Chapter 318 Heading to Jabari
"Brooklyn! You nearly gave me a heart attack! I heard you got thrown in jail. I was freaking out. What happened to your face? And you've lost so much weight!"
Before Kelly could finish, Brooklyn grabbed her shoulders and shoved a gift box into her hands. "When Sebastian gets out of the hospital, make sure you give this to him yourself."
Kelly blinked, staring at the box. "What's in it? And why do I have to give it to him? What am I supposed to say?"
Kelly was already scared stiff of Sebastian. The thought of facing him, let alone handing him something, made her heart race. His presence was just too intense.
"Just tell him it's from me. He'll get it when he sees it," Brooklyn said.
Kelly squinted at Brooklyn, sensing something was off. "Brooklyn, what's going on? You're acting weird."
"I'm fine. I'm joining a medical rescue team and leaving Libertya for a bit. Take care of yourself. If you find a guy you like, don't just mess around. Marry him, but make sure he's good to you," Brooklyn said.
"Stop worrying about me all the time. When will you be back? Keep in touch when you get to Jabari and post tons of pics on Instagram."
"Sure thing!" Brooklyn replied, though she doubted there'd be any internet to post anything from a place like that.
Kelly was her only friend in Aucester. Brooklyn didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so she stopped contacting anyone else.
"Ms. Mitchell, please." The tall bodyguard in black opened the car door. Brooklyn glanced back at the hospital, her breath catching, her face pale. It took everything she had to hold it together.
As the car pulled away, Brooklyn sat in the back seat, tears streaming down her face.
Two days later, in Malawa.
The sun was brutal, baking the earth. As soon as Brooklyn got off the plane, she felt the intense heat, something she'd never experienced before.
She didn't dare look up at the sky. Any exposed skin could get burned by the UV rays, causing a stinging pain that drove her nuts.
"This place borders Somaliah. Gunfights could break out any second. I could get shot at any moment. Fantastic," Brooklyn said, almost laughing.
Zach draped a large shawl over her. "The culture might be lacking, but the scenery's pretty nice," he smiled.
Brooklyn smiled back, thinking, 'Does the hospital not realize we could die here at any moment?'
After the plane, it took another four or five hours by bus to reach their final destination. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and open pasture on the other, it looked like a movie set.
Getting off the bus, the desolate landscape and scorching heat hit Brooklyn hard, leaving her a bit dazed.
Zach put down the luggage. "Up ahead is where the medical team stays. I've got a single room set up for you."
Following Zach, they saw a few local women in brightly colored clothes, more like large pieces of fabric wrapped around them. At a glance, it was hard to tell them apart.
Brooklyn pulled a white scarf from her bag and covered her head and most of her face.
"Better if people don't know who I am for now," she muttered, adjusting the scarf to hide her expression.
Zach leaned on the suitcase, eyeing her, then nodded. "Looks good, gives you an exotic vibe."
