Chapter 57 Sebastian Threatens to Destroy the Mitchell Family
Zach's voice echoed through the sterile hospital halls, his words directed at Brooklyn. "I've heard the nurses at Aucester Hospital speak highly of a Dr. Mitchell. They say she's exceptionally skilled, works independently, communicates directly, and possesses a unique personality. I believe they must be referring to you, correct?"
Brooklyn, despite her evident disinterest in engaging, found herself the recipient of Zach's relentless friendliness. His patience and good-natured demeanor were a rarity in their profession.
They exited the hospital together, Brooklyn's steps brisk and purposeful. Without turning her head, she dismissed him, "Since you're familiar with my personality, I'd appreciate it if you didn't waste your time on me."
Zach's response was not one of anger, but rather a smile. He quickened his pace to match hers, his voice apologetic. "Dr. Mitchell, I must apologize for requesting your assistance. I realize it's encroached on your off-duty time."
Brooklyn halted abruptly, her delicate features betraying her exhaustion. Despite her reputed composure, she couldn't conceal her fatigue. "Dr. Carter, are you about to tell me you've wasted my time and offer a meal as compensation?" Her gaze met his, a clear understanding of his intentions reflected in her eyes.
Zach, however, merely smiled, a genuine, guileless expression. "Dr. Mitchell, would you care to join me for a meal? Unfortunately, I have prior engagements this evening. Perhaps another time?"
His unexpected response brought her a sense of relief. "No need, Dr. Carter. Goodbye."
"Until tomorrow, Dr. Mitchell," Zach replied, watching as an exhausted and famished Brooklyn departed the hospital. She purchased a sandwich from a nearby store, her mind too preoccupied and her body too weary to care for her usual disdain for fast food.
Upon her return to the villa, Brooklyn sensed something amiss. She pondered, "Has Sebastian, who hasn't been here for a few days, suddenly returned?" A sneer crossed her lips. "If he's not here for Megan, then why? Is he here to torment me with another one of his games?"
As Brooklyn pushed open the door, the harsh lights momentarily blinded her. She squinted, her eyes adjusting just in time to hear Sebastian's icy voice, laced with unmistakable irritation. "Do you truly despise seeing me that much?"
She set down her keys and purse, lifting her gaze to find Sebastian clad in a suit. It was the same attire he'd worn in the photograph, yet he looked even more striking in person. The hand-tailored suit, impeccably pressed, suited him perfectly.
Brooklyn stared at him, her mind momentarily adrift. She quickly shook herself from her reverie. "What are you thinking?" She asked herself silently. "I had to work overtime and wasn't aware you were back," she responded nonchalantly. She was too weary, yearning for sleep, lacking the energy for a confrontation.
Sebastian uncrossed his legs, his gaze scrutinizing her. "Quinn is coming tomorrow. I trust you know what needs to be done."
Quinn? The name sent a jolt through her.
The mere mention of the name Quinn sent a ripple of unease through Brooklyn. What could he possibly want?
"I'm on duty tomorrow and won't return until nightfall. When is he coming?" she asked, her voice betraying her fatigue. Her ankles throbbed with a dull ache, a testament to the six hours she had spent on her feet. Her calves were swollen and sore, the aftermath of a grueling surgery. It had been a while since she had been in the operating room for such an extended period, and the sudden exertion had left her drained.
"Tomorrow is Saturday, he'll arrive in the morning. You'll have to manage your own schedule," came the dismissive reply. His nonchalant words effectively overhauled her carefully planned timetable, leaving no room for her to object.
Brooklyn let out a soft snort of derision. "Sebastian, I hope you haven't forgotten who I am. I'm a doctor, with my own set of responsibilities. I can't just abandon my patients to entertain guests. Mr. Quinn is currently unemployed, isn't he? Perhaps he should be the one to adjust his schedule."
"Brooklyn!" Sebastian's voice sliced through the air, his icy gaze fixed on her. "Who you are? Do you need me to remind you of who you are? Dr. Mitchell, don't forget, your primary role is as Mrs. Kingsley, my wife. Your loyalty should be to the Kingsley family."
What stung Brooklyn wasn't his words - she had heard them countless times before. It was the cold, detached tone he used that shattered her.
Forcing herself to remain composed, Brooklyn retorted, "Mr. Kingsley, I apologize, I almost forgot that I am Mrs. Kingsley. I was under the impression that the woman you frequently spend time with was your wife. Thank you for the reminder."
Sebastian's eyes narrowed, recognizing her anger. He tapped the armrest of the couch thoughtfully. "Furthermore, Megan will be having her prenatal check-ups at Aucester Hospital from now on. You will be in charge. And remember, don't try to deceive me."
Brooklyn almost laughed at his audacity. She met his gaze fearlessly, a cold smile playing on her lips. "Mr. Kingsley, my specialty is cardiology. If Ms. Turner has a heart issue, I will gladly take responsibility. However, for her pregnancy, I'm afraid you'll need to find another doctor."
Sebastian remained silent, his expression unreadable. Brooklyn leaned against the staircase railing, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Fortunately, you reminded me earlier. I am Mrs. Kingsley. On what grounds does Megan expect me to personally oversee her care?"
The audacity of it all!
Jennifer had issued her commands over the phone, while Sebastian had issued threats. Did they truly believe they could bully her, Mrs. Kingsley, a woman neither favored nor acknowledged?
Sebastian studied her coldly, a sneer curling his lips. "You've grown bolder. It seems I've been too lenient with you, allowing you to overstep your boundaries."
Brooklyn tightened her grip on the railing, her gaze steady on him, waiting for his next move.
Sebastian rose slowly, adjusting his suit before striding towards her. "Are you truly fearless? Willing to risk everything?"
Brooklyn's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of fear crossing her face as she looked up at Sebastian's stern, handsome visage. "What are you implying?"
Sebastian slid a hand into his trouser pocket, his posture commanding. "Your actions will determine the fate of the Mitchell family. If you don't care, I won't hesitate to destroy it."
