It's fine. I can just sleep for a few hours."
Her stubborn response made Zach feel both angry and heartbroken. "Here's the key. Sleep upstairs. I'll drive home later."
Zach handed her the key to the top-floor break room without giving her a chance to refuse. "I know what you're worried about, but if it were me, I wouldn't care about others' opinions. Your health is your own, and staying up late is harmful. Plus, you need to be fully alert for your patients tomorrow. It's your decision."
After giving her the key, he left.
Brooklyn looked at the key and shook her head with a smile. She thought, 'Zach, oh Zach, why do you bother?'
However, the waves of sleepiness were too overwhelming, and she did not have the energy to think too much. She had patients to see tomorrow, and they were more important.
She did not sleep in his bed but curled up on the long sofa in the living room and fell asleep.
She planned to sneak out before everyone arrived for work the next morning, and it should be fine.
Early the next morning, Brooklyn woke up early and hurriedly washed her face. It was only 5:00 AM.
'Should I go back to sleep or stay up?' Brooklyn thought in her heart.
Brooklyn was a bit conflicted.
As she pulled on her, Brooklyn frowned. She had sweated a lot during the surgery yesterday and had not noticed it last night because she was too tired. As she smelled herself, Brooklyn almost collapsed from how bad she smelled.
She decided to go home and change while she had the time.
She hailed a cab at the door. When the driver asked where to go, she intended to tell him her apartment's address but ended up saying, "Bayside Villas."
Brooklyn then leaned back in the seat and fell asleep.
When she woke up, the car had stopped. She was stunned by her nap.
Inside the villa, Sebastian scowled as he got up from Brooklyn's bed. It was not yet 6:00 AM.
The sun had already risen as Sebastian rubbed his temples and walked out of the room.
Brooklyn had not returned all night.
Brooklyn returned home, opened the villa door, and walked into the hallway. Looking up, she met Sebastian face to face.
He was holding a cup of coffee in the living room, and she stood by the shoe rack, almost forgetting to take off her shoes. They just stared at each other across the space, and it felt like something was burning in the air.
After a moment, she bent down to take off her shoes. When she placed them, she saw his black Versace shoes on the top shelf, right next to a pair of red Chanel high heels.
Megan's?
For some reason, she naturally pushed the high heels aside with her shoes, creating a space to place her shoes next to Sebastian's.
"You must have had fun all night going crazy, didn't you, Brooklyn?"
Sebastian's voice was filled with anger, venting his frustration at her for not answering his calls or texts.
Sebastian's long fingers held the coffee cup as his face was cold and distant, tinged with a hint of disgust at her staying out all night.
In an instant, Brooklyn felt her shoes squeezed between the two pairs looked somewhat pathetic.
All her hopes and expectations were met with indifferent mockery.
"You and Ms. Turner haven't seen each other for days and must be thrilled to reunite, Mr. Kingsley. Staying out all night gave you two the perfect opportunity to be alone. You had a wonderful night together, so what are you dissatisfied with?"
Brooklyn's heart was in pain and anger but the thought of him and Megan's tender embrace the night before and his icy attitude towards her this morning meant she did not want to show her jealousy.
Jealousy would mean she cared while indifference would show she did not care at all.
