Chapter 53 Sorrowful
Kelly's eyes widened in alarm. She clutched Brooklyn's arm, shaking her head and gesturing with her mouth, warning her not to comply.
Brooklyn gently removed her hand, lowering her voice to reassure her, "Don't worry, it's fine."
Kelly protested weakly, "Brooklyn..."
The headlights of a black Rolls-Royce illuminated a row of cars. Brooklyn bid Kelly farewell and strode over, sliding into the passenger seat.
The confined space was thick with Sebastian's oppressive aura. Brooklyn struggled to maintain her composure, stating, "You sought me out because of her, didn't you?"
Without a second thought, Brooklyn knew he was referring to Megan, the object of his affection.
Sebastian glanced at her and retorted, "Who taught you not to fasten your seat belt?"
Brooklyn paused momentarily, then pulled the seat belt across her body, scrutinizing Sebastian's expression. His face was a mask of cold indifference.
She fastened her seat belt.
Sebastian started the car. The black vehicle swiftly exited the parking lot and merged onto the road. Throughout the journey, Sebastian remained silent.
Brooklyn studied his stern profile, asking hesitantly, "Where are you taking me?"
Sebastian responded with icy silence.
Brooklyn gritted her teeth and demanded, "Sebastian, what exactly are you planning?"
Sebastian kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel, and retorted, "You've sabotaged my good fortune. You tell me what I should do."
If that was the case, she had indeed committed a grave error.
Brooklyn stared straight ahead. The bustling city, bathed in a sea of lights, was alive with activity.
"It appears I have indeed made an unforgivable mistake. Megan came to the hospital today to confront me, and we did have a heated exchange. I don't know how she relayed it to you, but I never intended to harm her."
Her tone was steady, consistent with Brooklyn's usual demeanor, laced with a hint of disdain that was maddeningly calm.
A fleeting spark of anger flashed across Sebastian's face. He was intrigued by how Megan could remain so composed.
"Did she go to the hospital? What for?" Sebastian inquired with a frosty detachment, his attention seemingly divided between the conversation and the road he was navigating.
Brooklyn, taken aback, responded, "You weren't aware she'd been to the hospital? She was there for a prenatal check-up and you..."
"Why should I be aware?" His tone remained as icy and detached as before, as though Megan's actions bore no relevance to him. Shouldn't Sebastian, the father of the unborn child, be more concerned?
"Megan is carrying your child, Sebastian. Shouldn't you show some concern? She's bearing the potential heir to the Kingsley lineage. Don't you think you're showing an alarming indifference towards your own progeny, Mr. Kingsley?" Brooklyn retorted, her tone matching his indifference, her words echoing her deepest concerns. She hoped he would clarify his position then and there.
However, Sebastian's grip on the steering wheel tightened subtly. A frown creased his forehead as he cursed inwardly, "Damn woman! Must she make my disdain so painfully apparent?"
"Of course I care about my child! I don't need you to remind me!" His icy tone shattered the fragile calm that had been hanging in the air. Brooklyn was startled, her hand instinctively clutching the seatbelt.
"If you truly care for Megan, why waste your time with me? Wait until Megan gives birth to the Kingsley heir, then you can marry..."
"Brooklyn!"
Sebastian's stern reprimand echoed in the car, causing Brooklyn to instinctively seal her lips. His anger was palpable.
"I don't need you to judge my life."
His tone, already frosty, turned glacial after his curt reprimand. Yes, she had no right to judge his life. Then why was she even in the car with him?
The car moved leisurely along the brightly lit road, the atmosphere inside growing increasingly oppressive. Several times, Brooklyn stole glances at Sebastian, only to find his handsome face devoid of any emotion.
Neither of them spoke, the silence between them growing heavier. Brooklyn yearned to escape the stifling atmosphere as soon as possible.
To Brooklyn's surprise, Sebastian halted the car outside a bustling shopping mall. She glanced up at the brightly lit Aucester Plaza, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"Why have you brought me here?" she queried.
Sebastian shot her a disgusted look before replying curtly, "Shopping."
His tone was serious, but Brooklyn was taken aback. Shopping? Sebastian wanted to go shopping at the mall?
Before she could recover from her shock, Sebastian extended a bank card towards her. "You're right, I should show more concern for my child and my woman."
Brooklyn's eyes widened in surprise. "You..."
"So, tonight, I'm going to visit Megan and I want to bring her a gift. I believe you have a knack for selecting gifts," he stated.
He had brought her to the mall to choose a gift for Megan?
Brooklyn's expression fluctuated wildly before finally settling into a calm facade, her cheeks regaining their rosy hue. She was heartbroken, but there was no need to show it.
"Mr. Kingsley, what kind of gift do you wish to purchase?" Brooklyn's grip on the bank card tightened, her knuckles turning white from the strain.
His words had wounded her deeply.
Sebastian didn't even bother to look at Brooklyn as he replied coldly, "A gift for the mother of my child, what do you think?"
