Chapter 247 Love Has No Reason

Zach closed his eyes and reached out to find the end of the towel. His fingers brushed against Brooklyn's chest. Whether it was the heat from her body or the heat from his own fingertips, a shock of warmth surged through him, making him shiver uncontrollably. He fumbled with the damp towel, tossing it aside, and carefully draped a thin blanket over her instead.

The task left Zach drenched in sweat, and as he bent over, droplets fell from his face to the floor.

He discarded the towel and adjusted the blanket, making sure it was loose enough to allow airflow. Next, he retrieved some ice from the fridge, crushed it, and wrapped it in a towel to place on her forehead.

Then, he rummaged through the drawers until he found her hairdryer. Sitting by the bed, he gently dried her hair. Wet hair could be harmful, and Brooklyn, exhausted as she was, might not even realize the danger.

Kelly, who had a spare key to Brooklyn's place, unlocked the door and was startled by the sound of the hairdryer. Peeking into the bedroom, she was struck dumb by the sight before her.

Brooklyn lay in bed while Zach sat beside her, carefully drying her hair strand by strand. His movements were slow and delicate, as though he feared tugging on her hair might cause her pain.

Zach's eyes were soft, warm like a gentle spring breeze as he gazed at Brooklyn's face. Though he remained silent, his tenderness spoke volumes, communicated through the steady hum of the hairdryer.

Kelly stood there, mesmerized by the scene, feeling her heart tilt heavily at that moment.

She thought, 'How many men would care for a woman with such warmth? And how many women would be fortunate enough to find someone so dedicated to healing them, even when they are at their most vulnerable?'

Kelly stood frozen, unaware of the tears streaming down her face.

She sniffled, breaking the spell with her noise.

Zach, just finishing up with the hairdryer, looked up and saw Kelly standing in the doorway.

Their eyes met across the room. Kelly wiped her tears and stepped inside, forcing a cheerful smile. "Dr. Carter, you've been working hard."

Zach unplugged the hairdryer and smiled back, his demeanor calm and composed. "It's nothing. For Brooklyn, it's the least I can do."

Kelly nodded, deeply moved. "Dr. Carter, so much has happened to her recently. I don't even know what to say."

Zach put the hairdryer back in its place, the second drawer down on the right side of the vanity.

"You don't need to say anything. I understand everything and accept it all," he said, his clothes soaked with sweat but still impeccably neat and dignified.

Kelly's gaze shifted to the table, noticing the alcohol, towel, and blanket. Her eyes widened in shock. "You didn't… see her all over, did you?"

"You're mistaken. I was just helping with some physical methods to reduce her fever. As for anything else, I keep my eyes to myself. I understand," Zach said with a genuine, albeit weary smile, his cheeks flushing like a bashful young man caught off guard by an awkward question.

Kelly couldn't help but laugh at his sincerity. "Dr. Carter, if Brooklyn doesn't choose you, she'll be the one missing out."

Zach shrugged, a modest smile on his lips. "Whether she chooses me or not, I'm not letting her lose anything."

Kelly, having never heard such heartfelt words, was momentarily at a loss. "Wait a second, Brooklyn's still unconscious. How did you get in? She didn't exactly open the door for you, did she?"

Zach's face grew slightly pale as he recalled, "No, I climbed in from the next apartment."

He spoke so matter-of-factly that Kelly was momentarily stunned. But it didn't take long for her to realize the gravity of his statement.

"Are you kidding me? You climbed in from the sixteenth floor? Do you have a death wish?"

Zach merely chuckled, a glimmer of happiness dancing in his eyes. "If something were to happen to her, I'd consider myself the real culprit."

The sixteenth floor was certainly a fatal drop.

Kelly leaned in to touch Brooklyn's forehead, still warm to the touch. "Dr. Carter, can I ask you something?"

Zach washed his hands and wiped them off. "Go ahead."

Kelly bit her lip, puzzled. "I'm curious why you're so deeply devoted to Brooklyn. You've known her for such a short time—certainly not long enough to be willing to go to such lengths for her. So why are you so determined to care for her?"

Zach picked up the towel, shook it out, and hung it up to dry. "Loving someone isn't about time or the person being loved. It's something I can't control myself. I wish I understood why I love her so much."

He gave a rueful smile. "But if love could be explained, it probably wouldn't be love, would it?"
