Chapter 451 Becoming Friends In a Defferent Way

Aucester Hospital.

"Scarlett! There's a patient in the emergency room. Can you check? Dr. Carter and Dr. Moore are both in surgery, and this patient's condition is urgent. There's no doctor available right now."

Brooklyn was about to change clothes and go home when an emergency room doctor ran to her office door, panting and explaining the sudden situation.

"Okay!"

Arabella and Jake saw Brooklyn running towards the emergency room and quickly followed her.

Brooklyn grabbed her stethoscope and quickly walked to the elevator. Her white coat was unbuttoned but not yet taken off, and as she ran, the coat flapped like white wings. From behind, she looked like a white dove spreading its wings, flying down the corridor.

Arabella stared in a daze, her mouth agape as she watched the white figure ahead. "Jake, did you see that? It really looked like an angel just flew by."

Jake glanced coldly, "No, I just saw an idiot."

"Fuck! I hope you never find a woman who likes you!"

Brooklyn inquired about the patient's basic condition on the way. After listening, she had a general understanding. "Got it."

The people in the emergency room felt relieved when they saw Brooklyn personally coming to the rescue. They stepped back to make way for her, their eyes full of hope.

The patient was very young, likely in his early twenties. Though pale from the stabbing pain in his chest and in a state of deep shock, one could still see the sharp, handsome features etched across his face.

Brooklyn bent down to listen to the patient's heartbeat. She heard the faint sound of his heart. "The patient has severe arrhythmia. Where are the patient's family members?"

A middle-aged woman walked over from the side. Her face looked more haggard than the man's, trembling with fear. She cautiously stepped forward, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "I am here, how is my son?"

Brooklyn put down the stethoscope and looked at the patient's family member, gently comforting her. "Was your son overly emotional or did something happen to upset him before he fainted?"

The woman nodded, and tears quickly flowed from her eyes as she lowered her head, covering her mouth and sobbing. "It's all my fault."

Brooklyn comforted, "Now is not the time for self-blame. Please briefly describe what happened. It's crucial for the patient's treatment."

The woman calmed herself and described the situation.

Brooklyn nodded. "Okay, I understand. Nurse, take the family member to rest. Arabella, Jake, come with me."

"Okay!"

Brooklyn looked at her two assistants and firmly instructed, "Listen, this patient has extensive heart necrosis. We need to perform necrotic nerve removal and repair surgery."

Arabella's eyes widened. "This..."

The surgery was too difficult.

Jake looked at the unconscious patient. "Dr. Mitchell, I suggest we first conduct a comprehensive examination of the patient, at least an angiography and ultrasound."

Brooklyn didn't have time to argue. "I've seen cases like this before. His symptoms match those of patients I've encountered. The problem now is that the surgery is very difficult, and neither of you has experience with similar surgeries."

Arabella bit her lip, clenched her fist, and looked at the man on the stretcher receiving oxygen. "But if we don't operate, the patient might die."

Jake leaned against the wall, looking down at the patient. "I have experience with similar surgeries."

Brooklyn suddenly looked up at Jake, surprised and a bit excited. "You've done the same surgery?"

Jake nodded. "But... the surgery failed."

"Fuck! Then why did you mention it?" Arabella complained angrily.

Brooklyn closed her eyes briefly. "How is Dr. Carter's surgery going?"

Jake checked the time. "Four hours and forty-five minutes. It seems to be almost over."

Brooklyn nodded. "Arrange for two people to conduct a comprehensive examination of the patient. Bring me the results as soon as they're out. I'll go discuss the plan with Dr. Carter. You two can go back."

But Arabella grabbed Brooklyn's arm. "I'm not going back. I'll go with you to find Dr. Carter."

Jake didn't plan to leave either. After all, rare patients are the best learning opportunities for doctors, greatly improving their skills. How could he miss it?

"Okay."

The three of them arrived outside Operating Room No. 1. The patient had just been wheeled out, and they saw Zach talking with a few doctors.

Seeing Brooklyn standing outside, Zach ended the conversation and quickly walked over. "What happened?"

Arabella's heart skipped a beat when she saw Zach. "Dr. Carter, you just finished surgery. Thank you for your hard work!"

Zach smiled warmly at her and then focused on Brooklyn.

"There's a patient with a very special condition..." Brooklyn explained the patient's details, waiting for Zach's response.

After a moment of consideration, Zach tapped his chin with his finger. "It's indeed tricky. We need to arrange surgery as soon as possible."

"Yes, but right now, the only person who can perform this surgery is you." Brooklyn looked at Zach and slowly spoke.

After she finished, Arabella and Jake were stunned, and even Zach looked at Brooklyn in surprise. The three of them almost spoke in unison, "What about you?"

Brooklyn shook her head dejectedly. "Dr. Carter probably knows that this kind of surgery can last for more than ten hours, but..."

Before Brooklyn could finish, Zach interrupted her. "I understand. Once the surgery time is confirmed, I'll be the lead surgeon. Dr. Mitchell, can you be my first assistant?"

"Of course, thank you." Brooklyn felt relieved.

Arabella and Jake walked out of the hospital, both puzzled.

"Is there really a surgery that Dr. Mitchell can't do? No way! Isn't my idol supposed to be all-powerful?" Arabella asked.

Jake scoffed disdainfully, hands in his jeans pockets, looking like he knew the situation well. "It's not that she can't do it, but that she shouldn't."

Arabella pouted. "Is there a difference?"

"Of course there is, but you'll have to figure it out yourself."

"Hey! Jake! Explain it clearly! Arrogant Jake! Don't let me catch you with a secret!" Arabella shouted.

Upstairs, in the office, Zach's eyes lingered on Brooklyn for a moment before stopping at her hand. "Is it because of your hand?"

Brooklyn rubbed her right hand and nodded. "After the accident, I had multiple fractures, and my hand was severely injured. But fortunately, the severe injury reactivated the previously necrotic nerves. However, I can't perform high-intensity work for too long. Ten hours is my limit."

Zach nodded, thinking of the cliff and the rain, feeling a sharp pain in his heart. "So you always try to keep your surgeries under ten hours, becoming the doctor with the shortest time for similar surgeries."

Brooklyn smiled self-deprecatingly. "You figured it out."

"From now on, I'll handle all long surgeries. Don't push your limits. Take good care of your hands. You know how important a surgeon's hands are. So, Brooklyn, take care of them." Zach's tone was firm.

"I will, thank you, Dr. Carter." Brooklyn smiled awkwardly, her face stiff from the forced smile.

The atmosphere was slightly awkward, and she felt even more so. After all these years, they were still in this awkward situation.

But Zach smiled warmly. "You seem to be avoiding me. Now that Sebastian treats you so well, I'm relieved. So I'll only bless you as a good friend and won't interfere."

Brooklyn's lips turned pale from being bitten. "Thank you, Dr. Carter."

"Call me Zach. We agreed to be good friends." His smile was so comfortable and reassuring, like a spring breeze, bringing inexplicable peace.

"Good friends, lifelong friends. I'm happy to know you, Zach." She exhaled softly, finally smiling more naturally.

It was great that he could let go, though she didn't know if he truly felt that way.

Outside the window, the night view of Aucester was shrouded in darkness, with stars and lights intertwined, creating a dreamlike beauty.

Zach shifted his gaze from the window to the room, self-deprecatingly saying, "Do you know why I decided to give up?"

Brooklyn frowned and honestly replied, "I don't know. But If you want, you can tell me."

Zach took a deep breath, as if a force was being drawn out of him, feeling desolate. "I used to think that if I could meet you before Sebastian, become the first person to meet, you would choose me."

"But later, when fate really gave me that chance, I still couldn't make you fall for me. Whether it's Scarlett or Brooklyn, you won't fall for me." He spoke with a bitter smile, a smile that pained those who saw it.

"I... I'm sorry, Zach. I'm really sorry."

"No, it's not your fault. Loving someone isn't wrong, and not loving isn't wrong either. But through this, I realized something, so I won't persist anymore. I don't want my feelings for you to affect your happiness. I'm letting go." He said, with a mix of helplessness, pain, and a bit of nonchalance, but mostly sorrow.

Brooklyn's eyes welled up, tears streaming down. "Zach, you'll definitely have a wonderful wife, you will."

Zach's throat was dry, his nose stinging, almost bringing him to tears. "I hope so. Brooklyn, can I hug you? Just a hug."

Brooklyn opened her arms and hugged Zach, bidding farewell to the Zach who had loved her so passionately, while welcoming the Zach who was now stepping back into her life as a dear friend.

"Good friends are for life, perhaps even longer than love." She released his shoulders, hiding her tears with a smile.

"Really? But why do I feel that love lasts longer?" A deep voice suddenly came from the door, followed by a tall, dark figure with a chiseled face illuminated by the light.

"Sebastian? What are you doing here?" Brooklyn quickly stepped back from Zach, instinctively afraid of Sebastian misunderstanding.

Zach smiled slightly. "Mr. Kingsley, it seems you saw everything."

Sebastian wrapped his arm around Brooklyn's shoulder. "I saw and heard everything. Mr. Carter's honesty and grace, I admire. But as my wife's good friend, it's best not to ask for hugs in the future."

Brooklyn punched his chest. "Alright, you know that's not what it meant."

Sebastian extended his right hand, a long, slender hand between him and Zach, his deep blue eyes looking into Zach's gentle ones. "Since you're Brooklyn's friend, you're also my friend."

Zach smiled helplessly. This was all so sudden.

Their hands clasped, palm to palm, as if something connected them.

This handshake seemed to travel through time, back to that night outside the hospital when Zach's outstretched hand was ignored by Sebastian. After many hardships, they finally shook hands and made peace.

"Alright, for Brooklyn's sake, I'll be your friend." Zach said firmly.

Dear CEO, Please Be Gentle!
